just for fun - good names you can't use

What are some perfectly good names that have been ruined for you, and why? Here's my list:

Mary = the black sheep of the family
Danielle = the girl at my school who ate paste, crayons, chalk, etc
Andrew = a horrible boss
Tyler = the classmate who ate his boogers

long list of patient names and ex names

Re: just for fun - good names you can't use

  • Joel - a cousin I don't have a problem with but wouldn't want people to think we are naming the child after
Rachel - husband's cousin with the same situation as above
Samantha - husband doesn't like it
Quentin - family name that has been claimed by my sister (I know no one should 'claim' names but my sisters and I all do it anyway lol)
Joseph - dad's name that has been claimed by sister
  • Loading the player...
  • Rory- Doucebag at my husbands job

    Luna - friend used it.

Lyle/Lucian - We are so set on our girls name, that I can't do either of these names cause I think it's weird when siblings names all start with the same letter.
  • I can't do any name which ends with an S sound because our first name starts with an S, and I worry people will run them together. Examples = Charles, James, Alice, Rose

    I have a ton - I wouldn't say they are RUINED names but I can't use them.
    Nathan
    Jacob
    Joseph
    Patrick
    - All are friends/family who we see often enough where it'd be weird

    Thomas
    Elizabeth
    Grace
    Samuel
    James
-nieces and nephews who I see very regularly

Adam - name claimed by my sister (agree with the above - I only have one sister and don't really care that she wants to claim a name, I get it)
  • So many!

Judith, high school bully for both me and DH (different schools)
    Leander, best friend's kid
Conrad, Cleo, and every other name with a 'K' or 'T' sound because DH can't pronounce them
Ralph because last name starts with F
Hester and all other H names because DD's name starts with an H and I don't like sibs sets with same initials

  • I can't use any Italian names which sucks because there are so many beautiful Italian girl names. DH is 1/4 Italian but has an Italian last name and I am 100 percent British. It would be kind of culturally uneven to use those names! I really love Bianca, Gabriella, Giada, on and on.

I also super love the name Lucrezia because I'm a big history buff but 1) it's Italian and 2) I was basically forbidden by everyone in my family to use it. Haters.

    EDD for #1: 3/19/17
  • Meredith, Anne, Elizabeth, Rose - inlaws we can't stand
Beverly - close family member who I love dearly but she hates her name
Amelia - too popular where I live
Blanche - everyone side eyes it
  • Alice - my grandmothers "american" name (but she mostly goes by Aly..like "ah-lee"). Love the name, but am not close to my grandmother. Even if I used the name, and stated that she was named after NOBODY, my grandmother and mother would still say the baby was named after her.

Thomas and Benjamin - love the names, but they are both my dad's brothers names and they are both deadbeats.

Heindrik - my great uncle's name, who I adore, but it is too close to my former nanny kids name (who I am still in contact with)

Augustus - because my husband has german roots and a german last name...and its too close to Augustus Gloop.

Elsa - It was our front runner for years, and was our second runner up when my kiddo was born. Luckily we went with something else at the last minute, and several months later, Frozen came out.

Anything that starts or ends with the letter "k" or "c", because it sounds horrible with our last name.

Lucretia is my middle name after my grandma. I've always wanted to use it if I have a girl. :)

Sara(h) - DH had like, three exes named Sara(h).
Audrey - Apparently had a second cousin Audrey who ruined the family reputation
Max - the name of an evil, racist uncle
Lucy - With our last name, sounds too much like "Lucy Lu" - (my argument is that that isn't a bad thing)
Leo - My best guy friend's name. Hubby a little jealous.
Axel - hubby vetoed it. Trying to wear him down.
Tia - it's my sister's name and i like it but wouldn't be naming our kid after her specifically and it would be awkward.
Hailey - same problem. My niece is a Hailey. Sis got to it first.

I basically have the opposite problem! I'm Irish, and there are some really great Irish names out there, but they just don't seem to sound right when paired with my husbands Indian surname.

