February 2016 Moms

Any special diet moms out there?

I do low carb / high fat. It's helped me tremendously (before I got pregnant).

I'm going to talk to my OB about continuing on that journey because I don't want to gain too much additional/unnecessary weight (I'm already overweight by MD standards anyways).

Just wondering if any of you February mamas had any special diets that you plan to stick with during pregnancy?

Yes, I have a very strict diet in terms of the standard American diet, but I am in no way endeavoring to maintain a calorie-cutting diet. Like you, I aim for plenty of protein and fat, and avoid non-veggie starches. I intend to eat exactly as much nutrient-dense food as I desire. IMHO There's no sense in starving the bean, but there's also no sense in chowing down on empty-calorie crap. :) Also, fwiw, I've been eating tons so far and my body is seeming to burn it all.

  • Ha ha, my only goal for diet with this pregnancy this time around is to not let myself overindulge liek I did last time. Im still about 10lbs over my last pre-pregnancy weight. Oh well.
  • I'm doing low carb. But its kicking my butt right now!
  • God bless you all doing low carb. I'm already falling asleep at 8:00, I can't even imagine what low carb would do to my energy. Lol

  • I'm allergic to gluten -- so, I'll still be avoiding through pregnancy. I wonder if this will make the bean also have a gluten allergy? Hmmm. I also tend to eat lower carb, but I'm going to try to "listen to my body." Haha. Everyone keeps telling me to do that...

I will be following the GD diet. It is lower in carbs but they stressed to me that I still need a certain amount of carbs for baby.

  • I was strict low carb for a long time, but I'll be adding in the healthy fruit and vegetable carbs because I'm not going to deprive my babe of those nutrients. I'll still steer clear of bad carbs like bread and pasta.

With my pregnancy 5 years ago I was addicted to stadium nachos. Like the circle tortilla chips, orange cheese and jalapenos. I'm gonna try not to go that route this time. Lol

Um now I want nachos! Dang it pregnancy cravings! I will have to be strong.

Do you know how hard that was to type?! I do too. lol
  • What about an alternative? Like melted cheese and something like a chip but that isn't a chip? I'm not food MacGyver or I could figure that out! Lol I have 2 nutritionist frienda keeping my butt in line! Lol I'm all about meatballs and chocolate... But not together. And I don't want pasta, just meatballs with a hint of tomato.
  • I'm vegan (have been for 16 years) and recently became gluten sensitive. Eating healthy vegan food won't be an issue (I get TONS of protein) but I can't imagine not being able to eat toast to calm my churning stomach. What's a GF girl to do???
  • Paleoesque but including dairy right now because I'm having so many food aversions! Ran out of options and I am hungry!! Hope to do a Whole 30 once the second trimester rolls around!

You could probably bake the low carb wraps until they are crispy and then use them kind of like chips.

  • I have celiac, so no gluten here either!
  • I'm going to talk to my doc about my diet and weight gain because I'm starting overweight. I had begun a wonderfully weight loss challenge with counting calories, watching my activity, and trying to eat clean/paleoesque. So I'm torn after losing almost 7 pounds that I'm not sure what to do now! But so far, with my eating, I have not been hungry, so I'm taking that as a positive sign. So I eat, but am trying to stay more active as I can.

  • I'll be on the GD diet for the next 9 months. The first six weeks are the worst...
  • I am a vegetarian so I plan on sticking with it throughout my pregnancy. Not sure if I'll need extra iron or something as a supplement though. Its been about 8 years since i stopped eating meat and I don't think I could eat it even if I tried!
  • I was looking for this discussion. I have been doing a low carb diet. If anyone speaks to there dr let me know there feed back. I know sometimes they take issue if your spilling ketones since it can look as if your diabetic. But I feel this is the healthiest way of eating for me. I am taking my prenatal vitamins and having plenty veggies.
  • I'm a vegetarian, but I don't have any worries about that. What I need to talk to my Dr. about is that I just lost 20 lbs doing straight calorie restriction and food logging. That's out the window for now but I'm still overweight and I hope I can get some calorie guidelines so I can be as healthy as possible. I'm also hungry all the time so I'm kinda afraid I'll have gained the whole 20 back by my first OB appointment.

  • I'm GF, dairy free, soy free, sugar free. Sometimes I'm not as sugar free as I should be, but I avoid gluten at all costs (I get migraines).
  • I have an autoimmune disease and recently lost 60 lbs doing whole30. It changed my life so much that I have been eating that way since September and plan to continue forever. This will be our third baby. I'm excited to see how this pregnancy differs.
  • I'm not on any special diet - I try to only eat meat and veggies though. It's been hard because NOTHING sounds good except carbs and sugary things.

