Baby Names

Stuck between two girl names

We're leaning toward either Chloe or Elodie.

Chloe is the one that I think I prefer, but I'm a bit worried it may be too popular. Was #18 in 2014 and #14 in 2013.

Elodie is growing on me, and I like the nickname Elly, but I wonder if people would pronounce it oddly or always call her Melody. Thoughts?

I prefer Chloe out of the two.
  • Chloe. I always liked that name.

  • I like both. I don't think Elodie is too difficult of a name to pronounce.
  • If you are going with the nn Elly then I vote Chloe. Everyone and their neighbor is using any name they can think of to use Elly right now. Elizabeth, Eleanor, Elliot(cringe), Eliza, Penelope and now Elodie are all names this week I have heard with the nn Elly/Ellie as being the reason they are using the name.

  • Chloe > Elodie

    Have you considered Ellory?

True. I'm already worried about picking an overly popular name, and Elly is way up there.
  • Are you open to suggestions or have other names you like? I just listed a few random uncommon names and rankings on the Henley thread but I'm sure we could give you some suggestions if your not committed to these two only.

  • Not committed yet. Chloe is stuck in my brain, but we just found out the sex for sure yesterday, so we're compiling lists. I'll check out that thread and would love suggestions!

My husband things it would be nice to go with an E or L name, because those are the beginning of our first names, but not a requirement by any means.
  • Lucia
    Livia
Lucille (a little popular but it's classic)
    Laura
    Luna
    Lenora
    Lynette
    Linnea
    Lorraine
    Lyra

    Elin
    Eileen
    Edna
    Eden
    Esme
    Eliza
Elizabeth while it's pretty classic there are a ton of spunky nn, Bitsy, Betsy, Betty, Libby
    Elena
    Erika/Ericka
    Esmeralda
    Estelle or Estella
    Etta
    Evangeline
    Eva

  • I LOVE Elodie.

  • I love Chloe and wish it wasn't so popular. I'd definitely pick it over Elodie. Elodie is a nice name, but like pp I'm so over Ellie.
  • I like Elodie better, but hate the nickname Ellie. I also hate lots of nicknames in general because I mostly find them pointless.

Love Elodie. It sounds french; it is different but familiar.
  • Can't stand Chloe. I've heard of more people lately using the name Elodie so of the trend continues upward, more people will know how to pronounce it correctly.
  • Love Chloe more than Elodie. Elodie doesn't feel complete.

I say keep looking at different names. Elodie is becoming popular and the nickname Ellie is grossly popular (as pp have mentioned). I cannot get on board with the name Chloe because I just can't stand it. I've never liked it and always cringed when hearing it. For some reason it's always at the top of men's favorite names lists... like it's their fantasy girl name. Ick.

Moving on.... here are a few suggestions
    Lydia
    Laurel
    Louella
    Lola
    Lila

    Elise (short form of Elizabeth)
    Ellen
    Elaine
Emma (if popularity doesn't bother you, this is a classic choice)
Emmy (diminutive of Emma or Emily)
    Erin

Also love previously suggested: Esme, Erica, and Eliza

I actually prefer Elodie. Especially if you or your husband is french. Elodie is a legitimate name in French.

So is Chloe, FYI. But Chloe is overused.
  • Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I love Lucia, but my good friend's daughter is a Lucia, so that's out. Also love Emma, but it's too popular for me. Trying to avoid the top 10 at least.

    Other contenders:
    Lilliana
    Lydia
    Ellamae
Abigail (though Abby is very close to my SIL's name, and it's #8 from last year)

Still loving Elodie and Chloe. We do both have French ancestry, and I'm a French teacher, so both are fitting for us. Will keep checking out the suggestions and threads here.

Love Lilliana...that would definitely be my first choice over everything

If French names are preferred then may I suggest you peruse this website, BTN-French. Here are a few of my favorite, not so popular, French names for girls...

    Marie or Margot
    Renee
    Aimee
    Amelie
    Celeste or Celine
    Claire
    Colette
    Elise or Eloise

Honestly, you can do so much better than Chloe or Elodie. Good luck :)

    Elodie!!! Times a billion.
  • While I like Elodie, she will have a lifetime of "I'm Elodie"
    "Melody?"
    "No, Elodie"

My friend Alana always had people thinking her name was Malana for the same reason.
  • New top contender:
    Coralie Ruth
    Middle name after grandma.

    Thoughts?
