Non-alcoholic beer?

With my first pregnancy, I was so nauseated right out of the gate, coffee and beer and all of the good stuff you have to give up didn't even sound good, so it was very easy to totally abstain.

This time around, especially with beautiful summer weather and lots of social events, I am craving beer HARDCORE.

Do any of your doctors tell you it is okay to have non-alcoholic beer during pregnancy? I know there's trace amounts of it in things like O'Douls, so you still have to limit intake. I'm just wondering about one or two at the next barbecue we're invited to.

Thoughts?

  • I drank it last time - my doctor didn't have a problem with it (or small amounts of wine). I had 3 over the course of 3.5 hours on Sunday.

  • I see pregnant women drinking them out in public often and my friends all do too so go for it. I tried one the other day but it was just not the same and made me super bloated...I'm probably just being whiney though! I've been drinking lots of virgin mojitos!

I like St. Paulie non-alcoholic the best, although none of them are great. My doctor was okay with me sipping off my husband's regular beer every now and again. That was much more satisfying for me than the n/a stuff.

  • FWIW, Clausthaler and Kaliber (made by Guiness) were my favorite N/A beers last time.

  • Wish I would have thought of this with my first two! I'm not a heavy drinker as is, but I craved it so much with them! I swear I could smell it all the time. Never occurred to me to get the non alchoholic stuff. Maybe I'll try it if I start craving it again.

I recently heard from a neonatal endocrinologist acquaintance that a glass of wine every now and then is no problem at all. (He 'allowed' his daughter to drink wine and was adamant about the difference between occasional sipping vs. binge-drinking.) That was surprising to hear, but I haven't acted on it. When I first found out about the pregnancy, I was too nervous to consider doing anything questionable; now I'm beginning to wonder if it might be worth it. Like once. Probably won't (mostly because the little buzz is not worth the worrying). But slightly on the fence, I guess.

So, yeah... as you can see, my internal moral/fearful jury is still out... definitely curious about what others think/do.

ETA sorry for posting about alcohol and wine here, rather than nonalcoholic beer... I just didn't want to start a whole new thread for it.
