December 2015 Moms

I like BIG BABIES and I cannot lie!

My doctor informed me that typically birth weight mimics the mother's birth weight. Since my mom was 8 lbs 14 oz and I was 9 lbs, I may believe it. We have a lot of big babies in our family! She's already informing me we'll need to closely monitor the size of my baby in trimester 3!

How big were you when you were born? Are you expecting a big baby? Have you heard of the birth weights being similar before?

I was 6 lb 7 oz.my husband was 7lb 13oz. Our first was 7lb 1oz, so right in between us! I heard the baby's is usually an average of the parent's which was true for our first. Though I have a fried who is pretty small probably about 5'3'' and 125 lbs her husband is probably 6' and their first was a girl and was small/average, but her next three were boys and everyone of them was really big. From what she said it sounded like the dada as the same at birth. So it sounds like the boys took after dad and were big boys right from birth!

  • I've never heard that one before. I was 7lbs when I was born, but I came a few weeks early. My cousins had several 10 pounders recently, and they definitely were not that big when they themselves were born. This is interesting to think about though.
  • I was 7oz but my SO was HUGE was he was born. Hopefully your doctor is right and the baby weighs more like the mom. HAHA

  • I've never heard it before either, but since my doctor said it... I had to at least listen and not just shake my head and think so myself "yeah, right!" :)

I guess we'll see as this progresses! It IS interesting to think about, isn't it?
  • I was 7'10. I am Preggo with twins and it is my goal to make two big babies!!

Hmm, hearing this is a first for me (which is why I love checking into Dec15)... I hope your doc is right about this - I was 7 lbs & change at birth and all legs, which is the easy bit for mama, I hear ;) ...guess we'll see!
  • Yeah, I love chunky babies but man, the thought of squeezing out a 9 pounder. Eeeeeek! Come'on baby... be nice to mama!
  • I was 11 lbs. and my brother was 12 lbs!  My son was only 7.1 lbs.

  • I was a 9 pounder. I'm officially scared shitless. :-O
  • I was 6'12" when I was born. My dd was 5'1" and my son was 6'13". My husband was a 9' baby so I guess they were closer to me so I guess it could be true

9 pounds of beautiful healthy baby, don't forget!
I'm scared too, but I've been assured by my mama friends that our hormones do something crazy to our brains toward the end, they take over and give us tons of strength and bravery out of nowhere... Definitely counting on that over here!

I was 8'1 and my husband was 7'10, but our son was 9'15! So I don't agree with your dr ;)
  • Not sure if this will provide any help, but my sister was 8lb 3oz when she was born and her husband was a 10lb baby. She had a daughter in Feb and the baby was 10lb 5oz! She went 1 week past her due date (and yes, vaginally...ouch). She also didn't watch her diet and weight gain, and gained over 45lbs.

Her sister in law (husband's sister) said that her first baby (girl) was 10lb as well, however with her second baby (also a girl) she watched everything she ate and the baby was only 7lb 2oz.

Does watching your diet affect the baby's weight? Obviously I don't mean dieting, I just mean watching to make sure you're not in taking too many calories and making healthy decisions when it comes to eating? I know it will affect mama's weight..but baby's?
  • I was 5.10 at birth my dh was 6.2. Our babies were 8.13, 8.3 and 9.7!
  • This is just my opinion but I defiantly believe weight gain and "diet" play a part. Hoping to continue a healthy active path. But either way, yes a healthy babe is my ultimate goal no matter what size.
  • I was 10lb 2oz... So BIG!! My brothers were both 9+ lbs and so was my DH. I'm definitely a little nervous to see if this carried over to my baby. But my mother swears up and down that bigger babies are easier to deliver. She said I was a breeze.... I guess you have gravity on your side :-)

  • I was 8.9 and DH was 9.3 our DD was 8.13!
  • I also wanted to add that in my What to Expect... book it said that the mother's birth weight can be a predictor of your child's birth weight. But other factors such as diet also comtribute.

  • SO and I were both 9+... yikes. But my mom also gained 50 lbs with each of us... which I sincerely hope does not happen to me.

My doctor told me the more weight you gain, the more your baby gains. That's why they have a recommended weight gain for us depending on our starting weights.
  • I was 9lbs. My little guy was 6.7. Hopefully these two aren't huge!

I was 7lb and DD was 8.13. My DH was over 10 pounds. They are already expecting this baby to be a bigger. I do love chucky babies.

