IM SO EXCITED TO FIND OUT IF MY BABY IS...

HEALTHY.

I think some people have forgotten what anatomy scans are primarily for. To check that everything is okay with baby's development, to check the brain is functioning as it should, to check the heart has all the chambers it needs, to check the baby's bladder, lungs, face, limbs.

There's a small bonus where you can find out the sex of the child if you want to. But it's just that... A bonus. Being pregnant and imagining your baby is exciting, I'm not trying to squash anyone's excitement. It just seems to be a little obsessive at the moment on this board. If the baby isn't in a good position, they may not even be able to tell you. I wonder what women thought about before they could tell via ultrasound. Or before there were ultrasounds full stop! We are extremely lucky that we can check up on these growing babies to see if they're okay.

All good things come to those who wait ladies :-)

I have a question about the scan. My doctor said at my last appointment that I'll go in around 19w, I'm 17+5 today...they'll do the scan in detail, checking everything, and then it gets sent outta town and someone else reads it. It'll take another month to get the results back. In the meantime I just hafta hope and pray everything is ok and my little is growing healthy. Is that normal that your doctor doesn't read the scan him or her self? And is it normal to take that long?

My OB does the ultrasound, but I still have to wait for the results. She won't say a word during the u/s appointment.

I get the results at my next appointment. Depending on when it is.
The tech is not allowed to tell us anything. They will point out all the organs and the sex and that's it. It then goes to a doctor to read it and at my next appointment my midwife will have those results.
    That's pretty standard.

@jscasher exactly, bigger picture! I hope you get the results you want x

Thank you ladies. I wasn't sure how it all worked.
  • @tayzav ... wow, a month is a long time. It is pretty standard that whoever is doing the U/S just finds the things they're looking for and snaps the pics. Every time I have had an U/S tho, the tech will point out what they're looking at, "here is the left hand" etc.
The results will generally then be read and examined by a perinatologist. Thankfully, my practice has the perinatologist go over it with you right there at the appt.

  • Love this!

Yes I'm excited to POTENTIALLY find out what I'm having but I'm even more excited to see how baby is growing and developing. I'm just excited to look at the screen and see my child. That's all I want.
  • I completely agree. Although I almost envy those that can be so focused on the sex of the baby. It just makes me think that they are able to assume the child is healthy and not worry about there being something wrong.

Even after normal NIPT results, and favorable nt scan/blood results I find myself preoccupied with something being wrong. We've suffered losses though, including one due to Turner syndrome. I am sure that plays into my obsession with our upcoming anatomy scan and finding out if things still look good.

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Yep, this is what my doctor told me at my last appointment, the ACTUAL reason for the anatomy scan. Thanks for this post :)

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • So far, so good on all my tests. But every appointment I wait to hear everything it okay and I'm looking forward to hopefully hearing it at the anatomy scan. Knowing the sex is a bonus.
  • For me, I couldn't be more thrilled to find out the sex at my anatomy scan next week. In fact, that's all I'm really wanting to know! I will be extremely nervous going in as I am worried that something is wrong with my baby's development and I want nothing more than to only be excited about the sex of the baby! My last pregnancy was literally the most difficult thing I had to go through in my life. She had one thing after another wrong with her genetically, so for me, I'm really trying to stay positive and not get my hopes up that everything is ok until I know it really is. Hope this post makes sense.
My DH and I are expecting our first child! A boy.. we're thrilled :)http://www.thebump.com/profiles/kestes946/settings/avatar/index# BabyFruit Ticker BabyName Ticker Anniversary Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • THANK YOU for this! I was getting a bit irritated with some of the posts wondering what sex their baby is based on a very early ultrasound, etc. I'm not going to say I'm not excited to find out what sex our baby is, because I am, but I'm looking forward to seeing that everything is developing properly and that our little one is healthy and doing well. That's what really matters! If baby is healthy then we are getting exactly what we want!!
  • I agree that it's important to remember what the scans are for, but I just want to say aloud that since I've tried to stop thinking that I'm stoked to find out what I'm having and start thinking I'm excited to make sure things are ok, I've had so much more anxiety that something is actually wrong. I had a missed miscarriage, and had no idea something was wrong before my scan, and sometimes people just need to focus on the trivial parts of pregnancy, like what color blankets they're going to be buying...

