Werid habits during pregnancy?

hey moms,
I've been having really werid habits that have been going on for a while like washing my hands & body constantly w/ "Irish Spring" bar soap cause of the smell so much I carry it around every where I go & need the urge to use it, & also stopping by landuary places just to smell the cleanfulness of clothes. Was wondering if anyone also is having werid habits like this?

Sounds like a PICA. I would discuss this with your Dr, especially if you get the urge to eat it. PICAs are usually your body telling you that it is lacking a nutrient.

I chew ice constantly. Form of pica due to not having enough iron. Yeah make sure you don't start wanting to eat the soap exactly as @laurendutch said!

I've always chewed ice, but have never been low in iron or anything. I think I just like ice! Lol. I've gotten better about it because it drives my husband nuts.
  • I want to rent a carpet steamer. DH says no. *pout*
  • For me I compromise with ice chips instead of chewing gum when I want to concentrate on some paperwork at work. I have ADHD and am off meds during my pregnancy, also trying to avoid excess caffeine and gum because the kinds of gum I like have a lot of artificial sweeteners and preservatives I don't think are good for baby. So I do chew ice, but I think it is just because it is the most harmless thing I can think of to do. Some kind of sucking/chewing motion is helpful in the afternoon when my concentration power is lagging. Also I get so overheated, the ice is helpful for cooling off!

I'm anemic in the third trimesters and I'm all over chewing ice. Constantly. Also the smell of pine sol I'd never eat it but I'm completely obsessed with it. Last time was tea tree oil. My husband thinks I'm a weirdo
  • I'm obsessed with the smell of pampers. I literally have to walk down the aisle every time I go to the store and take deep breaths. I'm sure the obsession will end once DD is here and is creating unsavory smells in those pampers :))
  • I love the smell of leather- like new shoes smell. Even walking into Walmart and that smell of plastic... Ahhh
  • I'm really OCD when I'm pregnant, but I think that's completely normal.

Pine Sol for me, too. I love that smell so much during pregnancy! It instantly relaxes me and sends me to my happy place :x
  • I been craving baby powder with cornstarch. I have been eating it without my SO knowing I only crave It when I'm stressed. I told the doctor they did nothing but told me not to eat it.smh I had this pica craving 12years ago with my last child and my Ob prescribed me pills to take that helped. My new ob sucks /:)
  • Meat has recently started tasting nasty and if someone prepares it in my kitchen I flip out because I don't think they are preparing properly in my head to avoid bacteria spreading. I'm not a vegetarian; this is a recent thing.
  • I was like this for the first 5 months. I couldn't smell, eat it or see it. Even a commercial about ribs at a local restaurant had me running from the room.
  • I'm really OCD when I'm pregnant, but I think that's completely normal.

I just learned that it's not uncommon (though not common, either!) for it to develop post partum, so I could see it being normal in pregnancy, too. BUT! Do you really mean OCD like where rituals/compulsions are interfering with your life, or do you mean it more in a "nesting" way, like you just really like everything to be clean, etc.?

Idk I do know I break down and get all irritated when the house is messy or unorganized. Like last night I just would not allow myself to sleep until I cleaned the living room spotless, loaded and started the dishwasher, and washed a load of clothes. It's hard too because my husband is quite messy and I have a three year old boy who is the same. With another little boy baking in the oven.
I just grew up in a really messy and disgusting environment. Like pee jugs next to the beds and ramen dropped in the carpet and left over night with roaches that would crawl all over and bite me.
I think that's why I've became this way especially since having children.

Well, start training up the little guy now to not be messy, and make your husband work on it too! I know, easier said than done. Good luck. I wish I had a bit more of the cleaning itch. I worked for about half an hour on the house this morning and now I'm just lazing and bumping!

@Westypet we went to the car wash and the bubble brush went crazy and we were covered in blue pink and green foam. I wanted to take a pic and post is but it was too hectic. We could have filled a pool with the bubbles. It covered our tires. Crazy! You would have loved it :)

    Omg heaven.
Sorry for the insanity, but I would have been in HEAVEN!!! SOAPPPP!

Asked my DH if we could wash the car today with the Gain soap!!! Haha.
  • Baby powder is a pretty common PiCA. Just from googling it, it seems like you can be deficient in Vitamin D or Iron. At your next appt, ask for bloodwork, you need to know if you are getting enough Iron in your diet.
  • Yes... ICE... I love it! I love my ice from my house, we live in the country and our water is independently owned and I am pretty sure they use too much chemical to clean it but I love it! Also I randomly walk in the kitchen to smell the frost in the freezer! I love the smell and there are a couple of closets at work that smell like card board and I love to go in there and just take some deep breaths! Lol my associates just have to laugh at me. :))
  • I've definitely been more into ice since being pregnant. I thought it was just because the weather was stinking hot but my iron levels are low and come to think of it, since starting heavy duty iron tablets I don't seem to be craving it as much.
  • Anyone love the idea of eating ice crushed? I bought a snow cone machine just to enjoy the "snow"! So easy to eat and so yummy! I eat it like twice a day lol
  • Sonic's ice! I buy a bag a week and have since 2nd trimester.

