Baby kicks?

Im almost 18 weeks and wasnjustbwondering if you ladies have felt the baby yet? I'm told it begins as slight flutters. I think they say this could be anytime between 16-24 weeks but I'm just anxious for the reassurance.

Re: Baby kicks?

  • I felt my first at 17 weeks, my second not until almost 21 weeks and this one at about 14.5 weeks.  There's a wide range of normal.  I'm sure everything is ok.

  • I didn't feel with my first until around 20 weeks, and I'm not sure if I've felt this one yet...I may have last night it was very subtle though; so I'll wait to see if it happens again to decide! I think I remember it feeling like nervous butterfly's with my DD...good luck! Hope you feel your LO soon! Its so cool!
  • My first I felt faint flutters around 18 weeks and kicks around 22 weeks. This one, I started feeling tiny flutters between 16 and 17 weeks, and now at 17.4 weeks they are starting to be easier to recognize occasional little pokes. Looking forward to full out karate kicks in a month or two :-)
  • I'm 18 weeks and I've felt my LO squirming around here and there. Some days I feel it several times and others I don't feel any. Is this your first? With my first I wasn't sure for awhile if the little flutters were the baby or not. Soon there will be no doubt though as your LO keeps on growing and growing.

I think I started feeling mine on Friday (17w4d).  It definitely didn't feel like gas, and it's been happening from time to time ever since.  I wouldn't describe it as flutters, though.  I've seen others describe it as popping popcorn, and that is very much like what I've felt.
  • Im 18w1d and distinctly felt my first punch/kick while in bed last night. I agree it was more like muffled popcorn...maybe kettle corn because it was so sweet! (Sappy, I know)
  • I'm a super obsessed first time mom, and keep hoping what I'm feeling are "wiggles," but I'm only just past 14 weeks so I think I still have a ways to go. :( Plus, my stomach has been super messed up lately so I'm sure its just gas!!

But I've read that many feel movement between 16-20 weeks, so you're definitely in that window!
  • This is my third. I'm 18w2d and baby is moving enough to see/feel it on the outside of my stomach. But it was longer for my first, around 18 weeks when I felt flutters with her.
  • FTM here and I feel your anxiety! I'll be 16 weeks tomorrow and I keep thinking I feel "flutters" in the evenings when I am still... but then again I do not know what "flutters" feel like for sure. I cannot wait to be sure!! Best of luck to you... it won't be long for you now!!
  • I'm a first time mama and I felt flutters around 14 weeks. I'm 18 weeks now and I feel my baby wiggling all the time now !
Everyone is different. I'm sure you'll feel something soon :) when I first felt movement it just felt like gas. But I knew it was the baby because I didn't hear anything and I didn't have to pass gas anytime after that. Sometimes it felt like popcorn. :P
  • 18 weeks and I think it feels like being poked from the inside with a pencil eraser. Freaks DH out (the whole human inside a human thing messes with his mind. Amuses me).
  • I'm 16 weeks with my second and DH was able to feel our baby boy kicking this morning! We could also feel either his head or butt. Not sure which one it was, but could feel a hard spot at the top of my uterus. Pretty amazing!
  • FTM here.  I started feeling the flutters just a few days ago, right at the 17 week mark.

  • People will probably think I'm crazy for saying this...but I (a FTM) felt my first few flutters during week 14. I convinced myself that I must be hallucinating or that it must be gas because everything I read said that was too early. But I've continued to feel that same feeling in almost the exact same spot (a few inches below and to the right of belly button)  and now (week 17) it's stronger and more frequent. So I'm starting to believe that yes, it really was movement that I felt starting at 14 weeks. When I told my doc at 16 weeks what I was feeling, he said it sounded like baby moving to him! Maybe my having a retroverted uterus could have something to do with it? Who knows. I just get super happy every time I feel it!

I felt my first at 14 weeks too. I felt this one also at 14 weeks. It is exciting to feel the movement. It gives me the reassurance that baby is okay.
  • With my first I was feeling flutters at 14-15 weeks but I thought it was gas. It wasn't until my ultrasound at 17 ish weeks where I felt the flutters/gas and saw her kick at the same time that I realized it was actually flutters.

What's funny now though is that I'm 19 weeks 2 days and have only felt a few flutters and I'm not convinced that its actually baby. Still could be gas because of how inconsistent it is.

I had my ultrasound last week and baby was moving and kicking like crazy and I felt NOTHING. I'm thinking that maybe my placenta is in a weird place this time or something. Oh well, maybe in another week or two I'll start feeling her more!

  • FTM and felt my first little movement from the outside on Monday at 17w3d and yesterday, felt her move on the inside for the first time at 17w4d and felt her again 2 times today! I LOVE it!

This is me. I am 17w 4d and I think I started feeling the baby on Monday. It feels like flutters/gently popping popcorn. Sometimes I'm a lot more aware of it than others.

Not crazy at all. I felt my first around 14-15 weeks and also thought I was crazy. It was her though.