This is similar to my experience the tech tells you what she is looking at and then Dr sees me depending on his pt load for the day sometimes he is able to look at the US before seeing me and sometimes he just does his check and tells me if anything not normal showed up at the next visit. I might get a phone call or a message through there system if something isn't right. Like a urine screen turned up positive so I had to go back in and do a clean catch so they could test it again to see what antibiotic to give me.

@MaeMae91 I'm sorry for your previous loss. I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and I've been extremely anxious the entire time, so I understand what you mean. However, I still wouldn't post photos of my 12 week scan and ask ladies to guess the sex...or pay for a scan at a point where it's too early to even be sure of the sex as the organs aren't finished developing... Which is what was happening on the board a LOT at my time of posting this. No exaggeration, 5 or 6 posts a day with the same thing. I hope your anxiety is calming as your pregnancy progresses, I'm finding mine is slowly now I can feel movement.
  • Love this post. After having a miscarriage in December, I have been so anxious for this anatomy scan and living in fear that something will be found wrong. While everyone keeps asking me, aren't you so excited to find out if it's a boy or girl I keep thinking to myself .... Ya that's great but I'm just excited to find out the baby is healthy. 1 Week.

Mine is in two weeks and I can't wait. Good luck next week! Hopefully all is well and baby is perfect.
  • My scan is this Thursday and I can barely sleep I'm so anxious. A healthy baby is all I could want!!
  • I have my us in about 12 hours!!! Can't wait to see this baby!! All the little fingers and toes! The little nose! Oh I love it! Finding out sex is definitely a bonus, not a must! That's if baby cooperates! ;)

  • Good luck with your ultrasounds today and this week ladies! Mine is next week :-) Here is hoping that we all see happy and healthy babies kicking around in there, who are developing nicely!
  • My scan is next Tuesday. I can't wait to find out my baby is healthy and everything is okay. With my son the scan discovered fluid in the kidneys and we had to see a specialist and I was just so stressed out. When he was born he was perfect btw. Didn't know what they saw in the scan usually does fix itself later in pregnancy and it was fairly common. This time I will ask more questions and hopefully there won't be anything to stress about!
  • Congrats to all getting great news at their scans.  I'm getting nervous as mine is Monday.  I pray my LO is healthy in there!  Best of luck to those of you still waiting as well.

My scan is next week, can't believe I'll be halfway. Totally agree; these scans are for a reason, the sex is a bonus on top of that. A girl I know recently went for her's and one of baby's arms hasn't developed as it should and requires more scans..do you think she gave a flying F what the sex was. Here's to healthy babies...regardless of the sex.
  • I have one with the AMA on Monday!  I can't wait.  congrats to the mommas who are already getting those great reports!  :)

Mine is coming up on Monday.  It is sooo exciting. :)
  • I'm having mine on Wednesday.  It's going to be a bit of a crush in there, since I've got my bf, my 2 girls, and one of our mutual best friends coming.  The friend is there to take the girls outside just in case anything is off and the tech needs more information or to explain any potential complications to us.  If that were to happen, I'd rather the girls not be there for it so we can get the questions we and the tech need answered without having to worry about them.

  • Agreed! Did my triple quad screening last week and anxious for results. Then our ultrasound is this Tuesday! Can't want to see that baby is growing as he/she should! I can hardly sleep because I can't wait to see! :D

From the moment I held you in my arms, I knew it was meant to be.

    I adore her smile,
    I cherish her hugs,
    I admire her heart.
    But most of all,
I love that she is my daughter.
