1st Trimester

Pregnancy symptoms you wish "they'd" told you about

So it turns out a glowing complexion and yacking up lunch aren't the only first trimester gems that we get to deal with. I was already aware of a few of the more obscurely referenced symptoms out there (Constant peeing, feeling slow and stupid etc..) but there were a few nasty ones I wasn't aware of OR prepared for.

Any you want to add?
  • Going through an awkward "is she pregnant or just getting fat?" stage. I was NOT prepared for this. I deal with bloating fairly frequently because I have a lower GI disorder. But i have never, never in my life, experienced bloating on this kind of scale before. Add to that the fact that muscles are relaxing all over the place which makes things digest super slowly. And even though I haven't gained any weight, I appear to be retaining water, air, salt and whatever else you can possibly imagine.
  • Not being able to poop. Like, at all. So to add insult to injury in my last point, not only am i bloated, I'm also HARDCORE constipated. I might poo every three or four days now. And that's WITH colace. But my bowels are still making the stuff, making my bloated stomach even HUGER than before.
  • Too bloated for regular clothing, too small for maternity clothing. Ok this sucks but i should have seen it coming. Nobody grows all at once. Still. I'm in maternity clothing now simply because I can only wear so many foldover skirts and yoga pants before my bosses stop letting me play the pregs card. And some of them, even in an XS, are awkward.
  • The dizziness. Between that, the headaches and the nausea, I feel pretty much hungover 24/7. (Which, on the upside, has helped with the wine cravings :) )
  • Random sneezing and sore throat. Nope. Not sick. Not allergies either from what i can tell. Just there because, I dunno, eff me, I guess.
  • Deeper voice. This is really creepy because i wasn't aware of it until somebody told me. YOUR VOICE GETS HUSKIER because you're carrying more testosterone than normal (I know, don't ask me why..) That same hormone that causes you to grow all that excess body and EFFING FACIAL HAIR. (Luckily for me, I haven't experienced any extra hair yet. If anything, my body hair takes LONGER to grow than it used to - which is also, somehow, apparently related to increased testosterone :\ )

  • OH yeah, one more. FRIGGING NOSEBLEEDS.

Seriously. I get why they happen. Increased blood pressure, blah blah.. But seriously? Waking up and there's blood everywhere? It's very disconcerting.

  • Definitely with you on the constipation and the dizziness! Even before I tested positive, I had what I told my mom was "the worst constipation of my life" (she's an OB so our convos can get a little TMI, haha). Like *massive* bloat and gas that wasn't going anywhere.
  • @groovylocks I'm currently experiencing the lovely symptoms of sore throat and runny nose as well as what someone on here called the pregnancy shits and bloat with tons of gas sorry for the TMI!

  • My hair is falling out! I seriously have never had that before and it freaked me out. Of course my ob just laughed at me and said "Sorry it happens".

Mine is falling out too. But my hair is super thick so I'm fine with that. It's also gotten curlier. What shocks me the most is how rarely I have to shave now. It's great, being summer. I'm not complaining about that at all. I normally have super fast growing hair. I grew my hair our from a short layered pixie January 2015 to three inches past my shoulders today. Body hair follows this vein. So yeah. Not minding this one bit.
  • I worry about my hair. I have pretty thick hair and I hear so many women say that after kids, their hair thinned right out. Every time I brush and wash my hair, I swear a ton comes out.
  • I am definitely experiencing the dizziness and bloating.  I am also tired, like, All. The. Time.  I have to force myself to work out as soon as I get home for work, or I will never get off the couch once I am on it.  Also, I have been experiencing being very cold, especially at night.  Last night, I was in a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, and fleece pants, and my hubby was in an undershirt and boxers.

  • Cold! Right?? I'm freezing all the time. Most women are like furnaces, they say. Not this cowboy.
  • 1. Gas

    2. Itchy and dry flaking nipples

    3. Lower back and hip ache from the very start and throughout

    4. Swollen lady bits during sex

  • Warning- TMI:
2nd trimester constant discharge. Get ready for it ladies. Happened with my last pregnancy. Had to wear pantiliners all day.

I just heard about this today. In detail from my awesome doc. I'm going to stock up on pantyliners because things are already... It's.... I'm expecting it?
  • My legs decided to start peeling - like as if I had a *major* sunburn... I haven't spent any great amount of time outside in two weeks...

  • The dizzy spells from the heat, yesterday it hit me like a wall of bricks! One second I'm feeling good and sipping some ice lemon water, the next I apparently got up, gave my water to baby daddy, passed out barfed on myself then woke up covered in vomit. Also I was at a baby shower and mortified. Holy hell! What did I do in my past life to have that happen!
  • The sinus issues. Haven't had it yet this pregnancy but I'm just waiting.

