Cheating...

  • Most soft cheeses in the US are pasteurized! Just check the label in the store. Feta, fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, etc are all fine. I've read that you still do want to avoid moldy cheeses like Brie and blue cheese. But, alouette makes a Brie spread that is delicious, just like Brie without the rind.

I do avoid soft cheeses at nicer restaurants in case they are house made or of the fancier, raw variety.

Every once in a while I'll cheat and have a sub - usually toasted. It's just the only damn thing that seems to be appetizing to me lately. And of course I'm a tea freak, so ever since I found out I was pregnant I literally have been measuring out my morning cup of tea to make sure it's the alloted amount! :)

I love cold cuts, but somehow that's about the only thing that I've managed to not "cheat" with so far!  I used to drink caffeine throughout the day easily.  If I was up early I had a couple of cups of coffee, and no matter what time of day, my beverage of choice was Coke.  I have managed to cut back quite a bit by substituting non-caffeinated sodas (and sparkling fruit drinks like Izze, which I've loved for years) in for my Coke, and I don't generally do coffee during the day, so I can usually do get by with one or zero caffeinated drink per day.  It's been tough, though.  When the headaches come, they've been brutal.
  • I had a chicken salad sandwich today, from a deli. I see that many of you feel comfortable with and have been eating deli meats, so I feel a bit better about it.

Anyone have links to info on just how common a listeria issue actually comes up in a pregnant woman? @katmgrath92 ?

  • I get migraines so I occasionally break my no soda rule for a half a coke to get rid of them. I had well done steak with my first kiddo and swore I never would do that again. Blech! I usually love sweets but right now can't really stand them. But I can eat those little Packaged burritos for every meal. Lol

The CDC website is definitely your best friend when it comes to bacterial infections/risks.

    Best of luck!

All beef frank hot dogs!! Yum yum yum
  • I never stopped drinking coffee or running. Even though I told my mom I did both.
  • For some reason I've been craving deli sandwiches and salads. I've had at least one sandwich a week.

The way I see it is that 20 years ago they didn't have these restrictions. I ate a turkey sandwich yesterday, fried oysters on Saturday and I eat fried food all the time bc it's the only thing I can keep down. When I told some older women I was with that I couldn't eat lunch meat or other random things they thought I was crazy.
  • Caffeine! I used to live on unsweetened iced tea , so so hard to give up . I have been drinking more than my daily limit :(

Dr. Pepper. My baby seems to crave it.  Helps the nausea go away...at least for a little bit! But I only allow one can a day, if needed. And chocolate.
  • I "cheated" and got a culvers concrete mixer last week.  And I've had a few frostys.  And a cup of coffee every morning.  And lots of chocolate.  Oops.

My husband and I were discussing restrictions yesterday, and he was like, "How did the human race survive up to this point?!"
  • I'm not really restricting anything at this point. I cut back On soda a bit. I had a very yummy hot dog yesterday, and I can't think of anything I'm explicitly avoiding. Being pregnant has decimated my sweet tooth. I can't even barely eat one York patty anymore!

I eat anything that doesn't eat me first.  I don't like deli meat and I don't like most of the cheeses and things that are supposed to be no-nos so they are not an issue.  I do like sushi, but no one else here does so I haven't had any of that either.  The worst thing I eat is porbably mt morning doughnut, but I watch my weight carefully and my labs are good so I think I'm doing good.

  • I need a deli sandwich several times a week- if I can help it I get it toasted but sometimes that's not an option. Either way, it's one of the only things that I can keep down- nothing fried or too cheesy, and no pepperoni, salami due to heartburn! Trying to snack on lots of fruit now that I'm craving it all the time though- usually watermelon, pineapple, peaches
  • Runny eggs and toast!! Only once in a while and I make sure I cook the eggs well enough that there only a little yolk
  • veckiaveckia member
Yeah, before I knew better I ate runny eggs and blue cheese. I miss blue cheese so much!!! I've started craving coffee again too. Luckily, decaf seems to satisfy the craving.

Diet coke is my weakness, but not too much. Other than that I've been craving salads... Which is completely weird for me. I'm kind of s steak and potatoes kind of girl normally.

how funny, I've been craving salads, too!

not a bad thing (obviously), just not what I would have expected.

I've mentioned my random craving for salads, but I've also been craving deli sandwiches.  so weird!

I broke down and ate a ham sandwich last week.  I really want a turkey sandwich, though.

  • Only keeping down pasta with butter and salt and pepper. Life is thrilling right now
  • Yes, I was worried at first but as long as it is pasteurized, and most fast food or restaraunts are, you will be fine!!
  • Ugggggh.
For 3 weeks i was eating yellow rice, habichelas, and stew chicken from my fave dominican take out spot. Until i began having headaches---immediately i thought, "too much salt"
Mozzarela sticks are a must anytime i go out.
Now im loving Taco salads with extra sour cream, guacamole, and the green spicy sauce that accompanies.
I find it hard to drink water----but i am trying my best.
Empanadas fro Sazon in Tribeca was my fave before the pregnancy, now the thought of it makes me nauseos.
  • Oh Yeah!

I made a grilled cheese and Turkey sandwich the other day....thats how im getting away with eating deli meats.
    It was soooo tasty.
I even put the lettuce on the outside after it was done. Lol.
  • This baby is turning me vegan!! I normally love meat and fish but I just can can't stomach it. I could eat a veggie wrap from Publix eveyday!
  • I had Jimmy Johns a few nights ago..if it's wrong, I don't want to be right...

But seriously though, I don't have one in my town. Dying. For. Another.

Anything sweet makes me want to barf. Coffee smells terrible but tastes amazing. Single serving popcorn bags? Yeah, I've been having two at a time..but they're the organic 100 calorie ones so I don't feel TOO bad.
  • I can't stomach any meat at all. I basically envy anyone who can because I'm petrified the baby isn't getting enough protein!

  • I cut out deli meats completely after reading up on listeriosis. Same with soft cheeses (mostly). Feta on my pitas bought from the Greek place in town. Bummer because i love love love brie! and was totally craving sandwiches in the beginning, I did have a few before I read up on it. Sounds icky, not willing to risk that.

I am however, eating sushi once every few weeks in place of my weekly cooked fish amount. The sushi concern is bacteria, the risk for mercury is the same whether it is cooked or not! Just find a list on "low to high" mercury levels in different types of fish.

A little bit of caffeine here and there, like three glasses of red wine total to date, with super strict/ baby protective daddy's permission ;]

McDonald's french fries and decent amounts of chocolate are a semi-regular thing!!

Dairy and lots of carbs are bothering my belly. I'm an ice cream fanatic usually and have barely been able to touch it.
  • Loveeee the Pregnant Chicken, thanks for sending me there. Great. "The List." I've done a lot of my own research on some specific things, and even had some of the same references that she had! But good still to find like-minded people, and to even consider the tea thing, which I had NOT. Just convinced me more that my (occasional) sushi habit is still super ay okay.

I was actually advised by the NP I saw earlier this week to start drinking a little more caffeine, because I mentioned that I was a regular caffeine drinker pre-pregnancy, and how dramatically I've cut my intake.  She said I'm likely making the headaches worse in doing so, and that a couple of caffeinated beverages a day is absolutely fine as long as they aren't larger portions.  Definitely made me feel better about that "cheat."  And I had a sip of some craft beers my sister brought over from Wisconsin, but I'm not normally a beer drinker so I wasn't tempted to partake further.