We're pretty sure we'll be going with an Indian name, but there is a part of me that would like my heritage represented too. That's one of the reasons why I like our current top running boys name - Rohan. It's one of the few names that actually works for both sides of our child's heritage.

I would have considered Kiran (sounds similar to the Irish name Kieran/Ciaran) but we have a friend with that name so it was immediately out.
  • This is a fun exercise!

Audrey - sister in law already used it.
Jack - because EVERYONE else has beaten this name to a pulp. So over it.
Benjamin - one of my first cousin's names, he's a prick.
Charlotte - my husband's horrible ex.
Lorraine - ruined by a woman I used to work with/ be friends with... or so I thought. She's crazy.
Bruce - my husband calls his penis Bruce. Like Bruce Banner ;)

@MixedBerries88, for what it's worth I am about 1/8th Ukrainian and the rest is Italian... Both parents came from large east coast Italian families. My name is Britannia (Latin roots but literally translates to England/ the British Isles). My maiden name was Italian but didn't sound Italian and there is also an English version of the spelling that is common in Britain (my name ended in i and the British version ended in y). Everyone always assumed I was British. Now, my married name IS English to match my very British sounding first name... Anywho, what I'm getting at is don't restrict yourself from using Italian names if you love them just because your married name is Italian and you are British. It really shouldn't matter. Just my 2 cents.

  • @brita722 Okay, I left a key piece of information out. I actually have a given name that is traditionally used by Italian Americans. My maiden name is unmistakably English; it's actually a town in England, that's how English. It was all good when I was my old name. But after changing my name, I walk around this planet with ItalianFirstName ItalianLastname and people are always surprised when a pale girl with green eyes turns up. I just don't want to saddle my children with that because I get all kinds of odd questions. I usually write my full name (I dropped by blah filler mn in favor of carrying my maiden name in the spot) on resumes and the like so I can retain my own cultural identity. My husband is actually kind of salty about the Italian names thing because he was told all his life that he was mainly Italian and a touch Eastern European but through DNA testing and genealogy research, we found out that it's actually the other way around. Luckily the names we landed on are fairly neutral or favor my ethnicity: Elizabeth or Helena. Boy names is Michael which is pretty standard across the board. But I still love Bianca. It's just lovely!

  • @MixedBerries88, Ha! Sounds like we have the exact opposite name situation. I've been asked all my life where I got my name, considering I've got dark curly hair, auburn eyes, and a peachy complexion with olive undertones. I definitely look Italian... but my British names (i.e. first and married) don't match the look of me. It's all good though, I love my names.

BTW, I like all of your name choices :)

  • Andrew - DH's brother, but that was always my favorite

Michael - my foster brother, don't want things weird, but this was my #2 choice

Jeff, Kurt, Zach, and Ryan - all ex's

Presidential names, since our last name is one...

People that were awful for science and/or history (DH and I are pretty smart and nerdy, so no Caesar's or Nero's, lol)

Anything ending in an S sound because our last name starts with S so it runs together.

Anything ending in an Elle sound (Michelle, Isabel, etc) because it rhymes with our last name.

Anything super Italian (unfortunate as I am 100%) because my married last name is super germanic so it sounds weird.

DH vetoed Gretchen even though we both like it and it sounds good with our last name because of some neighbor he had growing up, and also Audrey because it's the name of one of his mom's friends. I vetoed Victoria, which is a great name, because it's my grandmother's name and she's kind of a horrible person so I wouldn't want people to think we were naming the baby after her.
  • Our last name is a color, so all the good color first names we can't use. I love the girls names Violet, Scarlett and Sienna.

Our last name starts with an R, and any name starting with R sounds terrible with it.
    Rebecca -ex of hubby
    Rowan
    Ryder
    Emma-an old friend turned deadbeat
    Declan- relative used it.
    Daniel- hubby vetoed
Ella & Sophia- were favorites for a long time but totally overused now.
Jackson- love, but also overused. And have a nephew with that name.

