Measly list

My SO and I find out the sex of our baby in a little over two weeks and still have very few names on our list. I know we have plenty of time but I think about it all the time and never come up with any more ideas! We prefer old fashioned names that aren't common anymore. We can't agree on any boy names so far and for girl names we think we like Cecilia and Roslyn. Roslyn comes with its' own seperate issues on spelling. I like Roslyn because it looks the way I think it should sound but believe the more tradition spelling is Rosalind and I would hate to stray away from tradition. However, my SO thinks it should be spelled Rosalyn! Which I don't love at all because it's rarely spelled that way.

What does everyone prefer between the two names and can anyone offer any insight on the spelling?

Also, would LOVE any suggestions of other names that are similar.

Side note, we both love Claire and would use that but it's one of my Aunt's name and my other Aunt doesn't get along with her and would resent me for it.

Other names I like but can't use due to various reasons:
Liam (way too popular)
Meredith
Lucy
Max
Jack

I hope I didn't overwhelm the post with too much info! Thanks everyone :)

Re: Measly list

  • I love Rosalind, but only if spelled the traditional way. As you can see from the link, Rosalind, Rosalyn, and Roslyn all have slightly different pronunciations. I think you and your SO need to really look at the differences of each variant and decide if any of them are what you want. Good luck :)

  • I would push for Rosalind. Cecilia is also lovely. You don't need to decide right now, it's okay to have a couple names and think about them.

    As for boy names. Consider

    Leon
    Cedric
    Abner
    Roland
    Thaddeus
    Maxwell
    Ignatius
    Bernard
    Lyle
    Walter
    Victor
  • I like Cecilia best. Rosalind is ok but nms.

    Other names

    Imogen
    Gemma
    Felicity
    Maxine
    Emma
    Georgina
    Lydia
    Alexia
    Francesca
    Naomi
    Harriet
    Ruth

    Boys

    Callum
    Scott
    Daniel
    William
    Hugo
    James
    Henry
    Oscar
    Luke
    Harry
    Sebastian

  • I love Cecelia! If you decide to go with the other, I prefer Roselind. It's the classiest, for some reason.

Other suggestions: Lorelei, Rosealie, Rosemary, Genevieve, Mallory
  • All of the spellings you have listed I would pronounce differently.

Roslyn I would say like rawz-lyn, though I don't know if that's the pronunciation you are going for.

As other people have said, you've got time. Maybe find out the sex first then think about it a little more
  • I like Cecelia more, although I like Celia even more.

    Other ideas:
    Camille
    Caroline
    Eliza
    Julia
    Juliet
    Lydia
    Victoria

  • Love Cecelia. I would not use the other name unless you spell it Rosalind. Roslyn looks smooshed and way less classy.
  • I think the name Rosalind Cecelia would be beautiful! As for the spelling, Rosalind beats Roslyn by 100 miles IMO. Rosalind has three syllables, but Roslyn only has two, which to my ears makes Rosalind more musical and Roslyn just harsh. Also, all the "girl names need a y in them" nonsense lately has me disliking even normal names with a y in them.

My mother's name is Rosemary :) love your suggestions!

I love Rosalind or Roselyn. I'm not a big fan of Cecelia
  • LOVE Rosalind. Rosalyn is a no go for me. My dream job would be to be the "Ys in Names" czar. Anytime a name was given with an extra y, I'd have to give approval and I'd deny it every single time. It's a huge pet peeve of mine. Rosalind just sounds so much more lovely and feminine to me!

Are there name czar positions available? I would like to put in my application.
  • Love Rosalind. I also suggest Rosalie.
