Swaddle/RNP transition

has anyone transitioned their LO from sleeping swaddled in a rock and play to the crib without swaddling? I don't even know where to begin! He's 10 weeks old.

Re: Swaddle/RNP transition

  • I haven't yet, but know I'll need to soon.  My 2 year old is still using his crib as a toddler bed right now though, so I need to get through that transition to a 'big boy bed' first.  With my 2 year old I transitioned from the rock & play to the pack & play first in our room.  Ours had a raised bed that sat low enough that it was like a crib.  This gave him a little more room to move around, but still kept him close by for feedings.  I kept swaddling until at least 3-4 months though.  He found comfort in the swaddle & eventually had to wean himself off of it when he outgrew the Halo sacks & the blankets I used.

  • I never used the RNP, but we transitioned from swaddling basically in one night. My LO never liked her arms swaddled anyway, but I started putting her down for naps without any swaddling and then put her down one night after we were out late and she went from car seat to crib without being swaddled. I haven't swaddled her since! Someone mentioned a sleep sack with zippers that helps the transition on another post. That might be helpful.
  • Thanks ladies! We have a pack n play in our room now but haven't used it. I'm thinking we will transition to that first and then later work on the swaddling. Since the rock n play obviously has a rocking feature... Do you all typically rock your baby to sleep and then put them down?
  • My son always fought to break his arms free from the swaddle. I have found it helpful to swaddle with his arms out. It still provides him with security and eliminates some of the startle reflex, but gives him the use of his arms to self-soothe, which becomes increasingly important as they get older.

I have this swaddle! It's called Love to Dream. It is absolutely amazing! My LO is an escape artist, and strong. She could break out of swaddles that even had Velcro, because she loves to sleep with her hands up. This swaddle has her hands up, bit retrained so she feels secure. And when she is ready to transition, the 'wings' zip off and it becomes a sleep sack. Genius!

  • Ditto on the Love to dream- awesome! Allows LO to have fists in mouth and hands above his head without waking himself up with flailing arms- the one with the zippered arms is the Love to Dream 50/50. Worth every penny. I've also had a friend tell me about the Merlin suit- she swears by it- I might try it if LO needs something before he is completely arms free
  • I had no problem transitions little one from RNP to crib... However, my pediatrician says because we let her sleep in the RNP for so long (5 weeks) she has a slight malformation of her head... We have to keep her out of swings or RNP... He said no more than 20minutes a day! I'm totally worried my baby is going to end up in a helmet from the darn thing. So transition soon so you don't have any of these little issues!
