Birth Plan

I've typed up my birth plan and now I'm just deciding how many copies I should make. I am thinking maybe one for my doctor, one when I go into the hospital, and one for the nursery nurses. Will you be giving one to your doctor? How many copies did you make?
Mine is not that long, just 6 bullets for labor & 6 bullets for baby.

Do some of you feel a birth plan is even necessary?

This is my 2nd baby and if DH didn't think the last one was helpful I probably wouldn't have made one this time around.
My last one was the one off Baby Center.

  • We gave one to our doula. Didn't bother giving it to our office because I have no idea which midwife will be on the day I deliver. We will bring one to the hospital to give to the nurses, but FI will be with me the entire time and knows the birth plan inside and out so he will be able to vocalize my wishes in any given situation. With him there I don't see the need to have the actual paper.
  • This is my second too but I haven't heard of a birthplan printout. I just said, safe mommy, safe baby, keep the pain meds coming. ;)

I'm doing a natural labor and last time the nurses and doctors wouldn't quit asking if I wanted an epidural until the midwife came in and told them to go away which is why I think it's personally helpful for me.

I was really lucky to find an office that you chose who you'll be seeing and that's who you see the entire time you're pregnant and that's who delivers your baby. Last time I also had issues with the nursery nurses we caught them giving the pacifier a few times and wouldn't stop shoving formula down my throat while I was trying to learn to breastfed. So I'm hoping a special copy helps them.
  • I'm on the whatever is going to get us all through safely train and pain meds as I feel necessary. DH agrees but tends to worry when I'm in pain so this could be interesting.

No. In general if you tell your nurse what you want, she will follow it.

  • @karaelaine1991 I feel the same way! The birth plan was just too overwhelming.

Im not planning on letting baby out of my (or my fiance's in unexpected circumstances) sight, But I definitely understand why if you plan to put the baby in the nursery you would want it to be clear on paper what flies and what doesn't when you're not present.

When we made our plan it was more a tool to organize our thoughts and explore options for ourselves so we would be prepared, not so much a hard and fast this is what is going to happen. I'm definitely not delusional over here thinking I have any control over what will actually go down, it just helps for FI and doula to know my preferences ahead of time to properly advocate for me.

I have the one I will bring to the hospital with me and the one that my doctor already scanned, I'll bring an extra just in case.

Eta: my doctor was the one that actually gave me a birth plan with A ton of questions and options for me to fill out. There is a ton regarding baby as well.
  • My office gave us a sheet with a list of questions that they would ask (Hep B shot, Vit K shot, will I be wearing their gown during labor, epidural, do I want a mirror to see the birth, etc). I will be returning the sheet at my next appt and they make copies for my chart and everyone who may need to see it. It was a really easy process!

If my hospital offered something like this, I would've been all over it! You are so lucky!

  • @karaelaine1991 I feel great about the birth plan. There were a few questions that I was like, Hmm I didn't know this was an option or wow, I didn't realize I needed to think about this. My midwife explained that they don't want to step on anyone's toes or not give us a specific opportunity (cutting umbilical cord) and want this to be as safe and "pleasant" as possible.
  • It would be nice to have a checklist from doctors about what we want. Having to do it ourselves, it was a little overwhelmingly r me trying to think about everything to research and consider.
  • That would be nice to type up and give it to doc and nurses. Add such as i want my dh to cut the cord, please no pacifiers, no formula, I want to be present for vaccinations and circumcision, visitors are restricted. However they don't accept birth plan. Maybe I can call and ask them if they would accept that as reminder?
  • I'm not doing one. I also didn't do one with my twin pregnancy, my one and only concern was for their health and safety. There were too many factors that could have come up and I trusted the Drs and staff. My nurses were great and asked before they gave formula or pacifiers. This time around there are too many factors (antigen E positive and GD) that I trust the doctors and staff. I know that we will probably need to giver her formula to stabilize her blood sugar.

I wrote one with my first but labor was so fast it didn't matter what my delivery preferences were and our hospital is "baby friendly" so kangaroo care and breastfeeding were encouraged, even in the NICU. That said, I had 3 copies signed by my OB: one for my OB, one for the hospital, one for the nursery nurses. This time around I didn't feel like it was necessary.
  • I think it's helpful to make 3 copies.  The first one you bring in to show your doctor or MW during one of your prenatal appointments.  This way you can discuss it and make sure you are all on the same page.  Second copy for the L & D nurses when you arrive in labor.  And the third is just an extra or can be given to nursery nurses.
