Birth control post-pregnancy

Re: Birth control post-pregnancy

I didn't use birth control after having my DS in August 2013. I breastfed for a full year and didn't have a single period or any signs that I was ovulating. My doctor said that it's possible not to ovulate while breastfeeding but not super common. I also had postpartum Thyroiditus which could have caused me not to ovulate... I weaned DS shortly after his 1st birthday, had my period once and then got pregnant.
This time around I'll probably use a diaphragm or he'll wear condoms. I am a beast when I'm on any form of BC so I won't be taking any. We want one more child but want to wait a couple of years before I get pregnant again. I feel like I haven't had my body to myself since December of 2012! Which was when I found out I was preggo with DS!

Well since I couldn't get pregnant on my own, should I really waste my money and subject my body to more hormones?? Or is that when it will happen naturally...when we aren't even trying???? This will be our second and most likely last, but we do have two frozen embryos that have been tested and are healthy, so if we DO decide to go for number3, I would want to use one of those. So...we haven't decided on a bc method yet.

I asked my husband to get the procedure done, since it's reversible for him and he looked at me and "nope"'ed me. So that's that

So what are you going to do?
  • hswan26 said:

We are done after this one so I'm getting the essure done. We talked about DH getting snipped but I'm not sure he will actually commit.

Make sure to research Essure. A friend of mine has had a ton of problems with hers and had to get a hysterectomy because of it.

A lot of ppl in another mommy group had lots of issues with essure also, pls research as much as you can.
  • No more babies here, hubby is getting a vasectomy so I don't have to worry. Even when I did use BC, I never fully trusted it and I never liked it either.

Oops! This thing ate the rest of my comment. I don't know what I'm going to do, I am really interested in what everyone's plan is since my doctor didn't really have an opinion about it. Told me the options, didn't go into much after that.

  • Not planning on any birth control. During 5 years of marriage I never ovulated without medical intervention, and it took many dr appointments and 2 failed IVFs (not to mention many less intense treatment attempts) before finally having a successful IVF for this pregnancy. Sort of hoping I'm one of those small minority of infertile women whose fertility is boosted after giving birth and that maybe we'll spontaneously get pregnant within the next year-ish. Even if it happened just a few months after giving birth, I would be so excited and thankful to get pregnant again without spending thousands of dollars and going through all the hormonal treatments. Especially since we definitely want more than one child and we're starting our family years later than we would have hoped for. But, if I don't get pregnant naturally (the most likely possibility), then we have one frozen blastocyst remaining, and we'll do that transfer next summer and hope for another pregnancy then.
  • There doesn't seem to be any silver bullet here. At this point, I'm planning on Mirena, but I have some concerns.

One of our docs likes to tell the same old joke at every 6 week follow up....
Here's your options for birth control
    Number 1, abstinence......
    Lol
  • I think that's one of my biggest frustrations @klkonwi ..I know the doc said it as a joke but when you ask a lot of women what they're going to do for BC they scoff like "please, I can't even imagine sex again", and then a lot find themselves pregnant in that short time period because it wasn't pushed by their practitioner to really be serious about BC after birth

I'm happy we're having a discussion about it, even for lurkers who hadnt really thought about it but it at least gets the idea out there.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • I was googling up on natural birth control cuz I cannot use or trust or want it to destroy my vagina. Well...I asked dh about surgery on his part. I feel that is fair...if I am pushing a few kids out of my vagina. He should snip snip. It is not like a year of recovery....he disagreed. So I told him...you might want to be ready to say good bye to all expensive things we have in hobby!
  • So my doc said I could take the Yaz like I did before we started trying. He knows I'm BFing & said it was safe.

After reading the pamphlet with it & reading online - I think I'm going to ask for the mini pill to try (praying they have a sample pack bc I already filled this month's Yaz).

Anyone BFing & on the pill already? Supply drop? How's it going?
  • I just started the pill and it hadn't changed my supply any. I've been able to pump more after he eats, and he's upped what he's been eating, so I don't think I'll have an issue. I feel like I would have noticed something already.

But. I an spotting and cramping like crazy. It sucks so hard. DH was freaked out and ready to head to the hospital because I was in tears, which normally happens when I switch BC methods. My body just hates it, I guess. About ready to stop since we want another soon anyway and not put myself through this.
  • I am wanting to be on depo again, but I have to wait til I start my period. Going on 8 weeks pp and no sign of it yet. And I'm not breastfeeding :-/ I just want to have "normal" sex with my husband!

Before even seeing your responses I looked into the essure more. I'm not sure why my doctor suggests it but I'm not willing to risk it after everything I have found. I'm back on BCP for now while DH goes through the process for his vasectomy. Thanks everyone for the concern!
  • Anyone have or had paraguard? I'm scheduled to get it on Thursday. Trying not to google it! Lol

I'm in the same boat - 9.2 postpartum, not breastfeeding, no period and can't start the pill until it happens.... argh. Dr. Google says it should be between 1-3 months if not breastfeeding and to call your doc if it gets to 3 months - which is quickly approaching!