Everytime I go out w/ my husband anywhere or when I wake up first thing I do is run to the restroom turn on the sink wet my hands a little & grab the Irish spring until my hands are white, bubbley, & I can smell the sent long enough I also do that with my body I scrub rinse scrub rise about 3 4x . I once wanted to eat it but I left it alone & just kept washing my hands & body, one lady told me I am nervous about something.

@Frogger5 & @NotISaidtheCat I told my doc twice and he said that I wouldn't harm the baby. It will just have me constipated. He had nothing to prescribe. :(

I think getting pneumonia or going into respiratory distress could definitely harm the baby. You're putting your own body at risk by eating baby powder, and by extension your child. If you're going to keep doing it whatever, but don't look for sympathy for choosing to do something risky and stupid and also whine about not getting a prescription to deal with what basically amounts to a vitamin deficiency. You've been given tips and advice on how to deal with this craving that are all easily doable, what more do you want?
Woah, @NotISaidtheCat, she talked to her doctor and he blew her off. Twice. It's obviously not as easy as "just stop eating it." Who are you to tell her that that is "easily doable"? You clearly aren't in her shoes. Her doctor said it wasn't harmful - we all might disagree, but if that's the advice she's been given by the person who is supposed to be looking out for her and the baby, what else should she do but seek help from wherever else she can, including internet message boards? She clearly knows it's not healthy or normal. Geeze. Usually I couldn't care less about people being "mean" to others on here (it's half the reason it's fun!), but this is just misplaced and totally missing the point.
  • @Frogger5 I want to sniff, bathe in, and drink Pine Sol on a daily basis. I basically live by the tips I gave, and I haven't done it even once (in three pregnancies). From what she's described, she's hiding this from her husband and keeping the baby powder in her house. Not doing those two things are huge steps toward following her doctor's advice, which he obviously thinks is all she needs based on the information she has given him. Has she given him the full story? Is she giving us the full story? I don't know, but from what we've been told this is a simple fix. If it isn't no one here can help her like a doctor (who she has to be 100% honest with or else it still won't work) will be able to.

Of course we aren't going to be able to help her, but in this case I would actually err on the side of supportive rather than accusatory. For some people saying "don't do that, it's not good for you" is sufficient, for some it's not. Do you think everyone who has addictions or compulsions should be able to just stop? And owning up to them is easy? Maybe you aren't embarrassed to tell your husband that you don't trust yourself not to drink Pine Sol and you need his help, but I can certainly imagine that a lot of women would be. I'm just saying I read your post as super harsh given the situation, and that's all. She tried to get help from the person she should have approached and she didn't get it. Assuming that she wasn't forthcoming with him and that her doctor did the best he could is a big assumption. There are a lot of asshat doctors out there.

Maybe the meds you were prescribed last time are unavailable now and there are no pregnancy safe alternatives. You need to discuss this candidly with your doctor and you do need to suck it up and stop eating baby powder. Get it out of your house, don't buy more, and tell your husband you're having this problem so he can help hold you accountable.

Most baby powder contains talc which causes severe respiratory issues when inhaled, and if you're eating it you're definitely inhaling a dangerous amount. Besides the talc there are artificial fragrances and other inedible ingredients to contend with. Baby powder isn't even recommended for use on babies, so there is no reason to have it around tempting you.
Yes, all of this! Talc (in baby powder) has the same molecular makeup as asbestos which can cause mesothelioma (lung cancer). Please stop and seek professional help from someone who takes you seriously.
  • Not gonna lie, haven't wanted to drink/eat the Gain bubbles, BUT I have thought about using the dish liquid for bubble bath. Not sure about that either, so hand washing it is!

    See ladies I wasn't lying :D
  • I never realized how widespread the PICA and whatever the smell/feel version of PICA is. You all seem to have a good sense of humor about talc/soap/ice/chalk. It strikes me as very weird, maybe because I've never seen it personally. I hope you guys have the medical and personal support you need. I worry about you guys and exposure to some of this stuff...even the soap. Does it resolve after you give birth? Best of luck weird pregnancy habit mamas, I'm sure you are doing your best to keep you and your baby safe and healthy! I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.
