Who's a nurse and pumping?

Long shot but any Alberta nurses? I have been working casual and staying home with my son, so no maternity leave for me this round. Did any of you pump while at work with your babes? It's looking like I'll be taking two months off, and then working about 5, 8hr shifts each month. I had lots of milk last time, but am a bit concerned about having to pump at work this round, as I'd be leaking like a fountain. Being a nurse is super busy and people get testy if you're gone for an extended break... Did you have any problems? Or are they required to let you take time for this?

Re: Who's a nurse and pumping?

  • I am not a nurse, but my sister is and is still nursing her 6-month-old. However, it's a struggle and she had to fight a lot with her boss and HR to get all her breaks and a good place to pump. I worked in HR for a while in the States. Here breastfeeding is protected by law. You need to give breastfeeding women their breaks as scheduled and provide a clean (not bathroom) place to pump. You could talk to your HR about laws where you are at. What I never understood with my sis having to fight so much for breastfeeding as a nurse is that they are nurses they should know the health benefits of breast milk and support this choice if you ask me.