Exactly what I read too...very frustrating!
  • So I just got the mirena......some minor bleeding is occurring. What was fun is that the doctor pointed out that I might have to have vaginal surgery...... He stated "does this here hurt? It didn't heal correctly and the edge is sharp so if it still hurts with intercourse you'll have to have surgery to fix it."
Awesome: at the ripe old age of 28 .... I def planned on having vagina surgery. Kill me now.
  • Oh crap @klkonwi. That sucks
  • Yah. I wished for a cesarean. No flaming needed.

@klkonwi ummm That's messed up. I'd be more pissed at the OB who did the repair bc I don't think things just "don't heal" it was probably a missed stitch. I'm sorry!

  • 2nd day on combo (pro&estro) BC pills & I'm wondering if it already screwed my supply. LO was SOOOOO fussy this afternoon & ate after an hour all upset. I drank some mothers milk tea & I'm planning on calling tomorrow to ask for the mini pill. It's hurting my heart to think she isn't getting enough.
  • @dancegurl1118 I am pissed at him. Which sucks because I'm so close with him and previously loved him. I guess everyone makes mistakes but come on!!!!
  • @klkonwi so sorry. That freaking sucks. Fingers crossed for no vagina surgery.

I asked at my six week appt (last week) which methods won't hurt my supply and was told the pill, iud, and the arm implant one... So I picked none of the above. I'm terrible at pills and the other two are less flexible than I'd like. I have a very irregular cycle and would like to see if I even out naturally, or am even willing to have littles that are very close together... But I'm letting my husband drive the protection bus for a while.
I used the mirena until about three years ago, had that taken out when we were ready for a baby, and was on nothing with perhaps biyearly ovulation since then... I was about 11 weeks pregnant when I figured out I was expecting our ds!
  • I just got the mirena put in. It took about 5 minutes and hurt less than an internal exam during pregnancy. It's been about an hour and I haven't had any cramping. I was worried since there are lots of scary stories out there but it was nbd.
  • I've seen some of you have had the mirena done and have mentioned either no cramping (like PP above) or some cramping / bleeding. I'm considering getting that for my BC choice, how long did y'all have discomfort or bleeding? And - side question that no one may be able to answer... When I was on the BC pill I had a lot of bad headaches. After going off the pill they really went away in frequency and strength and I can only surmise it was the hormones. My OB says usually when that happens its the estrogen that causes headaches, and since the Morena does not have estrogen it *shouldn't* give me headaches, but of course can't say for sure. Anyone have experience like this or know someone who got a hormonal IUD and didn't get those damned headaches?

My period took forever to return when I got off the pill years ago. My Dr didn't want me to have the same problem since I want another baby a few years down the road, so she recommended paraguard for me, which I had put in today. It's a copper IUD. The insertion didn't really hurt at all. I have slight cramping now but it's not bad.

ETA: maybe this is an option if you're worried about headaches?
  • @mellymar Obviously it's too soon to tell yet but I get migraines and the NP said the same thing about estrogen.
  • I got the DEPO shot right after labor. I got my period last week and was hoping it'd end soon. My doctor said it might not end because of the shot. I never read one of the side effects was endless bleeding. Switching to Mirena or Paraguard mid September. Womp womp

They gave it to you right after labor?? Wow never heard of that!
  • My bleeding just lasted for the day with the mirena. It's gone now. No biggie :)
    @mellymar
  • Also, I asked about Paraguard recently before searching this discussion. [-( Sorry! Exhaustion made me one of THOSE! I'm annoyed with myself!
  • @mellymar I had migraines really bad a few years ago due to the pill I was on having too much estrogen. I could predict within a day when I would have one. Always the Friday or Saturday after starting a new pack of pills. Thry were so bad I would vomit. I had just been getting them through my general practitioner and when I saw a gynecologist she said it was 3 times the amount of estrogen I needed and switched me to Lo Loestrin FE, the one with only 4 blank pills. I had very short, light periods on it and only took a month off before we started TTC, and the next month I was pregnant. I plan on going back on it since I'm not breastfeeding anymore. I don't know about Mirena, but your doctor was probably right about the estrogen causing your migraines. I hope you find something that works well for you!
  • Thanks for the info on the mirena and experiences with hormones and headaches, all! Really helpful!

  • @mellymar I'm still bleeding from mirena. My OB said up to 3 months. It's just spotting, panty liner amount. And since I'm not getting in a bathing suit any time soon I don't care.

  • I'm getting the mirena tomorrow. Did any of your doctors have you take misoprostol before you're appointment? I just took the first dose, and I'm getting nervous. Not sure why...

  • @aliciac2008 probably to try and dilate your cervix a little for insertion. Never heard of it but that's the only thing I can think of?
