Our doctor did carrier testing on my initial bloodwork and found out my husband and I are both carriers for spinal muscular atrophy. Because there's a 25% chance our baby will have it we decided to do the CVS testing @11 wks and should have results in the next day or two (I'm now 14w3d). We're still not sure what we'll do if the test comes back positive but we are pro-choice and have to really evaluate what a child with SMA would mean. I never planned on having genetic testing, but I'm amazed at how much knowledge we have because of it and can make decisions or be prepared in a way that even 5 years ago wouldn't be possible.
I just had to make this decision today, and because I'm at a low risk, I opted out too. Honestly it's not going to change how I feel about baby nor will it prepare myself anymore even if there is a chance. Better to not stress over it and if it happens, then it happens! Good luck!
We decided against it. Mainly for the reasons that we are not high risk, we would keep baby no matter what, and the idea of a false positive is scary! Perhaps we might think differently if we were high risk, just so that we could prepare maybe? I'm not sure. It's different for everyone and it all depends on personal circumstances.
Having genetic testing is a personal choice. While some do have it done to decide if they will terminate depending on the result. Others do it to be prepared and learn about what to expect with their child. With my first I had it done and got a false negative. He was born with Down Syndrome. So this time I will do it again. To be told your baby is OK and then at birth find out that is not the case is really hard to process. So for me I want to be prepared.

Which test did you get a false negative from....just out of curiousity?

Re: Anyone else decide against genetic testing?
While I totally respect the PPs reasons for not getting genetic testing that shouldn't be one of them because it isn't true with -all- the tests.
The NT scan and related blood work.
