Tea

hey everyone
Does anyone know what the deal is with tea during pregnancy? I know to limit caffeine but what about herbal tea? I wanted to try peppermint tea to help with my morning sickness but wasn't sure if it was okay.
Thanks!

I'm not a tea drinker, but I found this article and thought it might be helpful!

  • I'm not a tea drinker either... Just thought it was hilarious that my baby brain read Tea as a girls name pronounced like Tay-a! #-o

  • Just be careful as some teas are caffeinated. You can look for pregnancy tea too. I have only seen it in one store, but I honestly haven't looked anywhere else.
  • snharring mint tea is totally fine

  • You can look up how much caffeine is in different tea. I am living off decaf tea and low caffeine tea.
  • Thanks everyone!
  • My favorite is good earth sweet and spicy. Very bold taste, but I love it. It also helps (a little) to curb my sweet tooth!
  • I've been drinking these... The vanilla comoro is blowing my mind and there's only 1 milligram of caffeine. The ginger has been great for nausea and it has no caffeine. The hot cinnamon sunset is delicious too, but it does have 40-60 mg's of caffeine. I'll drink it if I'm needing a pick-me-up. You can have up to 200 mg's a day, but I don't think I've ever exceeded 60.

  • If the herbal tea has artificial colour or flavor , you should avoid it. And take the right one only once a day. I asked this question during live chat with a dietician and this was her answer
  • I live in the UK, where tea is life, lol. A cup of Yorkshire tea has 75mg of caffeine per 8 oz, so I have 2 per day. You will be fine as long as you keep it under 200mg.

Or cut it out all together. Do what you feel is right.

  • I was just about to ask this question. I drink peppermint tea maybe once a day. It helps my stomach settle. I drink at night. I hope is not harmfull.
  • Peppermint tea is naturally caffeine-free

  • Anything caffeine free is totally fine.  I LOVE peppermint, mommy tea, and I've recently started drinking a cup of raspberry leaf tea after reading possible uterine strengthening affects.  My cousin is on her 3rd kid, first natural birth due to some heart issues, and she's been drinking 5 cups a day at 39 weeks!
  • Be very very careful with herbal tea. Especially teas labeled "pregnancy" or "mommy" tea (counterintuitive, I know!). Blended teas typically have so many ingredients in them it's almost impossible to be safe, and many herbal teas are known to make cramping worse, or even more horrifying, induce preterm contractions and even labor. Best advice, stick to teas with one or two ingredients that you've read are on the safe side, and even then, use in moderation. This link has a good list. https://www.bellybelly.com.au/pregnancy/tea-during-pregnancy-teas-to-drink-teas-to-avoid/
  • Thanks for the info!  The mommy tea I've been drinking has one ingredient per bag, but different types based on the time of pregnancy (each trimester).
  • I drink chamomile tea to help me sleep :-)
  • Green tea interferes with the body's ability to absorb folic acid, so I works stay away from that.
