Woke up 2:38am with the worst leg pain!!

I woke up with the worst leg pain feeling like it would never go away.. I almost fell out the bed trying to straighten my leg and the more I straighten my leg the more it hurt. I tried to change positions and ultimately had to grip the foot board to try to stress my muscle.. I have had muscles spasms and cramps... not the same feeling .. I felt like I was paralyzed and then I started crying because it would stop... it went on for like 20 mins.....Anyway anyone else woke up to this nightmare???

    Charlie horse!

Flex your foot when it happens. Don't point! It's hard to do because the muscle is so taut but the pain will end in a few seconds when you flex your foot.

Water and magnesium help prevent them but sometimes they still happen.

  • I dealt with this two weeks ago for three nights straight. My only remedy was more water and adding coconut water to the mix. It's already 100 degrees where I live and clearly baby is thirsty.
  • Oooh I've had Charlie horse cramps wake me up twice so far, it's so terrible! I brace my foot against the wall and use it to bend my toes up (not point!) It helps but hoodamn the pain! You have my sympathies

This! I get them every night and find if I flex my foot toward my head it goes away almost immediately. It will feel difficult to do, but it works!

I got a charlie horse Friday at 6am and had the same thing happen: severe cramping in my calf that brought me to tears, all while scaring the crap out of my husband and two pets. My leg finally feels almost normal today, but I had a really hard time walking Friday and Saturday. Thankfully I have compression sleeves (I wear them when I run) and put one on yesterday while I was at work and it helped. Don't ever try to point your toes to stretch (this was how mine started and didn't stop) and try to pull your toes towards your face, either by flexing your foot or you bending your toes up.

I've increased my water, coconut water, and banana intake since, but there's no way to prevent it. Stretching your calves and soleus muscle (runs under the calves) regularly can help also.

  • Feeling your pain they are the WORST !!! Holyyyyy moly... Agreed with the rest ... I talked to my doc about it and she said same what everyone else says- up the water, bananas help, coconut water helps, and 400 mg magnesium tablet supplements would be helpful
  • I have two solutions: papaya pills (high in magnesium but obviously since its a pill talk to doc first), and have your husband build you a roller. Mine made me one for under $10 and it feels amazing and helps when I get cramps. Bonus: I roll out my feet on it too!
  • I hate those!!! I got them multiple times a night in my first pregnancy and I actually practiced my labor breathing to get through them haha. Sounds dumb, I'm sure, but the feeling really is kind of similar to a contraction, the way it tightens up so painfully and then dies away.
  • This happened to me last Friday at 4:50am. Talk about a rude awakening. My calf has been sore ever since, I've been trying to be better about hydrating ever since.

    I'll definitely try this !

  • [-O<   <~~~ your face when you realize whats happening in your leg and hoping it passes quickly! Charlie horses are thee worst.

With my last pregnancy it happened ALL the time. This time around (be 28 weeks tomorrow) Ive only had one charlie horse so far. I find that stretching and keeping hydrated have made a world of a difference!

So I got my first holy-shit-ow middle of the night Charlie horse after my first foray into rating about labour and practicing some mindful breathing exercises and I think I need a lot more practice because when it woke me up all I could do was wimper and think I would do anything for this pain to stop! It made me laugh after because I had been feeling fairly confident about my ability to handle labour... Until the first Charlie horse.

  • Guh...these are the worst! I don't know why but putting the bottom of your foot against a cold surface (floor, wall etc. ) This works really quickly and saved me during my first pregnancy!
