I'm a teacher and it's time for summer vacation! What non-pregnancy related books are on your must read list? Or what books do you love? I need to read and turn off the Netflix. ">
Did you ever watch True Blood? If you liked it, the books they're based on are great (the sookie stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris). They're great summer reads. I'm currently reading the Game of Thrones series. Also love YA like the Hunger Games trilogy! Hope you find something good.
Outlander is a great read and there are 8 in the series and a ton of novellas too:) Starz just made it into a series too! Watch out you may become obsessed like me lol
I just finished the 3rd book in the Lunar series. Very original retelling of classic fairy tales - sort of like Once upon a time, but set in the future. It's a YA series. There's one more book coming out in November and I can't wait. I finished 3 in 5 days (granted I'm on vacation).
Try the Ann rice her vampire collection is amazing or if you like classics try reading little women takes a different meaning when you read it as an adult
Total chick read suggestions but The Husbands Secret or What Alice Forgot, both by Liane Moriarty Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell The One plus One by Jojo Moyes I also loved rereading the Harry Potter series over the (Australian) summer
Lincoln lawyer series- i think there are 5 books by Michael Connelly. First book was made into a movie. The fifth book was so good I had like a book hangover nothing was a good to try to start after it! Also there are the Patrick Kenzie/Angela Gennaro series by Dennis Lehane. Again one of the books (5 in total) was made into a movie (Bye Bye baby). Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliette Marillier
I've really been into sci-fi lately. The Bone Season is amazing and the sequel just came out! (Bought it on my Nook today!). Safe Haven is my fave Nicholas Sparks book even though the movie sucked. Divergent series is excellent as well as the Women's Murder Club series by James Patterson!
I just finished The Asylum by John Harwood and t was a pretty good period thriller. Some unexpected twists and turns I also like any of the Shopaholic books by Sophie Kinsella if you're looking for some good British chick lit
So I'm a huge lover of classic adventure stories. Around the World in 80 Days has been a favorite since i was a kid. Also the Count of Monte Cristo and Time Machine - could read those over and over again.. Titus Groan (The Gormenghast trilogy - three books) by Mervyn Peake is probably my favorite book series of all time.
Cloud Atlas turned out to be an amazing book if you can get through reading all the local dialects.
My favorite book series of all time is the Earth Children Series. It's perfect, just perfect, everything about it. The first book in the series is The Clan of the Cave bear....and honestly it's one of those books that when you look at the cover you would probably put back on the shelf and never look twice at, it looks like a big boring book, but good Lord it is such an awesome series. I don't even know how to explain it without making it sound totally boring lol, but it's about the first people, back in caveman times, and the main character Ayla, is a lost little girl that gets taken in by neanderthals, but she is a newer generation of people and much smarter and cleverer than these people. They have to discover everything, a cave to live in, fire, how to hunt, just everything from the very beginning and it's such a beautiful story. If people read one book series in their lives it should be that one.
My favorite book of all time is Lonesome Dove. Long, but soo good. I also really like The House of the Spirits (I've heard it's like the feminist version of 100 years of solitude-- couldn't get through the first few chapters of that one, too boring)...
I'm looking through my Goodreads and some that stand out are The Hotzone (it's about ebola so if you're squeamish don't do it... I loved it)... Hiroshima (obvious), any David Sedaris book, Year of Wonders (about the plague... I might have macabre tastes)... and of course GAME OF THRONES!!!
Agree with so many of the recommendations above! I especially loved What Alice Forgot. Right now I'm addicted to anything by Liane Moriaty or Rainbow Rowell. Just bought Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee but currently re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Enjoy the summer reads!
Edited to add that apparently Luckiest Girl Alive is a page turner but I haven't looked into it much!
I LOVED the Silo series by Hugh Howey. It's a really addicting mystery/dystopian series of 3 books and very well written. I wanted it to keep going when I was done! The Kindle books are really cheap too
@Whovian84 me too! Did you read the prequel, too? You might like The Jakarta Pandemic by Stephen Konkoly. It's a great book, but a different genre than many PPs seem interested in.
@spottedginger --what is the name of the prequel?! I'm so excited that there's more! I will definitely check out The Jakarta Pandemic--it looks right up my alley. Thank you! Nothing like some dystopian, post apocalyptic lit to put pregnancy complaints in perspective! I've been thinking of revisiting The Handmaid's Tale too. A classic!
I haven't read all of the posts (many), but I doubt this is a repeat.
Fiction: _God Help the Child_ by Toni Morrison
Non-fiction: _Drive_ by Daniel Pink _You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train_ by Howard Zinn
That is all I have read this summer, but suggest everyone go out and grab those titles especially if any of you are fans of those authors. The Zinn title is actually his autobiography.
Re: Non-Preg Related: Good Reads?
Also love YA like the Hunger Games trilogy! Hope you find something good.

I'm MOST looking forward to reading Toni Morrison's newest novel God Help the Child. So much so that I refuse to start it until my vacation.
I like novels about turn of the century Ireland. "The Countrywoman" by Paul Smith is... emotionally a very hard read but a wonderful book.
Edited to add that apparently Luckiest Girl Alive is a page turner but I haven't looked into it much!
