high hcg but only yolk sac?

does your hcg really matter that much in terms of what you see on an ultrasound? Or more just how far along you are? I went for an us at 6w2d and only saw a gestational sac and yolk sac - no fetal pole. The dr is convinced I'm actually a little earlier than that, and I honestly don't know because I only had 2 periods since my last pregnancy, so I'm guessing he's probably right. My hcg on the day of the ultrasound was 17,000, and from what I've heard other people say there should have been something with a level that high. But if I was only 5 1/2 weeks or so, what I saw would be right, regardless of the #....right? Does this make sense? I've been stressing so much over it and have 2 more days until my next ultrasound.

Re: high hcg but only yolk sac?

  • Exactly the same happened to me!!!hcg 19112 and only saw the sac!!a week later saw the baby and heartbeat!!!i just ovulate later...try not to stress too much(I was so anxious and stressed-had also some spotting but finally till now everything is ok.....

  • Same thing happened to me as well. Don't worry, it's still very early. A week later we heard the heartbeats and are expecting TWINS! :)
  • Going through this right now as well. Was 9 weeks 6 days based on LMP when went in for us yesterday, but have had extremely irregular and long cycles since going off birth control in January, so not 100% how far along I am. With vaginal us they saw gestational sac and yolk, but no baby. Was measuring 6 and 5/7 based on ultra sound. Tech made it seem hopeless then left me alone in an office for 30 minutes by myself waiting for doctor. He didn't want to give me false hope but said was possible timing was off and was just too early. Took Blood and HCGs were almost 43000 and progesterone was 6. Didn't speak to him just got results over voicemail. He seemed to indicate this was good. Back in tomorrow morning to do another blood test to see if HCGs are rising. Have not had terrible pregnancy symptoms but they have remained constant. No miscarriage symptoms. This is terrible. All I have been doing is reading blogs for the last 24 hrs. Lots of positive stories out there which is nice.
  • HCG has very little correlation to development because the ranges vary a lot. 6w2d is early to see anything.

  • The progesterone sounds very very low.....
  • Doctor said was normal in his voice mail...but who knows...should have second round of blood work back tomorrow midday.
  • This happened with my son... Saw the baby on my next trip. I think it happens to lots of people. Try not to stress :)
  • Any update yet? Your story sounds like mine! I went for my first ultrasound on Monday, I was 6 weeks 2days, they were able to find the sack but no fetal pole. I go back on Monday... I am hoping for good results!
  • Yeah, @ange81 any update! Thinking about all the women I have read about who are in same boat and praying for good outcomes!

@willashbaby, just re-listened to message from doctor progesterone was 10.6 not 6

Glad to hear that, it sounds much better!

  • This happened to me today based on LMP I should be 7w2d but US showed 5w6d no fetal pole just sac no heartbeat. US tech. said could be because I ovulated late she thought she saw a small heartbeat but to come back in a week. I'm so worried have miscarriage last year hoping this one sticks.

Saw the baby and a heartbeat! Phew!

So glad things turned out positvely for you! I'm waiting for my doctor to call back this evening with my follow up HCG test results...praying for good news!

Thinking good thoughts for you. This is our first pregnancy and I being naive had no idea this was a thing let alone a common thing.
  • Doctor never called back today with follow up HCG levels. Called to try and speak with him and they said he usually calls when through seeing patients, but he never did...annoying. This is nerve wrecking! He is supposed to be in this weekend so hopefully he calls. In the mean time I continue to google. Remembered that I was diagnosed with a tilted uterus a while back...have read about that making it hard to find the baby in other people's cases...continuing to pray for good news!!!
  • I have a tilted uterus as well. With both the ultrasounds I have had they had to do vaginally and not abdominally. How was yours done? Also, when I went in for my first I thought based on lmp I would be 7w and baby measured 5w6d. The tech I had was a dick and actually saw just an empty sack when he tried abdominally at this (i don't know why you would open your mouth after knowing someone has a history of miscarriages and say this to them- literally so emotional during that first ultrasound ). I'm convinced I ovulated later and I actually made them do another ultrasound about 9 days later to ensure that baby was growing properly and when we went back we saw baby was at 7w2d so almost right on track. I hope things turn out positively for you as well and hope some of your stresses are eased. I know mine were slightly. Now I just fear going back and not hearing a heartbeat. Keep us updated.
  • They did my vaginally, but have read some cases where they had to maneuver around quite a bit in cases of tilted uterused even with a vaginal ultrasound. My tech was pretty quick about it, so hoping she just missed it. Will definitely update when I hear anything hoping to get my blood work results from yesterday back today.
  • Before 7 weeks there's really not much to see. Especially at five weeks, they probably didn't even get to measure how far along you are. My first ultrasound was 7w 5d and my next is at 13 weeks. Based off my LMP they estimated me at 10 weeks when I came in for the ultrasound, but my cycles are irregular, so I actually assumed I was closer to 8 weeks and I was right. Scared the crap out of my OB though so I told her I knew I wasn't 10 weeks. They grow so rapidly in the first trimester, you'll see a world's difference in a few weeks, but I don't know about a few days.
  • Doctor finally called back. HCG levers rose from 43000 to 48000. He says he wouldn't expect to see it double once it's that high it sort of levels off.. Based on my dates, He thinks I'm about 5 1/2 weeks post conception and said if can pretty accurately guess conception that ultra sound is better indicator and that we should be seeing the baby and heart beat at this stage. Going in Monday for a final look, but not feeling very optimistic right now. Pretty much a blubbery mess.
  • Update...was 100% prepared for them to confirm blighted ovum, but got the best possible news we could expect today given our circumstances. Found baby and a heart beat (110)! Overjoyed, but not out of the woods yet as doctor is still concerned as the baby is lagging by a week to 10 days based on our best guess at conception date. Another u/s scheduled for next Tuesday to make sure everything is progressing and to see if baby is catching up! Prayers appreciated!
