The risk of infection does not go up just because she is pregnant.  Its always the same, you run the same risk with everything.  Getting a tattoo is much safer than doing a line or using a needle.  There are much more harmful things that she could be doing.

Good point...smoking crack is so much more dangerous than smoking pot...so I am just going to limit myself to pot while i am pg. Sorry, I just can't get behind your ass backwards logic. Of course there are more dangerous things she could be doing, like sky diving, but that doe snot mean her getting  a tat was good, smart or even remotely reasonable, especially since we have no choice but to question to quality of where her tat was done, and by whom.

  • Oh I know that, Im just arguing that can does not mean will.  Some people seem to have forgotten that.  PMJ, you know well enough that I completely agree with you.  Your the only one who has provided enough knowlege and common sense to argue that side.  It turned into a very intresting debate.
  • No I said that it was a completely stupid idea and most would not do it.  I am also stating that there is worse things that she could be doing which are proven to harm the baby every time.
  • Way worse than a tattoo Menz.

Do you have an idea what caffeine can do to a baby?

true that.  very interesting indeed.  and the OP is stoopid.

  • That has to be a henna (sp check) tattoo--not the real thing!?! I'm not all marked up--but if you just got it wouldn't you be a little red-scabby-bloody on wrist of all places?

The ink may not go through the bloodstream but an infection would. Thats why my doctor said for me not to get my tattoo recolored during pg. He also explained that a pregnant womans immune system is not as strong as a non pregnant womans immune system may be due to the fact that she is carrying a child and baby is taking things away from mom. This would in fact raise the risk of an infection for a pregnant woman. Something that would maybe not harm her at all before could harm her now. If it is a real tattoo and lets just say she doesnt clean it or her skin doesnt take good to it or oh i dont know.. maybe the tattoo artist was just completely disgusting then she could easily get an infection or something else for that matter and it could harm her baby..

And I agree with everyone else.. any reputable tattoo place would not tattoo a pregnant woman, they could easily have a lawsuit against them from someone as dumb as the OP for getting a tattoo during pregnancy and they could claim that the tattoo place did not warn them. I dont think any place of business is going to be that ignorant. I have 4 tattoos and piercings in my ears, I've had to sign papers for each and every one saying that I was not pregnant and I had been told the risks of tattoos and piercings for if I was pregnant. Unless she just straight up lied about being pregnant when getting the "tattoo" I don't believe any REAL tattoo place would have tattooed her. What may happen else where is totally different.

yes.. every tattoo gets scabby, however.. when I took pics of mine you couldnt ever see the scabby part but you could definitely see the redness from my skin being welped up. You could also see how it was greasy looking from the tattoo goo they put on it.

  • Dumb! Very selfish!
  • If she really wanted to be sue-happy she could sue for them not giving her a tat.  She could call discrimination and blah blah blah.  Tons of what-ifs but all that remains is that it is a stupid idea and we all hope that nothing happens to that little baby she is carrying.
  • This is just so sad. I hope the baby will be ok.  OP - pick up some reading material to prevent any harm to your baby.  "what to expect when your expecting" would probably help.   I don't know how you thought this was a good idea but check with your doctor or trusted friends before you do anything that could be risky.

No, she couldn't, not successfully anyway.  Tattoo parlors have the right to refuse service to people who are not healthy enough to receive a tattoo - which includes pregnant women, people with active infections and people prone to scarring.

They are also businesses, usually privately owned, which in itself carries right to refuse service.

You just keep repeating stuff that makes me shake my head.  The bottom line is the OP was stupid for not checking that out and for not finding a reputable shop.  Because a reputable shop would not tattoo a pregnant woman, period.  Consent gets signed before anything else happens.  Period.  If they are not going over consent and making sure it's understood, it is not a reputable shop.

  • I have two tattoos and neither looked red or scabby the day I got them. they scabbed over a few days later, but not right away. I honestly don't remember if they asked me if I was PG or not.?

The op should have asked her doctor. ?

  • Is this the same moron that thought it ws OK to smoke weed while pg????

I swear some people should not procreate!!!!

