Francis or Frances for a girl (middle name)?

So, DH and I have decided on our name should we have a girl (find out in two weeks). We would name her Audrey Francis. Audrey was his grandmother's name and Francis was my grandmother's middle name.

However, I'm wondering if Francis or Frances is the more appropriate feminine spelling? My gma spelled it with an 'i' but I'm not opposed to changing it if Frances is the more commonly used feminine spelling. I've looked online and have seem both marked as feminine.

I don't know enough about this stuff to know if one is more standard than the other or if this is one of those names that doesn't actually matter.

Any help would be appreciated!

  • Thanks, ladies. That's what I thought too and then saw one random name website that had Francis marked as mn and fn and it got me confused! I'm totally fine changing the spelling to an 'e' if that's the feminine version. Very helpful!
  • Lovely name! You can have a spelling pass if it's honoring a loved one but if you change the spelling to the correct female spelling, it'll still be very special!

  • Let's just hope this one is a girl since we are COMPLETELY stuck on boy names! This is our first and we really have no preference for boy or girl at all (we would adore having both!) so if we're simply talking ease of naming, pretty please girl, girl, girl! :)

Yup, we have the same problem in reverse gender. We're going to be ttc very soon and our boy name is set. We keep bouncing between 3 girl names and I know if we have a girl first it's going to be crazytown picking the final name.

  • I prefer Frances also. Very pretty.
  • What a nice name!  My mother's middle name is Francis (and she spells it that way), so that is what always looks right to me, no matter the gender.
  • Luuuuuurve Frances. Lovely name!
