Premature baby prediction

My mother just told me I was 6 weeks early and all my siblings were at least two or 3 weeks early! Only my youngest two siblings have any health/development issues because of this but everyone else including me were just peachy. Now I'm worried my baby will be premature too :(

Re: Premature baby prediction

  • Don't let her scare you. Talk to your doc. See what they say. Also, keep in mind-- medicine has advanced a lot since you and your sibs were born.

  • Two or three weeks early isn't technically premature. 37 weeks is considered full term (my DD was born at 37 weeks and is perfectly normal).

Also, you have a different set of genetics to your mother. Just because that happened to her doesn't mean it will happen to you. And also what @neludelu said :)
  • I not sure prematurity is generic. My son was 2 weeks early and my mom went past 40 weeks with me and all my siblings. My sister in law was convinced she's deliver early because her & her siblings were early babies and she ended up being induced at 42 weeks.

And I believe 37 weeks is considered full term so 2- 3 weeks early isn't technically premature.
  • I am one of 5 and my mom was early with all us - 2-3 weeks early with- I went into labor at 41.5 weeks and my 2 sisters at exactly 40 weeks- I wouldn't worry

  • I wouldn't worry either.  It is tempting to try to predict how your labor will go based on what happened to your mother.  However, my mother's delivery of me (her oldest) was nothing like my delivery of my first daughter.  You never know.

I think I would disagree that 2-3 weeks isn't premature though.  Although 37 weeks is considered full term, it is definitely preferable to go the full 40 weeks.  Although baby would do fine, it would probably be best for he or she to stay put for the final few weeks.  In my daughter's early doctors' appointments, I was always getting asked when she was born in comparison to her due date.

  • Oh the word garabage you hear from people when you're pregnant. People want to look wise and knowledgeable and so they say ridiculous things. My uncle looked at me with a wise expression and told me that he predicted my cousin was going to deliver 5 weeks early (she didn't thankfully). I chewed him out and told him that that is just utter nonsense. He doesn't know when, that's an awful prediction anyway, and a lot of things about due dates have changed since their generation. I'm convinced that without ultrasound dating of pregnancy, there were plenty of people that had "early babies" but really weren't because their cycles were off and the due date was too.

Thanks everyone my doctor did say I needed to relax as the baby seems perfectly heathly so I shouldn't worry. But its hard to when mothers get into your head plus I detest waiting so that's not helping. I say bring on August.
  • I don't think it's a genetic/hereditary thing.

My mom was 3 days early with me. I was 2 weeks early with my son. So I wouldn't worry. Keep that baby healthy and stress free!
  • From the very early stages of my pregnancy, my in-laws have been saying that babies on their side of the family come early. Then DH's cousin had his first child (well, his wife did) at 36 weeks, and everyone looks at me and says, "SEE?"
I want to slap every one of them.
And then the hormone rage subsides, and I sweetly say "My baby can wait as long as she likes."
  • Don't let that worry you I was born eight weeks early and I'm 30 now and there's nothing wrong with me. There are so many medical and advances now that you shouldn't have to worry. I had my first son at 37 weeks and and the only thing he had was Jaundice.
  • I'm creeping from September. I was 6 weeks early and my sister was 3. My DD was induced 2 weeks late. I was so convinced she would be early that the thought of her being late didn't cross my mind even once lol
  • This is totally off topic and I'm really sorry, but I absolutely had to share that I keep reading the title here as "premature baby ejaculations," and it throws me off guard every time I see it.