I was 8 something...and I think husband was too. His brother was a ten pound despite being one of TWINS, which is horrifying.

My husband is huge as an adult, please let him make normal sized babies though. Please.
Is heartily apologizing to her child in advance for genes that predispose them to shitty vision and being Too Damn Tall.
  • DH was 7.5 lb I was 8.5, our baby was 6.5 lol
  • I was 7'1 born and a c section the father of my kids was 5lb something and he was a prem baby my daughter was 2 weeks late. And was 8'4 and my son was on time and was 9'11 I'm now with a different partner and il be asking his mum what his birth weight was, my old fella was 6'1 my man now is 5'9
  • My perinatologist said there is absolutely a genetic link in baby sizes. My grandmother had three 10+ pound babies, I was 8lb 14oz, and my DD was 9lb 4oz.

I gained 28lbs and continued to run through my entire pregnancy.

I've also had 2 friends that each gained 80lbs and had 6lb babies!

  • My mom says she gained a lot of weight while pregnant (no idea how much) and we were all under 7lbs when born. (There are 7 of us.) I have gestational diabetes, and one of the possible complications if I do not keep my blood glucose levels in check, is having a bigger baby. I would prefer to have a baby smaller than 9lbs, but really just hoping for healthy!
  • I hope this is true. I was upper 8, my brother was 9 something and my sister was lower 8. My half sister was mid 7 and my half brother was upper 6. On my boyfriends side no one was under 10. I would take 8 over 10. I am a small person but he just tells me I have the hips.
  • I firmly agree with that as well. My first daughter was exactly in-between her father and I. I was 6lbs 8oz when I was born and he was 6lbs. Our daughter was 6lbs 4oz!

My husband now was around 7lbs, so thankfully I can still hope for a smallish baby. I do not have baby bearing hips!

  • Oh no. I hope not. I was almost 11 lbs when I was born...
  • Hmm I'm not sure, I was 7lb2 born and my partner was 7lb7. Our son was born, weighing in at 9lb9. It is scary having a big baby but this time around if my raindbow baby is smaller than 9lb9 I'm not going to know what to do with something that seems so tiny ! Ha ha xx
  • I guess I never heard about this one either....but I was 7 lbs 8 oz and my husband was 13 lbs!!!$&&@ my DD was 9 lbs 6 oz! My DH is the youngest of four boys and they got bigger ever time according to MIL!!! I'm cooking baby #2 now so we will see if this holds true!

I gained in the normal range...and my belly was not measuring larger...I had a 9 lb 6 oz baby (I was also 13 days late). I had a gf who gained 60 lbs...yes 60 and she had a 6 lb baby. I guess I just don't know how much that correlates (even though u heard it from your doc).

  • I was a scrawny 6 lbs 3 oz. My first born was 6.8, second was 6.4, yet our third princess was 7.11 which is funny because she was the biggest at birth yet she's the short petite one out of all of them now.
  • I was 6 lbs even. My son was 8 lbs 14 oz. Be weary of your doctor monitoring your baby's weight. He/she may try to induce you early or scare you into an unnecessary c-section. Remember that most women can easily give birth to large babies. I am refusing to have any ultrasounds done after 20 weeks. If the doctor sees that your baby is on the lager side, he or she is likely to unnecessarily intervene, which could be harmful for you and baby.

I totally agree with you!!! I have had friends who where told they were having large babies so they needed to induce...yea their babies were in the 6 lb range!!! Their guess can be up to 2 lbs off in either direction so I agree let that baby cook if mom and baby are doing well!!!

  • I was 6lb 7oz when born. My two oldest were 9lb 11oz, and 8lb 4oz (their dad was over 9lbs). My LO was 8lb 9oz and her dad was 10+ lbs. my diet was heavily monitored with the last two to counteract the gestational diabetes.

I was 8 lbs 14 oz and my son was 9 lbs 7 oz ! I'm on track for another big boy, I have to see an obstetrician at 7 months to determine if I will be able to have this baby naturally.
  • I was preme 2lbs 2.5 oz so I'm hoping this one doesn't ring true for me.
  • I know I was 7 something, my sister was 8 something, and my brother 5 or 6 something so not sure if that's super accurate. My doc would probably agree with the statement though since he wanted to know how much hubby and I were at birth and said we could probably expect a small baby too....(I kinda expected one anyway since I'm only 5'2 and 105lbs PP and hubby is 5'4 and 125lbs so if we birthed a huge baby it would be kinda confusing)