I think it is highly inappropriate to joke about hepatitis.  Completely uncalled for.

you have to get thicker skin if you plan on graduating to the 2nd tri boards. Its highly inappropriate to get a tattoo while preg-so try making that your focus!

I've literally only been on this site not even 24 hrs and this is one of the most ridiculous things i've ever seen... and I'm not talking about the girl getting the tattoo - i'm talking about the responses she's getting from all of the know-it-alls calling her names and telling her she's a moron.

How about letting her know in a NICE way that getting a tattoo is not a wise decision at this point in her life, and giving her valid reasons as to why, as opposed to jumping all over her, calling her names and being just plain obnoxious?

If she did the post to try and rile up a few people, she sure succeeded! But if she did the post as an innocent gesture to show off what she happens to be proud of, well then maybe all of you who claim to be all the wiser should act that way instead of like a bunch of catty, snobby brats.

    newb alert!!!!

in case you haven't noticed thats how the boards usually are on here...whether you like it or not... I've read a lot more rude replies

Ok... Now I am freaking out!  What should I do?  Should I call my doctor?!

Definitely give your Doc a call...who know's maybe they'll want you in to get blood taken sooner than your appt that's in 2 weeks.  The doctor's office is prob going to give you crap about it as you have today on this board.

Do get a good book and start reading...the first chapters give you the dos and don'ts about being PG.  i.e.: Wearing gloves if gardening, no cold cuts, no tatoos

  • Everyone is assuming that she really got it done...maybe she's just trying to get a rise out of so many people.
  • I don't have words for this. Firstly, no she should not have gotten a tattoo. But clearly she is not the most well informed mother on this board. I was actually surprised at that things that I shouldn't eat, or at least cut back on, when I started reading my books. Instead of just bashing her decision, we should be helping her find the right resources so as to not put her child at risk again.

It's good do the research before you get the procedures done, though. Call you doctor, and go from there. Hopefully it was a clean place and you'll have no complications. I would hate for anything to happen to a child, any child, due to sheer ignorance.

    This is from:

    https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/tatoos.htm

"The main concern with getting a tattoo during pregnancy is the risk of contracting an infection, such as Hepatitis B and HIV. Although the risk is small, it is recommended that you wait to get a tattoo until after your baby is born.

You will be very interested to know that little information is available about the safety of skin dyes used for tattooing during pregnancy. It is possible that the chemicals in the dye may affect the development of the baby during the first 12 weeks, but the risks are unknown, as are any effects on the baby during the remainder of the pregnancy.

Some women may have also heard that if they have a tattoo on their back, then they will be unable to get an epidural. Very few studies have been done on the risks that could exist for women who have back tattoos and receive an epidural. So far none of these studies have conclusively found any data that shows that there are risks, so most anesthesiologists have no problem giving an epidural to a woman with a back tattoo. If you want an epidural and have a tattoo on your back, it still would be best to contact the hospital and find out the policy in regard to tattoos and epidurals.

The risk of contracting an infection is small, but you could pass the infection to your baby if you are breastfeeding. Ultimately it's your decision, but you may want to wait until you are not breastfeeding to get a new tattoo"

  • As someone who has an entire sleeve tattoo on my right arm and my entire lower back tattooed and my left wrist and bicep tattoo'd I can appreciate a well done tattoo. However it is so stupid for you to get a tattoo while you are pregnant. I had an appointment for a touch up on my sleeve but I cancelled it as soon as I found out I was pregnant. You are taking resorces away from your growing baby. When you get at tattoo you take a hit to your imune system, which is already low. You are putting your baby at risk for infection (not from hepetitis and aids if you went to a decent shop) but other more common infections, the flu, strep throat, staff infection. So take care of this one. Don't be and idot and go in a hot tub, keep it clean and don't get any more tattoos for the sake of your baby.

Ummm... You called her stupid, yet can't seem to understand that "amune" isn't a word.  I believe you're trying to say "immune" system. Thanks so much for playing.

  • Has anyone here ever got a tattoo?

It's either fake or henna. If she just had it done it would be bright red, inflamed and puffy.

     MUD.

  • Your kidding....right?
