June 2015 Moms

Dressing Your Postpartum Body

Hi J15!
Maybe a little soon considering we haven't hit June yet, but with my impending induction (T-minus 3 days), I had a moment of shallow panic where I thought about the one thing that has been the bane of my existence for the last few months: Clothes.
How on earth do you dress your postpartum body without looking frumpy and pregnant in the summer heat on a budget?
STMs any advice? Any plans FTMs?

Also, I'm going to go ahead and apologize for starting a thread after being a bit of a lurker for the last 2 weeks. I've been in a funk, add that to our crazy-looking board and I've been stricken with absinteeism. Forgive me!

Re: Dressing Your Postpartum Body

  • First off, yay @frankengibbs! I was a little worried about you! Second - great thread idea. I've seen some ladies posting about using a belly band or something to help the doughy middle reduce, but I'm not sure of those actually have a proven benefit so I'm not sure I want to use one. Except for csection moms. I can see a benefit there for those. Also, it reminds me a bit of a girdle for bringing in the waistline of old timey ladies, and I'm not really down with that.

  • Ha i was just in the store trying to shop for a going home outfit for myself, i ended up putting everything back and buying some clothes for my step daughter n husband! i know ill loose a few lbs haha but imma be all flubbery. :( i just dont wanna feel like a umpa lumpa
  • This is driving me crazy too! I'm trying to stock up on flowy maxi dresses since those only really need to fit up top, but even finding the right kind of maxi dresses is a challenge! I've been on the look out for ones that either have buttons or a neckline that can easily be maneuvered to accommodate breastfeeding (such as this one that I found at Kohls last weekend: https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2038908/daisy-fuentes-print-surplice-maxi-dress-womens.jsp - I got the one in navy). But yeah, definitely a challenge! Would love advice from STM!

  • My last csection I had to wear yoga pants with the big panel while healing. After that you just gotta dive right in. The area will be numb and feel weird when you start wearing normal pants again. I actually would fold toilet paper and put on scar/numb/pain area to have a extra buffer.
  • @mellymar Sorry to worry! I have the same sentiment about the belly band things. I feel like I'm about 2 decades too young to be wearing a girdle, not to mention that every time I wear pants with the maternity band that covers my stomach I end up feeling ridiculously hot... I get the recommendation for them, but ehhhh...

@RondaRassat I bought some cute-ish sweats that won't make the pads and full butt underwear feel as embarrassing and dehumanizing, but as far as tops, I'm lost. I already have a long torso and I just don't want to feel dumpy and fat. I so get the feeling of just saying "F it" and leaving the store.

I worry that a maxi dress will be to clingy and make me look odd, but after getting one for my baby shower and having the comfort of jammies without looking like I'm wearing them, I'm considering them more and more for my postpartum wardrobe.
  • @MrsWiggleWaggle I'm the same way and it makes me feel like I'm being a total brat (probably because I am), but when I feel frumpy, it kind of kills my mood so I'm trying to avoid getting into that slump when LO arrives. But clothes are such a pain! :((
  • at the rate the temperature is rising.. i wont be wearing any clothes after i give birth. too damn hot.
test DH to see if he REALLY loves me :P

gross disclaimer: will be wearing underwear, dont want blood on the carpet. and probably a bra to keep the girls up to avoid boob sweat.

LOL! I would take that route but we have mirrored closets and I'm not so sure I want the constant reflection of my floppy body in the mirror. But I live in a desert climate so depending on the heat, I might loose my ability to care.

@dancegurl1118 I'm toying with the idea of those big men's tank tops that became so popular last summer and sports bras. Intentionally loose clothing is definitely an upside to having a summer baby.

The trick is loose and flowy... there are some that are meant to cling to the body and I am staying far, far away from those! But the ones that are more flowy I think should work well!

  • Maxi skirts, knee length cotton skirts and PJs
  • I wore nursing tops and yoga pants and after about 6-8 weeks I went shopping g and got clothes to cover my "nursing fat". Frankly it sucks but you also get to dgf mode after being up all night and constantly getting spit up on and feeling like a milking device
  • Wear maternity pants and a normal shirt and then just carry your baby everywhere over your stomach frump. No one will even glance at your belly when you've got a cute baby in the way lol

But seriously last time I wore a tank top under everything that I bought from
Costco (I think I saw them at target too) that had a stomach panel that was super tight and meant to suck everything in. It was hot sure, but I felt much better then I would have been had I been tugging at everything.
  • Definitely maxi skirts and dresses! My body is a solid 12-14 so i do jeans and tighter tanks and tees because my gigantic boobs hide my less then firm belly. Im 6ft tall and athletic build and jus think those go to items ate key. I love flowy things but they sometimes make me look bigger then i already im. Enjoy your baby good luck wotht he style. I look at pintrest also they sometimes have good ideas on a few staple items!

I just posted my worries on this somewhere this week!!!!
Ppl say you leave the hospital looking about 5 months along.......
And I wondered if people were still wearing Bella bands for part of the summer or if I should break down and buy maxi dresses because those Bella bands are constricting to me! But.... Yes... I need advice for this as well!
Legit thread! And holy boobs is right.... If these go up anymore from the E they are now.... I'm screwed.
  • Ok, so I did some Pintrest thread snooping and they have lots of flowy tunic-like tops, loose-fitted cotton tees (ironically V-necks) paired with shorts, rolled up sleeved flannels with flowy tank tops, yoga pants, and lots of loose maxi dresses.

Yeah feeling frumpy makes me sad........... :((
  • I'm the most comfortable right now in maxi dresses and kimonos. Light and airy and cover up my arms which have lost ALL definition. Anyone found any other good maxi dresses?

Especially when everyone else decides to get dressed up...I know it's shallow, but I just can't help it.
It makes me sad, too! I feel really frumpy already and don't want the trend to continue
  • @frankengibbs Glad you're ok. Totally understand being more of a lurker lately. I've spent more time hitting "love it" than actually speaking.

I'm going with flowy maxi dresses, skirts, pjs and nursing tanks.
  • really envious of all the smaller breasted women. i was a 34E at 18. now 20 and pregnant i have no idea what they're at, but DH says they've grown. now if only they could be perkier and smaller post breastfeeding. [-O<

I need some advice, I'm expexting my first in exactly 32 days and I can't seem to find anything that makes me look or feel small and pretty! I keep thinking of how much weight I'll need to lose after baby gets here (roughly 80 lbs) and it is overwhelming! And my boobs are now in their own part of the galaxy. I don't think there is a bra size for their ginormousness (?word?)

Probably a dumb question, but where would one find a moderately priced maternity tank top?
Also, sorry for any worry...I've been in a funk for sure. Getting ready for LO's arrival and allof tthese doctors appointments have left me feeling a bit checked out on TB, but I always lurk! Lol
  • @frankengibbs I got my maternity and nursing camisoles at target-now they're camisoles not official tank tops so I most likely wouldn't wear them out in public but they do help around the house!

I wasn't a fan of the maternity tank tops they had last time I was there, but I'm willing to try again. I do love Target...
  • I will definitely be rocking the nursing tank/yoga pants look again, and possibly maternity pants as needed. Dresses/skirts are ok comfort-wise, but I prefer to be in pants at least while i still need to wear pads for postpartum bleeding. I have some good nursing tops I ordered online from Destination Maternity for DS1. They always have sales, and usually some good reviews. Also have a few nursing tanks from Target that look like cute workout wear, which I love.

I got one from Wal-Mart for less than $10, I believe! Not much support but I always wear bras under tanks anyway so I'm ok with that.
