Solids before 6months???

I'm not trying to start a debate so please don't get your panties in a bunch I just want to know what your reasoning was if you started solids before 6months if 6mos is the recommended starting time?

Re: Solids before 6months???

  • I am curious about this too. I thought it was between 4-6 months. I wanted to start a little later but DS is SO into our food right now I am tempted to start some rice cereal. I am going to wait to talk to the pedi though. Curious what others say.

  • We are actually starting her on single rice cereal today!  She is 5 months and she is ready.  She has doubled her birth weight, sits with support, shows an interest in food when we are eating and BM is just not satisfying her like it used to. Our Pedi said it was OK to start her between 5-6 months.

I would have liked to wait until she was 6 months old, but she is ready now.

  • I'm thinking between 4-5.  I would have liked to wait longer, but at 6 monthes, I'm going back to work and I don't want to do so much change all at once.  Plus he's eating so much more now, and I am going to need to build more of a supply for when I go back to work.

Of course, I will be waiting to talk to his pedi at his 4 month appt before I do anything.

  • She also has been STTN since 8 weeks and our Pedi said that if she starts getting up numerous time during the night to eat, to start solids.  The night before last, she was up twice and last night she was up 3 times to eat.

I am not saying in no shape or form that giving cereal will help her STTN again.

  • At DD's 4 month checkup, the pedi said that we could start anytime between then and 6 months, there was no rush.  Pedi said that DD seemed ready physically - neck and head control, putting things in her mouth, seemed interested in our food when DH and I ate.  I tried rice cereal at 4 1/2 months and DD wanted nothing to do with it - tried again right before she hit 5 months and she took it with no problems.  I was not in a hurry to give it to her, and so we have slowly been moving the amounts up, but she really is only getting a couple tbsp each day of oatmeal and rice cereal.  The rice made her a little constipated, so I did give her some pears a couple times.

  • Between 4-6 months four months being the earliest.  We waited til DS 4 month appt before even considering starting cereal and waited another month before trying.  DS has been interested in us eating for a few months now and most pedis and books say that once your child starts showinginterest in eating and starts to mimic your movements then they are probably ready to start solids.

That being said you should slowly incorporate new foods into your LO diet and definately wait to atalk to your pedi before actually starting solids

  • We plan on starting DS this weekend. As pp stated he is sitting up well in his high chair, he has more than doubled his birth weight, he is very interested in our food and seems to want to take more bm throughout the day. Pedi wanted us to start at 4 months, but we have waited until now.
  • My dd is 4 months old. We talked to the pedi on Tuesday about this. He told us that it really does not matter when you start the solids, but they should not be your child main source of food- the formula should be still. He said that make sure that you are using a spoon and never put the solid in a bottle, because the main reason for starting solid is to teach the babies how to push the food to the back of their mouth with their tongue, and also to teach swallowing.

we actually started rice cereal on the spoon about 3 and 1/2 months. HOpe this helps.

  • dd is 4 1/2 months old and everybody including family keeps saying you need to start her on solids... why haven't you started her on solids blah blah... I just don't see the rush. DD had alot of problems the first two months with her milk so I just don't want to rush into anything that may upset her belly. My SIL started my neice on solids at like 31/2 months and I thought that was just too early. BUT although the AAP recommends starting at 6 months alot of Pedi say you can start them on first foods at 4 mo. and a couple of days ago I got a thing in the mail from Gerber about when to start solids and whichs ones and it said that I could start DD now... but I am just not rushing into it. I think it is just personal preference. 4 months or 6 months
  • Where are you getting this information?  Sources don't seem to agree on a specific age, even the AAP is all over the place.  Sometimes they say 4 months others 6.  However, from my own research, the recommended age is between 4 and 6 months and some even go as far as saying you should NOT wait any longer than 6 months.

    Edit:

My baby was showing signs of readiness.  He sits well supported, showed interest in food, lost the tongue thrust reflex, doubled his birth weight, etc.

  • I was dead set on waiting until 6 months because it's "what the AAP recommends", even though DD was sitting on her own, showing an interest in food, started fussing even after a full nursing, and started waking several times a night to eat when she had stopped doing that several weeks before.  Then I went to the AAP website and on their Parent FAQ in response to the question of when a child should start solids, it says between 4 and 6 months.  So we started her on solids last week and she is such a happy little camper now.  We started her with bananas and are working through the first foods now, about 2oz a day.  I nurse her first and then just let her eat as much as she wants until she's done.
