Separation during sleep

my LO is 10 weeks today and he usually falls asleep with me nursing or listen to classical music or reading to him with him in my arms. I've now found that about 10 mins after he shuts his eyes and is sleeping he wakes with my such a sad face and tears scared that he's alone but if I'm holding him he doesn't continue to cry and falls back asleep. I'm at a crossroads at him being to dependent upon me and then also sad because he gets scared and doesn't want to be alone.. Anyone else having this happen? I should mention about 30 mins after waking worried I then put him in his bassinet after I get him to fall asleep for the second time and he will sleep for 3+ hours:)

Re: Separation during sleep

  • My daughter does this occasionally, but never during the night, and it only seems to be when she's being held during the day. They do say babies can have bad dreams, so that's what I've always treated it as, and the need for a cuddle the same as any child who has a bad dream and just wants a cuddle from her mummy to make her feel better again.

  • My LO also has "night terrors" (they are actually confusion all episodes of you look them up since night terrors are much worse). Basically it is her brain deciding whether to continue sleeping or wake up. Usually she will cry whether I'm holding her or not, and will take a minute to calm down whether I try to help or not. I usually will just let her cry for a moment before going to get her. If it was a true concern and not a night terror, she would continue crying. It scared me at first, though, because she seemed so sad and upset! But then was immediately back to sleep.
  • I just read something about the t shirt trick on another board. Try leaving a t shirt you wore the night before in the crib with your LO. They can smell you and might be more comforted :)
  • I'm having a similar problem with my little guy. He has no problem going down at night but during the day he will only nap if he's being held or worn. When he is put down for a nap he either cries like he's been abandoned or will actively coo and "play" instead of sleep. I don't mind letting him nap in my arms or in the carrier but I will have to go back to work soon.
