Weekly Check-In 5/24

How was your week?

QOTW: What BBQ foods do you like? Doing anything special this weekend?

I missed the last check in. My friend came to visit and it was a very strange visit. Her behavior was odd and she didn't seem like she ever really had a good time. She's on meds for bipolar so I think that had something to do with it, but it just seemed like she was not able to find any joy in anything and it makes me really sad. She is no longer the person I used to know.

Aside from that, I have had a horrible cycle and I started birth control pills almost a week ago. So far it sucks. I hope I will adjust quickly.

QOTW: I love grilled burgers with pepper jack cheese. Potato salad. Brats. Corn on the cob. Yum. My h had to work all weekend but he's off tomorrow. Not sure what we'll do.
Me:41, DH:41 Positive for MTHFR mutations- one copy C677T, one copy A1298C. One daughter born on Thanksgiving in 2013. Six losses.

  • This is getting sad...I barely remember what I did this past week. I remember going to Target and Kohls one day. I think all was fine. LOL.

As for BBQ...ribs. Yum. I love dry rub, but will take any kind. I miss living in Memphis. They had the best bbq restaurants.

  • My week was kinda draining. DS is learning to use his hands and it's stressing him out. He's needed to be walked in a carrier for a couple of hours each day. I think he's coming out the other side now.

I'm trying to see my days and weeks in terms of parenting achievements as opposed to all the things I didn't get done because of DS's demands. I certainly feel happier that way!

QOTW: Price no object, I'd go with cowboy steak aka prime rib with some horseradish. I also like a good burger and potato salad.

Just catching my breath this weekend. DH may work tomorrow. Houston's having some crappy weather anyway. We had a tornado about 7 miles from our house today.

    RIP John Nash
  • Several things...
    1. We're staying in NC, MH accepted the job in town. Yay! Good pay and signing bonus. Hope I survive the first few months when he'll be traveling lots and learning the new gig.
    2. On Mon morning DD1 woke up covered in a horrible rash, looked like a cross betw hand foot and mouth and the 5th disease. Docs had no idea what it was. She wasn't uncomfy just itchy. But looked like a 3rd degree burn victim. Her face looked scary. It's gone down a lot but she still had brown patches on her face where the rash was. Hope her poor skin gets back to normal soon.
    3. Several of her molluscums on her legs are flaring up and they're painful when that happens so taking care of them is a pain. I worry she'll end up with a bunch of scars bc she won't let me handle them... Ughh i literally have to sit in her and pin her down to change her band aids. Between her rash, molluscums and bug bites she looks like a plague victim. Poor kid.
    3. DD2 developed some red spot on the back of her head so we had to take the helmet off for the past 4 days. Man what an ordeal with that. But this aside, she is turning into such a sweet sweet baby! Gone is the screaming monster of the earlier months!
    4. DD2 has started saying 'mama' and says it ALL THE TIME now!! I love it! DD1 was all 'dada' and didn't start consistently saying 'mama' till after she was 1, so I am eating it all up! I keep joking that C is my favorite child haha..

BBQ: do you mean 'grilled/cookout food' or actual BBQ? Because here in the south BBQ is meat with sauce, not like 'le's have a barbecue' meaning let's cook out. I LOVE pulled pork with Carolina sauce (vinnegar based). For our anniversary last month we went to a new BBQ reataurant in town, an upscale BBQ place, which kind of sounds like an oxymoron, but it really is an upscale BBQ place, and we had some aamazing beed brisket there.
  • My week was pretty good. I had a clear calendar (first time for my entire maternity leave) and just took it easy. I had professional cleaners come out too, so I got to relax in a clean house for the first time since kids. we also had a family outing day on Saturday which was great.

My favorite bbq? Well, I'm originally from Kansas City. I love all bbq, but only if done well. it's a high standard to meet. Plans this weekend? DH, from New England, says he's prepping ribs for KC style bbq. We'll see..... we were going to go to the zoo today but jts raining. Plus DS woke up at 5:15, so mommy and daddy really aren't feeling up to the zoo crowds today.

  • Oh dear that sounds terrible @harmonicbabe26 with your DD1. Hope it gets better soon.

I meant to say BBQ or grill. I blame sleep deprivation.
  • This was a crazy week, my mom is back in the hospital for 3rd time in several months with complications/side effects from her liver disease, she's been there ~10 days, they keep finding new things just as they're about to send her home. :( ... My mom 'takes care' of my grandma, who lives with her and has gotten so bad off she can't live by herself (she was in assisted living last year but my mom thought she was well enough to take care of the both of them, an apartment and a dog - uh, no.), so my brother took off the time to help out and now he's lost his job. My mom is annoyed I can't visit much because I can't/don't want to bring baby to the hospital. It's all a big mess and I'm trying to help out and take care of a 10 week old. It's not really happening, I'm tired! Oh well.

Sebastian has been smiling so much and suddenly cooing a lot, that brings me so much joy! I can't help but take 20+ pix of him with my phone of him everyday!

Our holiday weekend where we were hoping to get some stuff done around the house and some relaxation didn't really happen... Guess there's always next weekend...

I love burgers with sharp white cheddar! Mmmm!

  • Hello old friends! Mind if I pull up a chair?

@mdogan29 so sorry to hear about your mom being back in the hospital. I really hope she turns a corner soon. I think you're doing the right thing keeping Seb away from the hospital though...

