20 week scan - belly button ring

So I had no idea and they did not warn me that a belly button ring would need to be removed for the ultrasound. Luckily I had already replaced my ring with a pregnancy retainer so it was easy to take out while in the office. I needed pliers to get my ring out so I'm very glad I had removed that a few weeks ago. On a side note, my baby was all snuggled up at belly button level so not sure if that made a difference on needing it removed. Just a heads up to those mommies out there with belly button rings that have not done their scans yet.

I didn't have to take mine out. Maybe they didn't want to get the gel on it...? I haven't even put in a retainer yet, just a tiny 18 gauge barbell.
  • I didn't have to take mine out of my scan, but my belly button is stretching and was a little red on top from my belly button ring rubbing on it so I finally took it out.  I don't know if I'm going to get a retainer or just leave it out.  Probably just leave it out.  I've had it for 13 years!

She said mine "may" get in the way so I just went ahead and took it out. She never rolled the scan thing (apparatus? thingamajig?) as high as my belly button, but there was gel up in there, haha! I think it's just easier to remove it, especially as many are metal (maybe it would scratch the scanning part?). Mine was also a longer one so it hung down almost 1/2" below my belly button.

Krina18 , just curious, why did it take pliers to remove yours...?

She had to scan near my belly button to see the baby at the right angles and said the ultrasound could not see thru metal. My scar tissue also put a black line through the image at certain angles. @adcoxmt I've had my ring for 21 years it was an small gold circle. I had to use the pliers to ofset the top and bottom of the circle to get the ball twisted off, then in order to pull it out I had to offset it more to get it looped all the way around to slide it out. I'm going to have to buy a new one if I want a ring back in later :(
  • On the info sheet I got from my doctor last time I was there, they said to remove all body piercings before the ultrasound at my next visit.

@krina18 Dang, that sounds complicated, haha! I just use the "standard" ones; I change em out pretty frequently too. When you go to buy another, check bodycandy.com and see if they have the kind you like. They have a ton of cheap ones, as well as surgical steel for those who need/prefer it!  ;)
