Anyone out there eat off-limit foods?

I passed by an Arby's and immediately had to stop for a roast turkey & swiss market fresh sandwich. I just finished half of the sandwich when I realized turkey is probably off limits! Lo and behold I just scared the crap out of myself by googling the risks :(( Anyone else ear turkey or something else you're not supposed to?

I'm sure it'll be fine. I eat deli meat all the time. They say you're supposed to heat it but I don't myself.
  • I eat a deli meat chicken sandwich occasionally. I've also had sushi and rare steak a couple times but baby is growing perfectly :)
  • The ultimate cheeseburger from jack n the box came out the year my mom was pregnant with me and that's all she ever ate lol! And I came out healthy :)
  • Tbh I forgot we aren't supposed to have deli meats. I have not abstained at all.

  • At a work training last week, lunch was provided - it was a choice of ham or turkey sandwich from Jason's Deli. I went ahead and ate it, and it was super yummy bc it was on a croissant roll, but I was a little annoyed they didn't have vegetarian offerings, not just for me but anyone else! I'll be totally honest - it was more because I don't particularly care for lunch meat than I "can't have it" - I've used my pregnancy to dictate where we eat on more than one occasion, haha! ;) But I've also indulged in bleu cheese crumbles, Mountain Dew, and who knows what else I'm not "supposed" to. I wouldn't worry too much about a little Arby's. :)

  • Girl i want cheese dip so bad! You are fine turkey wont kill ya!
  • I refuse to give up rare steak or over easy eggs. I also have the occasional cup of coffee and (very occasional) sip of wine/beer. I know a lot of people that have had wine while pregnant, but the only thing I've had more than a sip or two of is the alcohol removed type. I just tried the sparkling Fre and had a couple other people try it, we all agreed it was pretty good :)
  • Yeah I still eat deli meats and stuff. There are risks with everything. I'm not going to stress myself out or deprive myself.

  • Yep I eat turkey sandwiches quite often. I also eat sushi and most anything I want in small amounts. I definitely wouldn't stress yourself out about it and stay away from Google! lol :)

  • I eat turkey lunchmeat 2-3 times a week and one of my cravings is the cold cut combo from Subway so I treat myself to that every once in a while. I think you'll be ok :) The only thing I've truly given up is alcohol and I've even had a couple sips of that to taste test since summertime is when all the yummy, new drinks come out.
  • I can't not drink coke. I asked my OB if that makes me a terrible pregnant person and he laughed and said I was fine, lol. I eat the blackened turkey and Gouda from boars head all the time, and baby is growing like a weed :) I think a lot of the "restrictions" we are told about/read about come from something only happening once or a handful of times, so they decide it isn't good for anyone. And to echo a pp- seems like the biggest threat so far has been that ice cream recall, and that certainly wasn't on any of our do-not-eat lists!
  • Turkey sandwiches are my craving. I eat them several times a week and did with my first pregnancy too. In the U.S. We have such high food standards that I'm not terribly worried about it.
  • Wait, deli meats are off limits? Well, guess I'm in the bad mommy group for this one, because I eat turkey sandwiches like they're the last thing on earth. When I had morning sickness, and turkey sub from subway was the only thing I could keep down.
  • I've had sushi, tuna, coffee, turkey, goat cheese, hot dogs. I feel like some of the new rules about what we can and cant eat are a bit silly. Dont eat turkey from a sketchy looking place sure.. but  really most people eat turkey all the time without getting ill. Some people eat other things not on any no-eat list and do get ill. Like bluebell ice cream.
  • I've had almost everything on the "no-no" list atleast google's no-no list. My doctor is very relaxed and when I asked about lunch meat I was told it was fine, he also has no problem with me eating sushi as long as its from a reputable place and I don't over-indulge. The only thing I really changed was that I quit smoking and I've only had a sip or two of wine since finding out. Other then that I'm a big fan of the "everything in moderation rule".

  • The only thing I choose to stay away from is raw fish and alcohol. I limit my caffeine but drink a coffee daily.

I didn't even know hotdogs were a "no no"... sigh. There's too many random things to even keep up with lol. I also eat deli meat in moderation as well was caffeine, etc. Vanilla coke is like my #1 pregnancy craving lol.
  • I have eaten quite a few turkey sandwhiches. And last night I went for sushi! I made sure not to order anything raw but I did have one piece of my husband's sashimi, I couldn't resist. The risks of food poisoning are low enough for me to be comfortable. I do make sure I limit how often I eat deli meats though because of the nitrites. But it ain't stoppin me.
  • WTF? I'm not supposed to eat hot dogs either? LoL That was my dinner last night! And I can't pass a Wienerschnitzel without getting myself a chili dog or 2 LOL. Oh well, I give up. I'll eat whatever this little guy wants me to eat....It's HIS fault! :D
  • I continue to eat but limit to once a week tuna sandwiches, turkey sandwiches boreshead turkey only and coffee is always on the daily.