Sounds like everyone had a busy week!  Ours sure flew by -- baby was born late Monday night (today is Day 9). As you can imagine, for us as first time parents, it's been a steep learning curve; there is so much to figure out, it makes "drinking from a firehose" seem like an easy task.  He has been doing great except for a slow breastfeeding start, but I think we're finally getting somewhere. I do have to work some more on increasing my supply, especially in the evenings, when he fusses and wants to be constantly held from 3-10pm or so. I've rented a hospital grade pump and we're having a followup visit with an LC this afternoon. I'm lucky that my husband's schedule is totally flexible, so he can take at least a month to spend with me and baby.

Not much has happened otherwise! We're slowly thinking about incorporating "normal" activities back into our routine (e.g. me going out for a quick coffee with a friend, or husband going to the gym, every few days). I think it will help us stay sane.

Mmmmm, glorious BBQ/grill.  I love good burgers, but also chicken and vegetables (usually marinated beforehand). BBQed carrots, red onion, zucchini, eggplant, corn... yum. Fruits work too - peaches in particular!
  • Glad to see you here @marijaa333 and to hear you're making progress with the BF :)
  • Thank you @marijaa333! Unfortunately we just learned today that she is terminally ill and now it's just about maintaining and trying to help her be comfortable and happy as possible. It's sad news, but as sick as she's been in the past few years, I guess it's not completely unexpected. She will be discharged tomorrow into rehab for a few weeks and then home health/hospice will take over. At least once she's home I can bring Bash over to her place, she's missing him terribly! Good news is she was joking around with the Dr and nurses, so she's in reasonably good spirits.

I'm so happy you are finally with us! Congrats on your baby boy!

@mdogan29 I too am so very sorry to read about your Mom.

My weeks have basically sucked the life out of me lately.  This is the stressful time of year for my job and admins and crappy parents aren't making things any better.  We did have a 4 day weekend so that was great but such is my life these days something had to Q#$#$ it up.  Our invisible dog fence was on the fritz so I had to try and fix it because our wonder pooch is a digger and shawshanked his way under our fence and got out.  Luckily the neighbors kids were outside and brought him right to our front door but I had to get the fence back up and running.  So I finally get the wires figured out and went to go outside and test the collar to make sure it was picking up a signal and while I was walking I stepping in a shallow hole the dog had dug and either sprained the top of my foot or I may have a stress fracture or ligament damage.  They want me to go for an MRI.  So I am now walking around in a boot.

It has to get better soon.  I am ready for the black could to move on to someone else now please!!!!

Hi ladies - thought I'd jump on this board since I'm graduating from the other board (preg after 35). Baby #3 is now 5 wks old and he's getting into a bit of a groove. My 3.5 yo DS is being terrible of course - not listening, screaming a lot, hitting - but he's super into the baby. 2 yo DD is acting like a typical 2 yo, which is to say she has mastered the art of tantrums and boundary testing. Sigh... All things considered, I think I'm keeping it all together...barely!

We're past the holiday weekend, but my go-to grill at the moment is chicken thighs with a nice char on it - how my DH likes to grill it. I'm a Wisconsin native so my favorite would be brats.

  • Thanks everyone! We're still in a bit of information limbo... Mom was supposed to be sent to rehab yesterday, I went to my grandma's and waited all day to hear from them about the transfer, but it never happened, they found more fluid on lungs and needed to drain again. They drained today and Dr was just in to talk to her and mom said she was going to call me. So things seemed a lil more up yesterday, but mom said dr was holding her hand while talking to her... So now I'm nervous about how this call is going to go. And then I'll have to be the one to inform the rest of the family... I've already been crying today b/c I bumped Sebastian's head on metal bar on our bed while trying to adjust him up higher (had him propped up on bobby pillow) and didn't realize bar was there, we cried for a few minutes together... do you guys think I need to call his dr to see if his head is okay??

  • @mdogan29 I am sure he is fine. I have popped Payton's head several times on the top of the car when getting her out. Probably just scared him.

Keep us updated. Praying all will be fine with your mom.

  • @mdogan29 aww poor baby. I've bonked C's head many times on a decorative corner of the bed I was sleeping in while I was still sleeping in her nursery. Every time when I was half conscious in the middle of the night. I'm sure he's totally fine!
  • @mdogan29 oh man, so stressful! If Sebastian seems normal, I would just observe him carefully for a while. These things happen to everyone, and you are a GREAT mom. I totally get how it would throw you for a loop, amidst all the stuff going on with your own mom. Big hugs.
  • @mdogan - a few years ago, I was carrying DS out to the car (age 7 or 8 months). I slipped on some ice, fell, and dropped him head-first from 4ft onto the ice and gravel. We went to the ER. Aside from the "dropped on your head as a kid" jokes he faces in his future, he is totally fine.

@mdogan29 if he is acting normal then I wouldn't worry. I think we've all bonked our little ones on the head at some point. I hope you hear about your mom soon - it must be very stressful.

  • @mdogan29 so sorry about your mom. And that she/your family are still in limbo about when she can get out of the hospital even after getting the bad news. Lack of clear and timely communication from docs makes these already bad situations so much worse. BTDT. I hope she can at least transition to at home hospice care soon.

  • Thanks everyone!! I appreciate the encouraging words! Sebastian is fine - whew!! :)  My mom, not so much... she's in rehab now though and has had a catheter installed on her side to drain any fluid that accumulates -- probably every few days.  Once she gets home (in ~15 days), hospice home care will take over. We'll just hope for the best!
