Ultrasound giant freakin baby!!

I'm 36 weeks and I had my ultrasound today. Baby is weighing in at 8.2 pounds!! I was beyond shocked!! He mentioned me possibly needing a c-section. It is pretty upsetting and scary!! Any one else just have their ultrasound and measurements done? Would you guys be freaking out too with an 8 pound baby at 36 weeks?

Re: Ultrasound giant freakin baby!!

  • It's just an estimate. Wouldn't freak out and wouldn't go the section route personally.

  • My aunts friend was told to have a c section because of the estimated weight of the baby and so she did, but the baby was like half a pound less 7 something. She was pretty mad she didn't have a chance to do vaginal.
  • I'd Talk about induction maybe in the next two weeks, once a baby goes over ten pounds theres a lot of risks :/ ones at birth as well as in the future. That's just me though.
  • At 36 weeks that weight is such a crapshoot. They told me my first was 7.5lbs the day I hit 36 weeks. He was born 36 hours later and was 8lbs 9oz. My nephew was born at 35 weeks and was 7.5 pounds. Some babies are just big. That's why there's a scale. Don't sweat it.
  • Omg that's a big baby, if the ultrasound is correct! I would be dreaming out lol
  • I would take the estimate with a grain of salt. I have heard of weight estimates being as much as 2 pounds off. Don't panic!

  • Yea, this late in the game ultrasound estimates can be wayyy off. My SIL was told that her son was over 9 pounds at 38 weeks, but when he was born a week later he was barely 7 pounds. I wouldn't settle on a c-section if you really want to try a vaginal. My OB knows that both DH and I were nearly 10 pound babies but that I really want a vaginal birth, so if he starts measuring huge, our first plan of attack is to go for an induction.

  • I just had my 32.5 week and the baby is breech head up feet down, and she weights 4lbs 12oz.. I'm freaking out. One she's a big baby and she has yes to turn. I started breech exercises today they haven't changed my due date but I just feel like it should have.
  • Don't freak out! We have been having growth scans for our girl being big since 32 weeks. Yesterday was our 36 week ultrasound and she's 'weighing' 7.5lbs. 94 percentile for her age! We have another scheduled ultrasound at 39 weeks to check on her again. I am pushing for a vaginal birth and praying she comes on her own naturally since I'm dilated at 1 cm 50% effaced. Praying really hard!! Don't panic though, your body knows what it's doing. Trust it and your doctors. You will be fine :)

Yes, I am also same number of weeks and they said the same to me. I also gained 10lbs in a month. I am feeling and looking really huge so I am not surprised by that estimated number....

Oh and dr did not say anything about c-section. Don't let them scare you. We were built to do this.

Ultrasounds can be off +/- 2 pounds. Don't stress too much. Being that the baby could be big, doesn't necesarily mean c-section. Do your research, you know your body.

My Dr. told me of a vbac he did 3 weeks ago where the baby was over 10 lbs. He talked the mom through it and she gave birth vaginally. It can be done. Good luck. :)
  • My husband's ex wife was told her son was only 7 lbs she had him nayurally and he was 9lb 11oz
    drs. Can be off lol
  • Those ultrasounds can be way off on guessing. I personally wouldn't let that scare me into a c section or induction.
  • Yeah, they estimated my last baby to be over 8 lbs, she was born at 7lbs 2oz. So needless to say, those estimates are vague at best.
  • Take it with a grain of salt... They could be off baby could weigh less or more. Personally I wouldn't agree to a c-section based on weight estimates. They induced me with my oldest because they thought she would be huge she ended up being average 8lbs even at 40+3.
  • I'm in the same boat! I had my 32 week growth scan today and my little girl is measuring in the 95th percentile!! My midwife told me we will do another scan at 38 weeks to see how big she is and then we will decide to have a c-section or try vaginal delivery. Ugh. I'm so disheartened. I don't want a c-section

I really don't know why all these doctors keep mentioning c-section because of an estimation of size. The ultrasound can be off by 2 lbs. Lots of women have had larger babies by vaginal delivery. Seems strange to me they would automatically assume c-section.
  • I got an ultrasound at week 30, and baby was 6.1 lb! I also got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and they said that is the reason why baby grew so much. It is pretty scary how big babies get! And getting them out is the scarh part to me.
  • With DS they told me he would be 7.5-8 lbs...then the delivery Dr estimated 8 lbs 7 oz....he was 6 lbs 5 oz.
  • I have a friend who's 1st was predicted to be 9 lbs and was 7 something and then the 2nd baby was predicted at 7 or 8 lbs and he was almost 10. Seems like it can be off quite a bit.
  • I had my DS1 vaginally at 38+6 weeks and he was 10 lbs 8oz 21in and i recovered fine don't let them scare you into a c section
  • I'm in the same boat and my OB mentioned possible injuries not only to the mother but also the baby as he/she comes out there birth birth canal. For example, if baby's head and abdomen measure above 90th percentile, and the head comes out but the abdomen gets stuck it could cause serious complications for the baby. Just something to think about as we always consider risk in vaginal or c-section births.

Are you sure your doctor didn't mean the shoulder could get stuck?  Fat squishes and I'm having trouble imagining the abdomen getting stuck particularly if the head did not.  Now shoulder getting stuck is another story and that could get serious very fast.

OP: as everyone is saying u/s can be off by a pound or more in either direction, is there a reason you are having growth u/s to begin with?  Gestational diabetes or something?

For what it's worth the ACOG does not recommend a c-section for suspected big baby unless baby is estimated more than 11lbs (in the absence of GD).  https://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0701/p169.html
  • Was told my 1st baby would be at least 8 pounds and she was 6 pounds 6 oz so don't worry :) this time at 30 wk scan was told baby is 3 pounds 14 oz so we c when he gets here
  • My 2nd was 6 14

---Thank you everyone for the advice! It does seem that ultrasounds can be quite a bit off. To answer your question, I was just going in for the standard 35 week anatomy U/S. I don't have any issue like GD. My midwife has you go in for an anatomy ultrasound at both 20 weeks and around 35 (I was actually 36 weeks). The size looked normal at my first exam so I was shocked to hear 8 pounds at this test. My husband was born over 10 pounds! Scary!!
