Special Needs

Another Lurker Here......

Just want you ladies to know how much I admire your strength and courage. I know how hard it is to feel helpless, when it comes to your child. My story started out like some of yours. I had a 2 year old non-verbal child who was prone to tantrums. I had EI come out to evaluate. I was referred to a develpmental ped at first. No diagnosis. Then a neuorologist. Lots of tests, genetic, eeg, etc. Nothing....! Then a psyciatrist...still nothing.I was told she coulb be Autistic, Apraxic, have ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder, Anxiety disorder, you name it , she could have it! I was angry, frustrated, heartbroken.  I finally got an SLP to give me an Apraxia diagnosis to get speech and special ed in my home. My now 4 year old daughter attends a theraputic pre-school and receives group speech 2x weekly and I pay for private speech 1x a week with a wonderful therapist. She was just re-evaluated and is age appropriate in all of her testing...Speech, Ed, Social /Emotional, Psycological. She will be de-classified when her IEP is up in June. She is doing great, talks up a storm, and is the happiest little girl. She will attend regular kindergarten in the fall.  Even though her apraxia dx was inaccurate, I did learn alot about it and would love to help anyone who needs.I guess what I am trying to say is a diagnosis means nothing. I just did what I needed to do to help my child, and the dx was secondary. My story is one of confusion and mis-diagnosis, so I don't know if I could be of help to anyone, but If I can, please let me know. If it's okay, I'd like to keep up on your stories. I pray for all of you everyday.

  • Auntie---Thank you for your kind words. If anything, my girl is a testament to the power of Early Intervention. If I had waited like many people told me to, including her regular ped, who knows where we would be now.

  • I would love to hear more about what you have gone thru with your daughter.  My son also has tantrums and I spend a large part of the day just rubbing his back and face to calm him down but I never put it together with his speech delay.  I just thought it was a personality thing and some people are moodier than others.  When I read this post I felt like you may have some info that I could use to help me on my search..
