Airport scanners

A friend at a party last week told me her OB said she should go through the new full-body scanners at the airport since she's pregnant. I'm only about 7 weeks and I've still got a week before I see my doctor but this sounded crazy to me! Has anyone else heard this? I traveled the day I found out I was pregnant (how's that for starting a vacation?!) so I've been through a couple already. Anyone else been told this?

Re: Airport scanners

  • I have gone through both types of scanners while pregnant with my last kiddo. I think they are all safe but you could always just request a pat down.

  • I wouldn't worry about the metal detector but I don't think I would be comfortable with the new scanners
  • NEVER go through a backscatter machine! It's a low level x-Ray.

Millimeter wave and metal detectors are fine. If you use the search function you will find we already discussed this. A sizable portion still preferred to be over cautious with the MV scanners and request pat downs.

But you're already exposing yourself to radiation by flying with less atmosphere to shield you, so...
  • @lizzie5831 Question I meant to ask on the over thread but forgot: how do you know if it's a millimeter wave or backscatter? Do they look different? I've only ever seen metal detectors or the one where you stand in almost a circle and the thing moves around you, is that millimeter? Thanks!

  • My doctor said it was fine to go through the scanner until the last months of pregnancy.
  • Majority of the "new" scanners are not actually X-ray and therefore not a problem. Metal detectors equally not an issue. As someone who has to go through them every day for work trust me I've done the research. The amount that you are subjected to if you're just going on holiday or a infrequent traveller is not an issue. If you feel uncomfortable though just ask for a pat down. In the UK they kick up a huge fuss though, in the U.S. it's not a problem.
  • And by the way... The actual flight itself will give you over 100 times the radiation that one of the back scatter "bad" scanners will give you.... Just saying.
