Nicu nurses gift ideas?

I know we have some nurses on the board. What are some good ideas for the nurses in the Nicu? They did an excellent job taking care of dd while she was there and showing me ways to help her out, since I have to feed and burp her differently.
I didn't know if I should send food up there or something different.

  • I'm not a nurse but if you are thinking food, maybe one of those edible arrangement things? Fruit should be do-able for everybody no matter if they have allergies or lifestyle choice aversions (vegetarians, etc). Or, and maybe the actual nurses can chime in on this - still in the fruit category but a little more sumptuous - Shari's Berries? They are chocolate covered strawberry varieties (white, dark, milk) and they also carry cookies and stuff. I bought a variety for my mom when she was in the hospital but I made sure there was enough the nurses could have some... She said they were a big hit

  • We always love edible arrangements or delivered food like pizza. Not to be greedy or mean but also don't forget that there is a day and night shift so it's always nice to send something for both shifts. I work nights and a lot of times the day shift gets all the thank yous.. I think people just forget or don't realize that it doesn't get spread around.

So yes... I totally agree about the edible arrangements fruit. Also.. You have no idea how much a nice heartfelt card with your warm words will make the staff feel good. Our jobs are often so stressful and sometimes we never get to see the good stuff so the card with a nice message always brings me back to why I wanted to be a nurse even on the hard days.

Thank you for thinking of nurses- it's a hard job that we love to do but it is so appreciated when we're noticed for doing a good job!

God bless you and your new little one.

Just want to second this. I work in healthcare (not as a nurse) and it always means so much to see thank you cards from patients and relatives. It really reminds you why you do what you do.

And yes, anything edible will go down well. In my experience nurses tend to get a lot of chocolates, so I'd probably go with something different - baked goods like muffins, or something savoury like pizza would be really welcome. Plus if a ward is really busy, the nurses and doctors there may not be getting their breaks, so food gifts can be a lifesaver. I know I've had shifts where I've subsisted on nothing but cups of tea and chocolates. But it's not so much about what you give - any gesture would be really appreciated I'm sure.

Last time I got the big box of godiva and wrote a nice card for the nicu and maternity nurses.
  • Thank you cards. We post them in our break room as a brag board! It's nice to just be thanked.

For our NICU nurses I got a huge platter of cookies (chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter and white chocolate macadamia) enough for the night and day shifts. DH and I also wrote a personalized thank you card.
  • I brought a couple of bags of dove chocolates with me to give to the nurses. After an unplanned c-section we wound up staying longer and the nursing staff was amazing. Decided on our last night there to order pizza for the staff, and it seemed really appreciated. Tried to be cognizant of both day and night staff so scheduled delivery for their shift-change briefing time.
  • We sent cookie baskets from Cheryl cookies to childrens hospital as a thank you. The social worker we worked with called to tell us how much everyone liked it.