I started feeling this one a few days shy of 14 weeks.
  • I'm 16 weeks and was told today that I should feel baby start to boogie soon! I'm kind of excited! So there's my AW post of the day!

FTM and 18w1d and still haven't felt anything that I'm for sure of yet. I thought I felt something a few days ago but I think it was just because BF and I were talking about it. Can't wait to feel and see kicks and punches.
  • I'm 14w4d and I've felt a few flutters lately. After having my NT ultrasound this past Monday and seeing the baby move so much, I'm convinced it's actual movement and not gas.

FTM 17w5d and for about the last week and a half or so I've been feeling what must be my little bean.  Around 16 weeks I was at lunch with a friend and I stopped mid conversation because for about a minute straight, every 5 seconds, I felt a little "pop" in the same spot.  I wasn't sure what to think of it then, but yesterday I was sitting at my desk at work after lunch and i felt two similar, but much more evident, "pops" in the same spot and then it felt like my little one did a full blown somersault in there haha I was smiling from ear to ear
    :D
  • I'll be 19 weeks Sunday and nothing :( Butt the doc says that's normal and ok so I'm just sitting here waiting impatiently! :)
  • I'll be 16 weeks tomorrow and I have felt movement here and there almost everyday starting around 15 weeks. At first I didn't think it was the baby because it was so sudden and when I would concentrate on it it would stop. It feels to me like someone lightly tapping their finger on the inside of my uterus just below my belly button. Yesterday when I sneezed it felt like a straight up light kick, I think I scared our LO. My doctor told me that if it is strong enough to wonder if it was the baby then it probably was.

It makes me so happy that people are describing it as popcorn!  Now I know that was the baby!  I'm 18 weeks, 1 day.  FTM.. very exciting! :)

FTM too, I've felt some movement hear and there, but it feel like a poke or kick more than just a flutter! Anyone else feel this way? I know it's not gas... Cause I definitely know what that feels like.... :)) but I haven't had any muscle twitches in my abdomen at all when it happens, every time it happens I'm always like "What was THAT?!" It's a pretty interesting feeling. Hoping I'm not just delusional haha
  • 16 weeks and little kicks ;;)
  • 18w2d and I've noticed a lot of stuff today, swooshing, tickling and a little poke.
  • Does it feel like muscle twitches? I had a huge twitch the other day in my abdomen and it startled me! It was like three really quick, insane twitches. Hoping its baby but as a FTM I have no clue what to think!
  • I felt for sure kick at 18 weeks with my first, 14.5 weeks with this one. This baby is a little ninja. :)
  • For a FTM it can be 20+ weeks before you start to feel your baby for the first time. I have been feeling this lo since about 16 weeks, maybe even a couple of days before that. I am 18 weeks now and pretty much feel the baby everyday now at certain times of the day, they are not by any means strong, but this isn't my first so I know what to look for. Be patient, you'll feel your lo moving around in there soon.

  • Just to say it can feel totally different for everyone. The midwives and lots of medical people describe the early movement as flutters, but with all 3 of mine I've never felt a "flutter". Mine start off like popcorn (so it can be easily confused with gas!) and floppy type movements... As if I've got a big fish in there rolling around.
  • I feel like I know where the baby is in general rather than little pokes or kicks. Does anyone else feel some pressure in one place more than another at certain times? Is it the baby changing positions?
  • So when the flutters or "popcorn" feelings began, did you all notice it more internally, or did you have your hand on your belly? I am only 14-15 weeks along and haven't felt any internal movement, but do feel something with my hand. Just curious as to how you all felt it first :)
  • I am mostly a lurker (Due Oct 30th so in between Oct and Nov) and just hit 19 weeks yesterday, I've been feeling baby for almost a week now. For me I never felt "flutters", it was more like muscle twitches or pops. So I agree that it may feel different for everyone. The first thing I felt was two or three pops in a row in the same spot, and then nothing else for another day or so but it's started to get more consistent.

@Stephanieshort2 for me I feel it better if I have my hand pressed against my lower abdomen, but sometimes I feel it without that. I don't know if it helps to be pushing in so the feeling is stronger, or if I'm squishing the baby so they move more, or what! But when I feel it with my hand I definitely feel it from the inside, too.

Every time I feel movement I get a huge smile on my face, it feels so good to know baby is moving around in there, definitely reassuring.

No kicks or flutters yet but the past 2 nights when I'm laying down and my stomach is otherwise empty I do feel like the head is over on the left side. Like its harder and sticks out there:)
  • When I first felt baby move yesterday I am 17 weeks an I felt it with my hand from the outside. My friend said that sounds weird because usually only feel from inside at this stage, but I know I felt the "pops" with my hands.

It's internal. You wouldn't be able to feel the baby from the outside until at the earliest 20w, but likely not until your 3rd trimester. Unless you have an anterior placenta, then it's possible to feel externally earlier, but I don't think as early as you are. You are probably feeling muscle twitches.
