Always get induced with GD?

I know there have been tons of questions about GD a and some are tired of hearing it and I'm sorry ahead of time for my question but couldn't find it in the search bar... Question is most of the time are you induced before your due date if you have GD even if it's diet controlled no medication? My dr hasn't said anything but at my Lamaze class the teacher said no matter what they induce you at 38 weeks... Just wondering if anyone has experience. Thank you

No, my sister had GD and went into labor naturally two days after her due date. No problems.

I am being induced, but in week 39. The placenta can deteriorate, and shoulders can become too wide (common with GD) which is why they don't want GD patients to go full 40. Doesn't mean it will happen to everyone, but it's precautionary. You may also just go early, naturally. I'm hoping I do. My dr. Says its a game time call... We'll know more at week 38/39.

GD with first two pregnancies, also with this one. I was induced with first, failed pushing, ended up with csection so second time i refused to get induced, went into labor 2 days after my due date, had the baby naturally...hopefully for the same this time around.
  • GD with both previous pregnancies. First was induced 2 days after due date, no issues. Second, induced during 39th week (because my doctor was going to be out of state the following week, and I really wanted her again.) Haven't discussed it yet for this pregnancy, but shooting for my due date.
  • I have GD and my midwife told me I can go in naturally. She said I would only be induced if I had to go on medication and did not go before 40 weeks.
  • I changed Drs last week(my dr is moving out of state at the end of this month) so at my next appt I have a growth scan and I figured I would talk to her about it then. My previous dr said since with both my previous baby's I went a week and a half over my date so she said if she was delivering then she would have me start taking the raspberry tea after 37 weeks just to try to get my body going early so I'm not going over my due date again. I think it all depends on your dr and what's going on with the baby.
  • My cousin-in-law has Type !, so insulin dependent.  With all three of her pregnancy they said provided everything was looking good, they would induce at 39w.  She did have to be induced earlier for 2 of the 3 because of per-eclamsia, but went into spontaneous labor with her second.  They were all vaginal deliveries.  So no, not all doctors say 38w no matter what, even with Type I.
  • My OB seriously tries to avoid inductions. His rate at the hospital is under 1 in 150, so he does pretty well.
That being said, he has made arrangements to have me induced at 38w2d as I was only a couple points below the GD threshold on the 3 hr

  • The policy for my hospital is non- medicated with no complications - no induction until after due date. But they do growth scans and NST to make sure baby and placenta are doing well.

I've been put on medication though so I'll be being induced earlier.
  • Thank you so much for all of your great responses ladies!!!
  • My Dr said they induce only if you go on medicine at that for my office is at 39/40 weeks. If you stay diet controlled my Dr office treats you the same as any pregnant woman and will allow you to go up to 42 weeks before inducing. I asked about placenta deterioration at one of my appointments they said it was more a concern for women who were diabetic before pregnancy not for GD.
  • I was induced at 40w4d. Baby did growth scan at 34w and he was actually on the small side. I was diet and exercise controlled. They won't let you go past a week past due because the placenta can deteriorate

My ob induces at 39 weeks for sure. I will start meds Wednesday when I finally see mfm as my numbers suck with diet and exercise. Induction date may be sooner based on how things go from here.

I had GD with DD and this pregnancy...Dd was born naturally at 39 weeks. My understanding is you are more likely to be induced if you are on medication. Otherwise they will just monitor closely to make sure baby doesn't get too big.

  • The policy at my hospital is induce at 38 weeks if you're on insulin, or at/soon after 40 weeks if diet controlled.
  • I was GD with my first and doc never discussed induction. My water broke at 38 weeks and baby girl was 6.5 lbs so definitely no size issues. This time, I'm GD again and seeing a different doc (we moved out of state) and this doc hasn't mentioned inducing either. I would imagine it's a case by case thing depending on your situation and the docs comfort level. I think it's crazy that you were told in birthing class that it's "always" done a certain way since clearly that's not the case.
  • Yeah I thought so too... I asked my OB at my last appointment and he said 39 weeks due to the placenta degrading? 38 weeks if the baby is getting to big in there. We will see I guess! Thank you for the input!!

GD with all of my pregnancies. The first I got induced on Feb 4th and had him Feb 5th (which was my exact due date). Second time I was due July 10th but was induced July 6th and had him July 7th. This time I am again due July 10th but we haven't talked about when we'll induce this time. In my experience GD does always lead to induction because after your due date the placenta can deteriorate and the size of the baby, especially shoulders, can become too large. But I also was never induced that early!
  • I've got GD and dr has said to induce at 39 weeks....BUT baby's abdomen is a little small so we may go earlier OR later. My last baby was 9 lbs 6 oz and I had a 3rd degree episiotomy and shoulder dystocia and didn't even have GD then. I am getting growth scans weekly to keep an eye on her growth. I'm also on glyburide to help control the GD. I think each situation is different. This pregnancy is completely different from my last 2!!
  • I was scheduled to be induced at 38 weeks and my water ended up breaking three days prior to the induction date :)