  • Our surname is along the lines of Kingston,so there are a lot of names we can't use because the "king" part turns things into a verb and usually sounds terrible. We can't use Joe, or Jack, for example, without it sounding like Joking and Jacking (yikes). Or Wayne. Even as a middle name.
  • Our last name is Maas (Moss), so no descriptive words or nature names here lol.
  • Wyatt, Joseph, Isaiah - All names of my most difficult kids at work. And Isabella and Sophia, just because of the sheer number of kids I've had in my class with those names. Really shows just how popular they are.

  • Hugo. It has terrible cadence with my husband's last name.
  • I cant bring myself to use any name of anyone my husband or I have known past or present. We are using some significant family names as middle names only.

Zachary was a name I loved until my sister had a boyfriend with that name (now ex-bf, does not make the name available again)

Avery was a name I wanted for a girl, but hubby insisted it is only for boys so we agreed to disagree and moved on (I like girl names that are boys names so I am surprised this issue didn't come up more often)

I also work in childcare and cant bring myself to name my child the same as any of the children I know. You just get really close with the families and I live nearby so I never want the situation of running into anyone in the future and introducing my child who has the same name as their child, feels like stealing lol

  • Names of popular tv/movie characters or actors are usually no good in my book. Jessa is a lovely name, but it screams Duggar to me. Also, ANY KARDASHIAN NAME.

It's kinda sad because I love the name Kimberly. Khloe with that spelling makes me want to puke, which is too bad because Khloe is the only one I would want to spent any time with.

Olivia - my nephew is named Oliver so that went out the window

Any C or K names - DH says there's too many in our family and he thinks it's too confusing (seriously, there's Kiersten, Kylie, Kayleigh, Kaitlyn, Carter, Colton, Catherine.. and the list goes on and on)

Any names that end in the "ie" sound - stepdaughter is Kayleigh so he thinks it's too much of the same sound and I tend to agree.

This is why girl names are hard for us.
  • Elias - MIL pronounces it like Alien.
Achilles, Dionysis, Socrates - All sound awesome in Greek but Americans will pronounce them the way they know how and it;ll just sound dorky.

    Nick/Niko/Nikolas
    George/Giorgio
    Dimitri/Jimmy
    Alexandros/Alex

.....there's a million of each name in the family. I happen to really like them all but too many boys already have these names in the family (think My Big Fat Greek Wedding! Literally.)

  • Both my DH and myself come from huge families so finding good traditional names that haven't been scooped up has been hard. We have 3 DS and 1 DD with our 5th LO on the way. Our boys are all have very Irish names. Liam Paul, Aishling Kelly, Kieran Seamus so everyone expects a good Irish name if this one is a boy. We have picked Cash Silas if it's a boy and Hazel Quinn for a girl.
  • Scarlett - I love it but our last name starts with sc- and ends with -t. Sounds awful together.
    Josephine- my neice's name
    William- we know many
Ava, Sophia, Olivia,Ellie, - I had at least 1 of each every year while I taught.
  • I love the name Diana and for so long wanted to use it for my daughter. But my bf absolutely hates it because of one of his grandmothers who isn't very nice or supportive. He doesn't want any kind of association with her.
  • I love the manes Gwen and Quinn but the thought if my relatives saying the names with our last name in their redneck NC accent.... I'd rather stab a pencil in my ear.
  • Any name of idiot douchebag exes, namely Jeff, Adam, Jason. Also Camer
  • @corndogrobot I have the opposite problem as a southerner who is married to a Yankee. I'm pretty sure I'll be fighting a losing battle on some nicknames. But I love them all (mostly) so it's all good.

Any name that starts with a "B" because then, the initials would be B.S.

Any name like Katelyn, because my DH had two Katies as girlfriends.

Sophia-- too many people I know named their daughter that.

Julianna--a friend named her daughter that, and my brother in law had a crazy ex named Julianna.

I could probably go on and on! I'm trying to choose names that are not quite mainstream, but not crazy either.