With the weather getting hot I've been craving turkey sandwiches. My doc said as long as it's fresh, not the pre packaged kind and preferably boars head. I'm pretty sure I'll be stopping by the store after work tomorrow. He also said hot dogs are fine basically as long as it's heated up enough so not from a ball game or a gas station. I'm actually making chili cheese dogs for dinner because I've been craving hot dogs!
  • I've had soft cheeses, charcuterie, sushi, and rare steak. I won't eat regular lunch meat, or hummus anymore.
  • my entire pregnancy I've eaten the following foods once: few bites high end salami, a few bites of swordfish, few bites of top of the line brie, one hand roll sushi, half roasted turkey sandwich, tequila lime chicken but i'm sure all the tequila cooked off.. I don't feel guilty at all.
I also have my 150 mg caffeine/day and it makes my morning.

  • I drink a cup of coffee a day. I also eat tuna sandwiches. 50 years ago women were told by the doctors that smoking while pregnant is OK, I'd say if they got away with that why feel guilty about cold cuts!?
  • I want bologna all the time. Haha & hot dogs! But I always get the all beef kinds, so I feel less bad. I've slipped & had other lunch meats a few times. I figured women have had healthy babies long before these restrictions were in place. I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't perfect though!!
  • Turkey. Hot dogs. Soft cheese. Blue Bell. Rare steak. Over easy eggs. Hummus. Red wine. Coffee.

Perfectly healthy Wee one tracking ahead of her date. She should have a solid immune system upon arrival :-)
  • I don't get how hummus is bad? I read that hummus is good for you because it's made out of chickpeas, which are super high in protein.
I've been eating hummus with brown rice almost everyday!
  • @rholbrook7 there was just a scare with Sabra hummus back in our early pregnancy days. I think that's the reason for a couple of people mentioning hummus.
I break the rules often too. Moderation is important. I haven't had much alcohol but I'm not against it- just don't crave it. Coffee is probably my worst thing. But I really don't like to function without it.
  • I got curious about Listeria early on (I love my hoagies) - how was it that this thing is so evil and nobody I knew, except the recent mothers, had ever heard of it? So I looked up the CDC's numbers that included the deaths of unborn children.

Straight numbers, you are twice as likely to be killed by lightning. You are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than Listeria. Most of the Listeria deaths were elderly, most were from eating soft cheese, and most of those were a specific type of Mexican cheese. And all of those numbers were so small as to be statistically irrelevant.

Since we got pregnant the outbreaks have been in ice cream, a brand of frozen food, and hummus- no no-no foods and the frozen meals had to be heated thoroughly to be edible.

I did no lunch meat until I saw all that, and when I started again and someone asked why I have them that information and said I'd expect to lose the baby if I were hit by lightning.

DH (he's DH now!) is very protective, though, so I still avoid soft cheee, sushi, alcohol, and coffee only once a day so it looks like I'm being careful, but I did say to him recently that I felt like these food restrictions are kind of ridiculous so maybe I'll get to loosen up even more. Like we're not supposed to eat uncooked vegetables? Come on.

A PP said something like it happened to someone once and now everybody's worried. Like the crib bumpers, these things are so rare they're basically freak accidents.

We're too hard on ourselves, and everyone else is too hard on us.
  • About listeria - my sister was born with bacterial meningitis (30 years ago) because my mom drank milk that was pasteurized and there were 14 cases of listeria. Some of the babies died unfortunately. When it happens, it's bad. But it's so rare, and in the case it was still pasteurized milk. You just can't hide from everything. As others have said it is important with whatever you eat to check dates, ask if you have to and eat from a place you trust. Don't limit everything. The baby does build tastes in the womb by what you eat. It's important to eat a variety of foods.

  • Don't worry too much :) I'm vegetarian so I haven't eaten deli meat, but I certainly have eaten plenty of soft cheeses. We can't control everything, either before birth or after.
  • Anything in moderation I say. Like pp said, when our parents were having us, they didn't have all this info & we're all ok :-)
  • Is it bad that all this thread has done is make me want Subway? ;) I've had sushi, Coke, some coffee (my coffee craving has all but disappeared now that I'm pregnant), rareish meat, and lots of fresh fruit and veggies. I was a total freak in my first trimester about things..I even once threw away a brand new bottle of water that I just bought by couldn't quite remembering opening lol..but as I get farther into this pregnancy, I'm feeling more comfortable. I love and live by the everything in moderation rule!