I have bile reflux disease and I'm lactose intolerant so I avoid citrus, carbonation, caffeination, spice, basically anything strong tasting, fat, grease, dairy, and excess sugar. So I'm pretty much just going to stick to that and take my vitamins and calcium supps religiously to make sure I keep healthy. I'll be adding in more protein for the pregnancy too. I'm definitely going to be exercising throughout the pregnancy this time, I want to be in shape at the end. I still have 20 lbs from last pregnancy and I don't plan on gaining more than I have to this time!

  • Hypothyroid here so I avoid raw cruciferous veggies, and unfermented soy. Limiting polyunsaturated fats keeps my inflammatory disorder in check.
I also keep to a high protein, moderate carb and fat diet.
  • Yes! Paleo/Primal. I will have treats occasionally but for the most part no junk.

  • I do Low Carb/High Fat too! but I also have fruit and veg (I just avoid highest carb stuff like potato, carrot, pineapple). I have found myself being more strict since learning I was pregnant (don't know why). I plan on asking the doctor about the diet, but I get nervous talking to a doctor about it unless they are already familiar with the subject because then you just get a lecture on heart health. Ugh.

Also, for the nacho comments - you could try making Parmesan(or other cheese) crisps to act as the nachos.

I just had my gallbladder removed in April due to biliary dyskinesia. Best thing ever. Wishing you the best!

    Best of luck!
  • We are Paleo, but I have been drinking ginger ale during the 1 st trimester, it is the only thing that has helped with morning sickness.
  • I'm a vegetarian and haven't eaten meat in years. This is my first pregnancy so naturally I'm a little nervous, so I plan to add some fish in here and there but I'm not too thrilled about the idea, would love to hear from other vegetarians on what you did/are doing!
  • Hi MissesSJ,

I've just been upping my dairy, eggs and nuts as well as eating beans/rice combo as often as I can. You shouldn't have to eat fish if you don't want to as long as your Dr. is ok with it. I told mine last time that I was willing to add in meat if needed, but they weren't worried about it.

  • I am using an app called Lose It! I am not trying to lose just keep track of calories and nutrients! It has been really helpful! I am about 10 pounds over weight so I do want to watch my gain due to risk factors with gestational diabetes! This is our fourth child and we had one set of twins. I carried them until almost 39 weeks and felt awesome! I attribute that to nutrient rich foods, minimal indulgences, and regular exercise! I think the combo is what is important

I eat like I used to before. Making sure I get my daily protein intake. And Of course lots of veggies, fruits and water. My OB said I didn't need to worry about doing anything extra as long as I take my prenatals daily. She did blood work and everything looked super good (no anemia).

I'm gluten free. Though I have been very bad about sticking with it lately. My sister has celiac, but I had the genetic test and thankfully I don't have Celiac, but the GI doctor dx'ed me with gluten intolerance. I should be eating more primal, but at least I want to cut back on processed sugar because of my age and history of large babies puts me at risk for GD and I'd like to avoid it if I can. I am a Coke fiend (the brown bubbly kind, of course) and have worked my way down to one in the morning. I'm not a tea or coffee drinker, so that is my caffeine. I have a pain disorder (CRPS) and am weaning off my pain meds, which is rough. I am off my neurontin and am now weaning off my OxyContin. So I am allowing myself the comfort of coke as I'm weaning off my pain meds and dealing with nausea. My pain disorder is supposed to go into remission with pregnancy. So one I'm off of all the pain meds I will work on cutting out the coke. Baby steps.

Allergic to gluten! I have been eating paleo for years, but since I have gotten pregnant I have been craving and tolerating oatmeal and gluten free breads. If it makes me feel better and I can tolerate it, I am eating it.

  • I do a relatively low carb diet compared to SAD.... but my main rules are

Meat/fish: High welfare, sustainable and tasty
Vegetables: Big variety... even built a weekly meal plan once that had 40+ species
Fats: Grassfed Butter, coconut oil (also used on my body), olive oils
Carbs: Gluten Free (I have enough baby gas thank you!) but I am concious being dizzy all the time I add in things like potatoes, white rice, parsnips, fruit etc at least at every meal my typical daily intake is 80-120g
Dairy: Full fat, grass fed, love my greek yogurt in the AM
Other: bone broth in the AM

Note to anyone else.. if you have a gassy baby... don't eat an entire bag of roasted sprouts... I made that mistake yesterday (but they were tasty!)

Re Nachos: Yesterday as a "snack" I ate an entire tub of fresh hummus I had made (carmelized onion and smoked paprika) with a small bag of corn only tortilla chips... no regrets
