Babys tongue on Ultrasound

I'm a bit of a mess. My doctor called and is arranging for an urgent ultrasound this week. On my NT ultrasound (13 weeks) they noticed the baby's tongue protruding and now need to follow up with another as I'm further along...(17 weeks). All my genetic screening came back negative but I'm still soooo worried. Just looking for some support from other mamas.

Re: Babys tongue on Ultrasound

  • I'm gonna have to ask some questions here. Is that not normal? Like, can babies not stick out their tongues? I've never heard anything like that, but I'm a first-timer so I'm genuinely curious. I hope it's nothing serious.

  • Yes they can but for some reason the doctors seem concerned by it this time. Which of course has me worried!
  • How long do you have to wait for your next ultrasound and doctor visit?
  • They told me the ultrasound will be this week - Monday at the latest. Hoping I don't have to wait the weekend.
  • I'm sorry for the stress and scary feelings! It's good they're taking the extra precautions. I hope you get some answers ASAP! Keep us posted. :)
  • Sorry you're having added stress right now!! As PPs have said: stay away from google!!! Thoughts and prayers.

That's so strange! I hope that didn't come across as rude or anything, I just hadn't heard of anything like that before!! I am sure everything will be fine, keep us posted!
  • Prayers for your baby! I've never heard of being worried for this reason. I am sure all is fine, stay away from Google!
  • No advice but my thoughts and prayers to you and baby! Keep us posted!
  • Thanks ladies, I will keep you posted!
  • Thoughts and prayers. Hopefully it's nothing and you just get to see LO again!

  • Praying for the baby! Hope everything is okay. I know it's so hard not to worry. When do you get answers?
  • I agree with PPs can you call your doctor and ask what the concern is? You had a good genetic screen so it sounds like physiological issue. Don't google and try to stay calm until you get the full picture. T&Ps for a good scan with no issues.
  • Thinking of you!!
  • Thanks, with any luck I'll have my scan tomorrow and know the results soon.

For those who think it's strange, some genetic conditions can present with macroglossia (large tongue), the one that comes to mind off the top of my head is beckwith-weidemann. That being said, at our last US baby girl had her tongue way out there and they weren't concerned. I would try not to worry and definitely stay off Google. Thoughts to you.
  • I am sending you positive vibes! Sounds like your doctor is just being very thorough. Let us know the results!
  • Good luck with your scan today. I hope it all ends up being ok and that baby just likes its tongue out.
  • Praying for you today hope everything turns out to be just fine
  • Positive thoughts your way.  I hope the doctor has some answers as to what his concerns are before the scan.  It'll be ok mama.  *hugs*

My first son had an ultrasound where one of his pictures is tongue was sticking out.  I can assure you he is a perfect 4 year old :)  Try not to worry.  I had testing done and my levels are all out of wack and I, too, have done nothing but search the net and worry endlessly.  Eating ice cream sounds like the perfect plan to me to keep your mind off things.  xoxo  Keep us posted and good luck.

  • I think it might be a soft marker for DS as well, but with all of your other testing showing no increased risk, I wouldn't be too concerned. Good luck!
  • Thinking of you today!
  • So I was hoping to get in today but I'm booked for Friday. Thanks for all the positive thoughts. This wait is so hard.

I know the wait must be incredibly difficult, but as PPs have said, just try not to stress too much.  Try not to let your mind wander and occupy your thoughts with a movie, a book, or a hobby as much as you can in the meantime.  We'll all be thinking of you and hoping for the best for you and your little one!
  • Do you have Netflix?  I recently watched Granite Flats on it and it was excellent.  Maybe a little distraction will help get you through the wait.  *hugs*

  • I'm sorry you have to wait until Friday- but at least they can get you in before the weekend. I hope your baby was just sassing the ultrasound tech by sticking his or her tongue out. Sending your creepy internet hugs!

  • Sending positive and calm vibes your way! Stay away from Dr Google and think positive! Stressing won't help you feel better, try to distract yourself and you can get through the wait!
  • I hope everything goes well and you can finally relax!
