Baby Sunburn!! :(

I tried to keep my pale little redhead out of the sun today; but she still managed to get a sunburn on her inner legs and arms. Has anyone else had this problem and what did y'all do? She's 7 and 1/2 weeks now. I'm a redhead myself and know what to do for an adult. But my mom said I never got a burn as a baby; so she's not sure what to do either.

Check with your pediatrician. Not sure what is recommended for infants. I know they don't recommend sunscreen though, just keeping baby out of direct sunlight if possible. You should invest in some SPF clothing or covers for your baby. Poor little girl, hope the sunburn isn't too bad.

  • Unfortunately, I don't know who her pediatrician is. I'm a military wife and they have changed her pediatrician as of her 2 month appt., which she hasn't had yet. Fortunately, when we woke up this morning, it has mostly faded. Thankfully it wasn't worse. I need to figure out a way to cover her in her stroller without using the cover. It is way too hot here in Hawaii right now to deny her any of the possible breezes. Maybe I could safety pin a lightweight receiving blanket on it. Would that be too thin though?

When I take my LO out for a walk on sunny days, I put the carrier's shade as far as it can go and then I drape a lightweight muslin blanket over. I only put the blanket just enough to block the sun... The muslin is great because it's so breathable.

  • I would just apply washcloths with cool water, or cool bath.
Check with your dr but I'm wondering if zinc oxide or aloe Vera are ok to use this young?
    Good luck!

You on Oahu? I usually do what the PP suggested and drape a muslin blanket over. You can ask about applying aloe vera if she ever gets burnt again. You can find it growing all over, or buy it processed. I keep a bottle in the fridge and apply when I get burnt. It should be ok, people eat it raw!
  • There are no sunblocks available for such young babies. You need to keep your kid out of the sun. I am extremely pale, and it's helped me be hyper aware of sun exposure. Pull the buggy shade up all the way, put a cover over the carrier, and never leave the shade without those items in place.

I know it's tempting to watch your baby while you take them around, but pull the shades and covers up.

Yup. That's where we're at. Lol I'll definitely try to the cloth next time. Thanks y'all. ^_^
  • Ditto what previous posters have said - the only thing I have to add is to ensure little one stays hydrated and keep a close eye on her wet diapers to monitor such. I'm also a ginger with a red headed boy and am not looking forward to that inevitable first sunburn! Till then shade shade shade - good luck!

Military or local? I thought I was the only one on here from Hawaii! Did we already have this discussion? Probably, I'm losing my mind... Hahaha!

We're military. Lol Hubby's in the army. And honestly, we may have talked before our LOs were born; but I think we're allowed forgetfulness. Lol We've probably been far too busy/tired to remember conversations from a few months ago.
