Trying to Get Pregnant

exercise while TTC

It's important to stay fit and healthy when trying to get pregnant and throughout the pregnany. Are there preferred methods or sports activities to avoid? Like contact sports or is it ok if you were doing it before during TTC?
I have been doing yoga for a while and sometime I worry about how hot it can get in the room and how this may impact implantation, for example.
Do you have a preferred method to get a good workout that still gives you peace of mind?

Re: exercise while TTC

  • It's okay to exercise however you'd like while you're TTC. Remember it can take a while, so I think staying active in ways you enjoy is best. You can worry about modifying after you become pregnant. :)

Even when you get pregnant they say it's fine to do your normal activities and exercise unless it's a contact sport or risk of falling (skiing, surfing, mountain climbing etc), and to just listen to your body. While TTC do everything you would normally and adjust once you get a bfp!

  • I think until you get a positive test then keep doing what you're doing. Unless you are working out so much that your body is out of whack, in that case you probably would not be getting a period anyways. If you are really worried about it I would say just slow down in the TWW. Even then if you get a BFP you don't have to stop working out. You might have to talk with your OB on what they recommend. Most will tell you to stay active unless you have a reason you shouldn't. I ran while KU up until 38 weeks. My body told me when to slow down. Contacts sport of course are not a good idea but I don't see why not while TTC.

  • I am with you. I totally believe the advice to continue doing what you're doing, and that it's scientifically sound. But I just can't help fretting over hot yoga, and I also used to do aerial yoga, where a silk holds your body weight around your abdomen. I've given both up in favor of vinyasa, even though it has a lot of twists. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to live in your head. The stress of wondering if I was affecting my chances outweighed the benefit of the workout.

I spend the time I would have been at aerial at the gym instead. I run a little, lift a little, stretch a lot. Still getting in the same amount of exercise, just shifting what I focus on.

  • I think anything goes while TTC as long as its not stressing your body into annovulation. Even when your pregnant you can keep doing activities you have been participating in with a doctors OK. I played pretty competitive volleyball until 33 weeks pregnant with dd. After that I started being unable to jump much. Your body will let you know when its time to back off.
  • Great advice, thank you!
  • I go to a zumba class regularly and it doesn't seem to change the way my cycles are. I don't see why it would hinder implantation.. You have to remember that women back in the day got pregnant all the time while working in the fields everyday and a lot of them gave birth while in the field. Exercise is good for your body and you want to be healthy when you do get a BFP.
  • Sunflower- that's so true! Haha hopefully nobody has to give birth in the field though. I guess I worry that pushing yourself too hard or for too long could make conditions unfavourable for implantation (high body temp, a twisted position eg).

I lift weights and routinely have a heart rate past where it's safe during pregnancy. Ultimately I'm not pregnant, so I'm not going to act like it or treat my body like it is until I see that second line.
  • @27alex - Thanks for the opinions.
  • @lostkyte - I have also started doing flow vinyasa. The room is 27C not like in some hot yoga I was doing.

The more in shape you are, the easier the easier (hopefully) the pregnancy will be on you! Think of it that way.

We also have a Monday Health/fitness check in... Feel free to join us!
  • @27alex - Sometimes when im running I think "if I can run up that hill I can do labour" Motivation to be fit haha to make labour easier. Great I will probably check it out! Thanks

I echo what PP have said.  I'm not sure if the yoga you mention in your post is an actual "hot yoga" class or if the room just gets hot during regular yoga, but I believe hot yoga isn't recommended if you are or think you may be pregnant.  I just did a quick search for why and I found an article that said some think the heat can disrupt the process of the neural tube forming and closing.