  • Gas, bloating that makes me look WAY more pregnant than I am (10wks currently), constipation, super caffeine sensitivity, exhaustion almost to the point of narcolepsy, more gas and bloating with ginormous awful belches, dizziness, tons of mucus in my nose and other places, huge breakouts but mostly only on my chest, and that's all I can come up with for now.
  • OH! And being completely ravenously hungry but having to eat teeny tiny portions 686426885 times a day.
  • I have the craziest, weirdest and vivid dreams. Last night I dreamt that I was getting married in this huge 500 person church and I was passing out kittens to all my guests as favors. I have no idea why! LOL!

This is my 3rd pregnancy and the other symptom you don't hear about often is the snoring and the sweating or freezing. All of a sudden i'm snoring as loud as a chain saw or I can't make up my mind to either keep the blankets on or off at night!
  • one hell of constipation i literally dread going to the bathroom
bloatd like im carrying a pile of stones
im suffering from the sneezing n sore throat
    back n hip cramps
dizzy spells here and there Thank God i ain passing out
and oh not to forget all day sickness
i am a walking bag of sickness n this is my first worst trimester
  • The increase in ALL body fluids!!! people have commented about increased discharge which yes I had with my 1st but I had excess saliva snot and ear wax too!!!!
  • THIS.Best post I've seen all day. Every bit of this is accurate.
  • Being clumsy! I bump into everything, if the room is 50ft wide with a chair on one end, you can bet I'll find my way there to walk into it.
  • I hope these things go away pretty soon:

#1 - Fatigue - I always feel like I could just lay down right in the middle of the floor in my office and take a nap. Always.
#2 - Brain fog - Wondering if it comes along with the fatigue, but I always feel like I can't concentrate or focus, or I have trouble remembering something simple for a moment.
    #3 - Bloat - Good God. It's awful.

Yes to all of these! Except I haven't noticed the huskier voice...hmmm! I found this shirt that says, "There's a baby in here, not an extra meal!" and I so want it so people don't just think I gained a ton of weight (when I haven't gained any!)

Oh the hunger! I knew your appetite increased but not like this. I just want to eat constantly. I am never full even when I am full to the point of bursting.

On the plus side, I didn't realise your metabolism became so fast. The amount I eat I should have gained 50lbs by now.

    1. Constipation

    2. Pain and contractions during/after orgasm in first trimester.

    3. Just having cramping in general. If the doc told me this to begin with, I woukd have spent the first 6 weeks panicing!
  • Lots of gas! Also I sort of have the opposite of constipation :-S and the other day my tailbone started hurting so bad I can barely sit!!

So here's a new one that I'm just sort of coming around to realizing.

    Everything hurts.

Not terribly or in a worrisome way. But it just hurts. My breasts hurt all the time and when they don't hurt, they start to itch like crazy. They also react to MOST soaps by turning bright, blotchy red and getting super itchy.

My bump hurts too. I can feel it pulling and stretching and changing. It's not painful exactly but there is occasional discomfort i wasn't prepared for.

And the gas, which started out manageable, hurts the most. It hurts so much that it's literally pushing against my stomach, making eating decent portions difficult. Trapped air moves through my body 24/7 causing my stomach to swell and be very painful to touch - this is something i deal with due to a disease i have anyway. Pregnancy has made it ten times worse. I was on a very sparse, very strict diet to manage my symptoms but that diet is not appropriate for pregnancy and foods that trigger my symptoms (Beans, corn, wheat, dairy, starches and sugar) are all things I'm trying to consume to give the baby a healthy start. Which is why i believe i'm suffering from such chronic and extreme gas.

Hey my tailbone hurts too! If i sit too long it starts to get uncomfortable. I used to have a wee cyst on it, nothing serious but it feels like that's coming back. But when i hunt for it, no sign of it.
  • My throat has been hurting and itchy the past few days. Last night I was coughing ALL night because of it. Not sure if its pregnancy related or that I am getting sick. Either way its slightly annoying but I know things could be much worse.

  • Oh I'm so glad I'm not alone! I have to sneak into the bathroom at work to put lotion on my chest! Only a few co-workers know I'm pregnant so it's very odd looking.
  • I have period cramping, excruciatingly painful breasts and nipples and extreme nausea. There isn't really anything I can do for the cramping, I have nausea bands, is there anything I can do for the painful breasts?
  • I never thought it was possible to be tired ALL THE TIME! I go to bed around 9pm every night. I can't make it any later than that unless I have like a 2 hour nap between 2-5.
  • I'm dealing with my painful pornstar boobs (can we add that into the mix?) by binding them up in sports bras. My underwires just aren't cutting it... The lack of movement really helps for the discomfort. Hope it helps you too!
  • TMI just in advance...I sometimes get an odor from down there...I shower everyday and am healthy...is anyone else having this? Dory again for the TMI
  • @lct11590 Girl you are not the only one trust me! I recently participated in a thread about this problem basically it's just something else we have to deal with because we are peeing more frequently taking vitamins and our lovely hormones. I would suggest sleeping in the nude if you can to air the girl out and wearing cotton undies and pantie liners
