With DS my husband worked for a company that didnt provide paternity leave (less than 50 employees) and his jerk boss refused to let him take earned vacation time. Luckily he changed jobs and will take a week off with vacation time, but again a small company so not paternity leave provided.
@peony1982, I understand your point. I was just clarifying that legally (w the other eligibilities met), a company must allow the father to take FMLA. My DH would never take the full entitlement either.

According to the federal givt's published info, That doesn't look true. Fathers are only entitled to FMLA if the mother has a serious medical condition and he needs to care for the child. From the Dept of Labor site:
"
The mother is entitled to FMLA leave for any period of incapacity due to pregnancy, for prenatal care or for her own serious health condition following the birth of a child. The husband is entitled to FMLA leave if needed to care for his pregnant spouse who is incapacitated or if needed to care for her during her prenatal care, or if needed to care for the spouse following the birth of a child if the spouse has a serious health condition. See Serious Health Condition for more information."
My husband is going to take the first week off, then take off Tuesday and Thursday the following two weeks. His office occasionally lets him work from home so I'm sure he'll do that a couple scattered days. My mom and MIL have both offered to come help too, but waiting to see if actually necessary before putting myself through extended time with my MIL
First time I had a c section and was in the hospital for 4 days. He was back at before we left the hospital. He didn't have any vacation, he worked for a crappy company. This time he'll be able to take a week.
Hubbie may only be able to take a couple of days. It's my first and I wasn't sure what the norm is so reading this made me feel a lot better. knowing other moms are in the same boat makes me feel better
Also - paid paternity leave?! I won't even get paid maternity leave ! Ha maybe I need to move countries !
None. He has about a week of paid vacation time left that he might try to use accordingly but that's it. He is the area supervisor of a oilfield company and he's in charge of the department that fixes things when they go down. He does get to come home throughout the day for a little bit when he gets done at a job site and such. He mentioned he will try to do that more when baby is here too. I try not to complain though because he is the bread winner and I'm a lucky girl.
My wife is a law student and will be writing exams when I am due. Eek! So, right after the baby is born she may not be around at all. If the baby is late she'll be on December break and she has a whole month and a bit off then.
Hoping for a week for DH, as he works for my FIL so that's flexible. The nice thing is that my mom is coming to stay with me for a week after the baby is born to help me so he may not even have to take a week off if he can't.
I'm Canadian so things are a bit different. My husband will be able to take paid time off for the birth. Then we will get him to go back to work until mid December where he will take 4 weeks of paternity leave (paid) over the holidays. He's entitled to more but he wouldn't receive his full paycheques so we won't be able to afford him taking 6 months or a year.
He would be off unpaid anyways over the holidays so we figured that we might as well schedule his leave at the same time! Depending on our financial situation at the time we might get him to take 8 weeks. We'll see.
I love living in Canada! Our situations sound very similar. It's nice for hubby to have the option of parental leave.

Law school widows are totes a thing, you have my sympathies. I planned the bulk of our wedding alone while Hubs studied for the Bar Exam.
My fiancé is going to take about a week off of work because he will have enough time through vacation and sick leave to still take the time off and get paid. I am about to stop working and he will be the sole breadwinner once the baby comes.
Re: How much time off is SO planning to take aroynd the birth?
