Gwen vs Gwynn

My husband doesn't like any of the names I love. However, he has suggested two that I like. Gwen being one of them. Then, he throws a wrench in it all by mentioning that he prefers Gwin-spelled Gwynn, better than Gwen! Wth hubby?! Anyway, I can't decide if Gwynn is masculine?? Any help here?!?!

I agree! Why is compromising so hard?! Clara and Holly are beautiful, simple, girly names! Lol Anyway, I've found Gwynn to be Celtic and a girls name, but Welsh uses Gwyn for a male?
  • Gwynn is not a correct spelling. It looks more like a surname. Gwen, however, is adorable. Have you considered using Gwen as a nickname? Gwendolyn, Gwyneth, and Guinevere are all lovely as well!

  • Definitely Gwen. I don't think Gwynn is masculine, but it looks make up.

According to behind the name which is pretty much the credible go to source for history on names states Gwynn is welsh and masculine. So Gwen is the obvious answer.

edit: It states it is a variant of Gwyn which is also masculine in Welsh.

Thanks....I've found both girls name and boys name information on it. Are there any other credible sites?! I'm probably looking at crap sites!! Haha

Ya I wouldn't use any of those as far as being credible.  A lot of baby sites online ANYONE can post to, it doesn't take into consideration the history or the etymology of a name, just that someone states it's a name.  Behindthename does and if it does end up adding a name that say is very modern it will show as a user submitted name.  This is the about section of behindthename

Most of the regular name nerd on here use this site for actual history and usage of names vs a lot of what google gives you to use.

edit:  I admit I like to look at nameberry for lists but I then check them of BTN to see if there is actual history.  Personally I would want to know if a name I liked was actually made up or I was using it or saying it incorrectly.

Awesome! You've been a big help!! Thank you!!!

I really like Gwyneth! Maybe I can convince him to use Gwyneth, and we can Gwynn as a nickname for that! That's a compromise! But now it's getting complicated, and I don't just want to make sh*t up! Lol
  • My thoughts on this: any time you can NOT have an extraneous y in the name is the best choice. GL!!!

Haha, that would be a nice compromise, especially since @bbiutmcph confirmed that Gwynn is an actual name, like a BOSS! But since it is confirmed as masculine, maybe the nn could just be Gwyn if you go with Gwyneth?

I'm currently trying to sell him on Gwyneth. He's difficult! I feel like I'm compromising, he should too! Lol But he said....no thanks! I'm going to keep trying though!

I didn't read all the replies so I may be repeating things, but...

I would go with Gwen. Gwynn seems unnecessary.

Also, I pronounce these differently. Gwen rhymes with HEN and Gwynn rhymes with WIN.

My husband wants to use Gwen with no longer formal name. I'm pushing for Guinevere but he's not really a fan of it or long formal names with nicknames either.

On its own, I think I like Gwen better than Gwin or Gwynn, they looks a little silly to me.

I mean this in the nicest way possible.

Veto Gwynn and Gwin. It's time hubby learns to compromise.
