Reducing Risk of Peanut Allergy

A pregnant coworker just told me that her doctor advised her to eat peanuts or peanut butter almost every day to reduce the risk of her baby developing the allergy. So I looked into it and found this article that supports this:
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/270605.php

I don't usually eat a lot of peanut butter but since this is such a major life changing allergy, I will start eating some peanut butter sandwiches!

Has anyone else heard of this or done this?

I haven't heard of this before, but was wondering about it the other day.

  • I've heard this too! I'm not sure you need to go out of your way to eat it every day but it's a great protein filled snack, so you could def incorporate it a few times a week certainly :) your baby isn't going to have a reaction in utero, so it can only help!
  • I hate PB, so ate peanuts a lot, and my DD is fine. We've been giving her PB since 10 months.
  • DD is highly allergic to peanuts and cashews. We have to carry an epi-pen. I ate PB throughout my pregnancy. I asked her allergist about this and she said don't restrict your diet, but it was a really small study so she's not convinced yet.

    Can't hurt though!
  • Interesting!
  • I heard this as well, I do eat nuts regularly and peanut butter so if it helps, great!

Wait a sec! I've read the exact opposite - that to avoid peanut allergies in baby mtb's should refrain from eating peanuts/products while preg.

Admittedly, this seems counterintuitive so I'm about to dive into the above article..and any others that anyone comes across please post links!

Man I hope you girls are right, life's not the same without my pb on toast in the mornings!
  • I've read the opposite too! But I'm not sure, I eat it here and there not too concerned about it. Although this discussion made me head into the kitchen for a spoonful of it. Haha
  • I've heard both sides and I'm not sure if either one is legit BUT my mom ate a crap ton of pb&j when she was pregnant with me and almost none with my brother and I'm fine and he has a peanut allergy. Make of that what you will haha.

On another note, have you all ever put it on pancakes then syrup?! Oh my gah! Best thing, ever!
I do this with pancakes and waffles -- SO GOOD!!!

I melt my peanut butter and mix it with syrup for waffles. SO GOOD.

Edited to add @kyleneum13 I just saw your post said almost the same thing. My bad!!!

Seriously girls? Did you have to go there with the peanut butter on waffles? You're actually making me get out if bed (it's midnight here in england) and go down to my freezing cold kitchen for every peanut butter-based snack I can scrounge up.

I will get you back for this @kleshelle and @mamamagagail :)
  • I love peanut butter and would be so sad if my child had this allergy! I did sample this peanut butter alternative called sunbutter at the grocery store a few months ago and it was actually really good. Its made using sunflower seeds. I was pleasantly surprised.

I ate pb regularly while pregnant and my DS had a peanut allergy (poor guy, I can't imagine my life without pb) I think it could go both ways.
  • My doctor advised me of the opposite after all the studies she read linking peanut consumption during pregnancy to babies developing the allergy. She put up a really good argument so I went off all nuts for my first pregnancy. So far so good with baby one. I'm hoping to have safe results with baby 2 so I'm going peanut-free during this pregnancy as well.
  • I have not seen that study but I ate a lot of pbj's my last pregnancy and have also been craving peanut butter this pregnancy. Normally I don't eat much peanut butter so it's kind of weird! Hopefully it's a good thing.
  • I can't live without peanut butter. All I want now is a pb and banana sandwich. Or waffles with pb and chocolate syrup.

I LOVE peanut butter, but for some reason it makes me nauseous, even 13 weeks in. Anyone else? I hope this study is wrong b/c I've been avoiding it so I don't feel sick. I was actually starting to wonder if my little peanut might actually be allergic b/c of the nausea, probably unrelated, but it does seem weird.

My mother had an aversion to peanuts and peanut butter throughout her pregnancy. Turns out I'm severely allergic to peanuts and have been my entire life. If you have an aversion, I would say without a doubt don't eat it. It may do more harm than good!

It's weird that doctors are recommending opposite things. I'm going to look into this. But, make sure your peanuts and PB is organic ladies!!! Those peanut crops are super covered with pesticides and other chemicals that get mixed right in

There was large study done in 2013, basically they tracked pregnant women's diets throughout and the women who avoided peanuts where higher risk of having a child with a peanut allergy, and women who ate peanuts tended to have children without the allergy. It's easy to find the actual study if you google for it. :)
It's a pretty large study but it's hard to say because it's the first evidence of its kind it appears
  • Also it says the women at lowest risk ate peanuts up to five times a week, that's a lot of peanuts
