Honestly, skip the cute stuff. You shouldn't use bumpers and can't use the blanket that comes in the sets. Get some cute sheets and you're done. Don't waste your money. I regret buying cute bedding the first time because only the sheets got used.

This. However, when I was a FTM, I don't think anyone's warning would have stopped me. Carousel Designs (babybedding.com) is adorable and where we got #1's stuff

My 2nd child got plain white sheets. Haha.
That's true. I also saw warnings and just wanted the cute stuff. I was so dumb!
Agreed- can't use most of the bedding. But I just want to purchase all of the baby quilts I see! I guess it will just drape on a chair hahaha.
I did that and then it got annoying be they are so stiff they don't stay on chairs. It ended up folded in the closet after a month! It's still there. I need to consign it...
You can also use a quilt as a wall hanging in the nursery.
I did this and it was very cute. I fully support just buying sheets because it's all baby can use at first anyway. Although, My son does use the blanket that came with his set now. It's just going to be a dust collector for awhile.
I would skirt the sets too. I bought a breathable bumper with my first eventually bc she started moving around and got her arm stuck. I would by a couple of cute fitted sheets and a bed skirt. That's all you need for now.
Second time mom and I'm having another boy, but I still have a set picked out. Only because I never got to have a nursery with DS1. He didn't have his own room until he moved to a toddler bed. I told DH I'm going all the way on the nursery because this is probably the last baby. My set is from target though and I'll wait until it goes on sale. ">

This this this! With my first I spend almost 800$ on bedding from restoration hardware baby. Well, about a week after I ordered it, I was informed of the whole "no bumpers" thing. All I ended up using was the sheet. The rest of the fancy blanket and bumper collected dust in a closet. I could have bought the same sheet for 15$ at target. First time mom mistake and very common. Take this advice please!!
This time I will do cute sheets and changing pad cover. A cute throw blanket on your glider goes a long way too.
I was just thinking about that yesterday and everybody I talked to said just do sheets...I was at a consignment sale and got a nice bed set for $4.50 and I'm glad I only paid that much..will use the blanket when I'm covering the car seat but not on the babies bed..
I just noticed none of the crib sets at Target even come with bumpers anymore. They have sheets, a comforter, crib skirt and some have a matching blanket. Maybe they're finally going out of style.

Some states have banned them completely so I think a lot of places stopped selling them.
Reguarding bumpers there may be a correlation to SIDs because they reduce airflow.
When I first read they were a suffocation hazzard it didnt make sense to me. I thought how is a new born going to pull them off and suffocate? But now it makes more sense.

I think they were actually outlawed in some states.
I'm so torn on this, because I've got the first time mom I want cute things syndrome. But I'm also really stingy and hate wasting money. The few that I have been looking at on Amazon are ones that include a whole bunch of accessories for room decor, too. So even though some of the bedding items would be pretty useless, I could spruce up the nursery on a theme really easily. I will say, though, I'm pretty sad about the whole bumpers thing. I think they're so cute, but obviously with the known suffocation risk I wouldn't put my baby in that position. If I get a set I may put them on for the first bit while baby isn't actually sleeping in the crib, haha.

It's not pulling them over. It's when they can roll and their faces get stuck up against them. My daughter was rolling to her belly by 2 months but couldn't roll back over for another month. It's easy to get their faces stuck up against things like that.

I would save your money for other things.
My daughter is 3 and still barely ever sleeps in her room. It all was a waste. But I'm not the type to go big decorating a nursery anyway. We kept it the same neutral color and just bought curtains, a rug and 3 pictures. I would rather spend money in other areas. But themes aren't really my thing.

In all reality it'll probably be nothing more than me doing a few little diy decor items to hang on the wall because I love crafty stuff. But part of me likes to convince myself that I'll actually put together a cute nursery. I also thought that I'd decorate our house real cute and that hasn't happened yet either. So you're probably right, at the end of the day I'll probably just pick up a few cute sheets and call it a day.

The first time around we went all white sheets (not really a theme/kiddy gal, although I've seen friends with very cute rooms). Would highly recommend just getting a few plain white even if you do go with the cute bedding. It was so easy to wash (bleach) and as he got older could interchange with any blankets we had in his crib. Also, we ended using our old aden and anais swaddles as top sheets now that he's a toddler. They are the softest thing ever. I noticed they are now making actual sheets and crib bedding. Looks adorable:
Yes! Others have already said it. As cute as those expensive sets are you seriously are just wasting your money. I'm one of those people who try and really consider the advice of others and I'm so glad I listened to my one friend who told me to skip the bedding set.
One thing someone did suggest that comes in handy is to buy 2 mattress covers (water resistant things. And you layer them.
So mattress cover-sheet- mattress cover- sheet.
That way if you have a middle of the night blow out or huge puke or a soak through the diaper then you just peel off the top sheet and mattress cover and don't have to fuss with changing sheets at 3am.

We just bought cute Target sheets and Aden + Anais blankets. We're in Houston and it's way too hot for big heavy blankets even when she got old enough for them. Save the money on the bedding to put towards a nice chair or glider in the bedroom. Lots of snuggle time in a comfy chair.
I agree with the no bumper rule but not so much with no blanket or to just skip the cute stuff! We bought the fitted sheet, bed skirt and the blanket. They've all been used. The blanket was perfect for a play mat on the floor and now that she's older we use it as a blanket in her bed. We bought her stuff from Land Of Nod. If it's a girl this time I plan on getting bedding from Carousel Designs. For a boy I've seen some really cute stuff on Etsy but I don't remember specific shop names.

When I went to order from pottery barn I kept getting notices that the bumpers were no longer available. I was like WTF?? Now it makes sense! I think places are starting to take them off the market v

This. As far as bedding goes I'll be getting sheets and the little mattress protectors. Layering these for those late night messes is truly a godsend. So even if you get the cutesy everything DO NOT forget the pads to go underneath. This is baby number 3 for us and this is one routine I swear by those first few weeks.
Thanks everyone! This is baby 3 so I def know bumpers are just plain pointless and a danger. This is the first girl so hopefully I'll find something girly. I've always draped the blanket over the glider until the babies were old enough to use it. Still want sheets and the bed skirt and matching everything though. Ha
I noticed the other day at Target that they have toddler bedding sets. They may be a lot cheaper than baby (everything with the word baby raises the price). But would fit a crib since toddler mattress is the same size. I didn't look too much into it, but it may be something to think about. I also thought about getting a twin size quilt that I could put over the glider but drape over the crib for company.
