Babies on the Brain

Any strict diets while TTC?

Are any of you strict with your diets while TTC? I was very strict the first time and felt super guilty for sipping some wine during that time we conceived. Then throughout the pregnancy I ate all the super foods that are good for baby plus taking my prenatal vitamins and substituting water and hot chocolate for my daily caffeine. We had a beautiful & healthy baby boy.
This time around, I feel more casual about it and think hey, why say goodbye to wine and moldy cheese when I might not be pregnant?? and I still have 8.5 months of quitting all the things I love for another God willing- healthy baby. I'm still being strict and not drinking any alchohol or even coffee right now!! I do drink some decaf every other day but only a few sips ( I feel guilty about that too :(). I'm either way too strict for you or too risky. Any thoughts?

  • My husband and I will start TTC next month. I'm in no rush to conceive, so I'm definitely taking advantage of the indulgences you mentioned (wine on the weekends, 2 cups of coffee a day, etc). I have been trying to transition to buying more organic foods and avoiding anything overly processed, otherwise I'm not being too strict until I get that BFP. I can imagine feeling different though if I had been trying for a while with no results. I say enjoy while you can! :)

  • I'm a fiend for making sure I get my recommended servings of fruits, veggies, etc. I'm also approaching 35 which increases so risks, so I adapted a diet that is regarded for diabetics. Otherwise I'll "drink til it's pink" and continue to choke down coffee.

However, you might want to direct TTC questions to the board "Trying to Get Pregant." Many posters on this board are waiting til a certain time to TTC.
  • When we start, I am going to drink til it's pink. Once I'm pregnant, I'll limit myself to one cup of coffee a day vs. the current 2-3. This isn't something to be proud of, but I don't think I've had a day without coffee since I was 13 or so. I don't think I could just quit. I definitely wouldn't feel guilty about decaf!

Maybe I'll feel different once I'm actually pregnant, and I think everyone should do what makes them comfortable, but it seems like a lot of the "food rules" are based in fear and paranoia on doctors' parts instead of logic or research. For example, I don't personally eat deli meat anyway, but if the logic is avoiding listeria shouldn't we also be avoiding milk? I saw lurking that some women are still doing sushi (non-Mercury laden fish species, reputable restaurants) and part of me hopes my future doc or midwife will be on board with that when the time comes!
  • Dear @purrbucket, yes, I noticed your very good at showing direction on this board. I have a few direction skills too and I would direct you to the other TTC board (Trying to control) I'm sure there's a special website out there for that... not trying to be mean or anything.

Let's be honest now, you were offended and upset by my remark. Why else would you tell me to buzz off?

Looking back I see how it came it across and I apologize that my comment wasn't written clearly. That's my fault. And, I can see how you thought of it as controlling: I mentioned it because you're more likely to get responses from people in the same boat as you on the other board.

p.s. The Trying to Control board is surprisingly too lax for me. :(
p.p.s Hahah, sorry, couldn't resist poking fun at that. That was immature, sorry!
  • Just because you did all those things before and during your first pregnancy, does not mean that those were the reason you had a healthy baby. Correlation =/.= causation.

I was not trying to pregnant. I was drinking the night before I got my positive test. I drank coffee throughout my pregnancy, ate deli meat, and had some wine during my 3rd trimester. I have a perfectly healthy 3-year-old boy.

  • I'm not.  I tend to eat fairly healthy and have stopped drinking coffee regularly.  But if I want wine or coffee I drink it.  The other day I was planning on having a salad for lunch but the Indian food smelled good so I went for it.  We're not trying for another 3 months so I don't think it's a big deal.  I am taking prenatals and continuing to try to exercise several times per week, but I've always done that.

I have to admit I am a little confused by your post - do you mean you're not trying for 8.5 more months, or you're trying now and then if you get a positive you have 8.5 months to eat healthy?  If you're not trying for 8.5 more months, I don't think there is any reason to cut back on alcohol or coffee if you're not drinking substantial amounts, unless you're focused on getting healthy for other reasons (not that a glass of wine or a cup of coffee is necessarily considered unhealthy...).

You are being utterly insane. There is NO reason to quit drinking coffee or wine 8.5 months before you even begin to TTC.  Why in the world would you feel guilty about DECAF? Seriously educate yourself on how food and drinks work in the human body and go drink a darn glass of wine.

So much this! OP You are ridiculous and obviously uneducated. Do yourself and future offspring a favor and pick up a book.
  • OP, you're insane.

You can have 200-300mg of caffeine a day during pregnancy. You ca eat cheese, as long as it's pasteurized. You can eat fish (although limit any that contain high levels of mercury), and yes, you can have deli meat (and it doesn't even have to me heated!).

Please educate yourself on the real do's and don'ts of pregnancy before you conceive.

  • I haven't had a cup of coffee in 15 years (sensitive stomache) and I had a heat stroke almost 10 years ago so I avoid caffeine in general (it dehydrates you as does alcohol). When TTC our first, I drank alcohol here and there and didn't eat super healthy. We TTC for 3 years for DS2 so I went on the Paleo diet and did boot camp workouts to make myself super healthy and fertile. It worked! (I saw a hormone specialist because my periods were so wonky, I couldn't plan. He said carbs, sugar, soy and dairy are Estrogen causing and my estrogen was too high. When I cut all that from my diet, my flows were like clockwork) As soon as I got a + I ate whatever I wanted (except restricted from preggo) and surprisingly didn't gain too much weight. I have 2 healthy boys.
