New here + need some advice

Hi ladies!

My husband and I just found out Sunday night that I'm pregnant! This will be our first child. We are super excited but also cautious because I had a miscarriage in February. I'm driving myself crazy with all the thoughts of what if this one ends like the last but I'm really trying to trust God and know that he's in control.

So the advice I'm asking for- we have a wedding on Saturday and all our friends will be there. I just know that when they see I don't have a drink in my hand that they'll be suspicious and some May flat out ask us if we're pregnant. Any tips on what my excuse should be or should I just pretend to drink the whole night? TIA!

And congrats everyone else on your little beans!!

Could you just tell them that you have opted to not drink while TTC? Do they know you are trying or about the mc? Also, congratulations and welcome!

^^This. That way you don't have to lie. The other option is to pull a Lily & Marshall from How I Met Your Mother. Pretend and have DH down all your drinks. This, however, to my recollection didn't turn out to well on the episode ;)

I have a friend that can't drink due to medications and when she goes out, even with people knowing this, they constantly pressure her to drink anyway. So she always orders like a shirley temple or a ginger ale and has them put a garnish on it, so it looks alcoholic and nobody asks.

I agree with the above.  You can also day you're DD.  Or just order soda water with lime-no one will know it's not a really drink!

  • Order a fake drink
  • Welcome and congrats! Sorry for your loss. I am not a big drinker as it is but on occasion we will go out with "drink pushers". I will typically order a sprite with a lime. It looks like a cocktail (Coconut rum and sprite) and people don't bother me! Other mocktails you can get are Shirley temple or orange juice with grenadine.

  • You could tell the bartender to just give you non-alcoholic drinks all night. That way it looks like you're ordering and drinking when you aren't.

  • My cousin taught me this one. Take the cap of some berry flavored Mikes drinks. Pour grape juice in it. Put the cap back on it. Then grab those out of a designated area later and carry one of those around. If it's not a wedding where you could be carrying one of those around you could put grape juice in a wine glass and do the same. Otherwise get the real thing and just pretend to sip on it and pour some out at random times when people aren't watching. I'm maid of honor in a very big drinking wedding this weekend and that's what I'll be doing.

  • I ran into this issue a lot while TTC -
being on-call helped (might have to go in...) which was legitimate sometimes, and involved carrying the pager when I was with friends who didn't know my on-call schedule
"I'm not feeling well" - also generally works, no one wants details...
Promising DH I'll drive so he can drink tonight...
"Diet" - why yes, they just don't need to know its the pregnancy diet...
Ordering mocktails out of sight (or having DH be a sweetheart and getting a refill, or getting there early and swearing the waiter/ress to make all my pina coladas virgin and SAY NOTHING - then they get a nice tip for following directions)

also props to @sheashea407 for bringing in HIMYM - I don't think it worked out well for either couple in that episode, but if DH can hold his alcohol, certainly an option.

  • Say you're on antibiotics and you can't drink while you're on them? Otherwise, PPs suggestions are good :)

  • When my husband and I went to dinner with friends while pregnant with our first, we both got sangria and would switch glasses when no one was watching. Worked fairly well except a suspicious friend was actually watching to see if I ever really drank. She didn't call me out on it, but let me know she was on to me when I announced my pregnancy later. :-)
