Failing with food!

Today, I accidentally ate salami without thinking about it. ;( I feel so bad.

Is anyone else having a hard time eating healthy the last couple of weeks? I'm week 11 and I have serious food aversions and when I do want to eat, it's something that isn't super good for me or the baby. Definitely feel like I'm failing with food.

  • I ate a top Roman soup today.....
I never buy those but I was just craving it.

  • It's alright to feed into your cravings every once in a while sweetie. Hell, I eat healthy 99% of the time except for when I want some McD fries. And right now all my cravings I just want some Funyunns and am debating on sending my fiance into town to buy some. Don't beat yourself up for it. It happens. You want my honest advice here? My first two pregnancies I ate A LOT of McDs and nothing bad happened. Both my girls came out just fine and I gained the normal weight. It'll be okay. :)

From the moment I held you in my arms, I knew it was meant to be.

    I adore her smile,
    I cherish her hugs,
    I admire her heart.
    But most of all,
I love that she is my daughter.

Thank you! I needed to read that! We ate McDonald's tonight because the SO wanted it. ;)
  • I ate 4 cookies in the afternoon and now I feel sick and don't want to eat dinner
  • I had the first bologna sandwich since finding out I was pregnant and don't regret a single bite... Everything in moderation is fine!!

Ok, so I know it's really gross, but I admit I ate jack in the box. So good, but feeling so bad.. I even feel bad admitting it- glad y'all mentioned McDonald's!
  • Also had Taco Bell last night, it was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to get it again

I'm usually a fairly healthy eater, and told myself as soon as I hit the second trimester I was back to my good habits and meal prepping, PFT, YA RIGHT! I'm still working out regularly but I am not being as good as I should. Nothing healthy sounds good to me at all, minus fruit. I've been doing a lot of fruit smoothies for breakfast. I know I need to start eating better and more regularly but these prezels and mustard are winning as we speak. Ugh! [-X

    Thank you ladies for sharing!!
  • Ohh fruit smoothies for me are a must. Or milkshakes. With a bit of vanilla ice cream in them. Shh. Don't tell on me lol.

  • Just my thoughts but the first trimester is hard enough if you are feeling nauseas, headaches, crampy etc. that I feel like just getting down (and keeping down) any food is better than nothing at all. I've been so sick that I've lost 6 pounds in the last couple of weeks so today when I ate 3 cookies and a quesadilla I was just happy it was something-- although don't get me wrong I can't wait to be able to stomach protein and veggies again. Your baby will get what it needs just do what you can mama!
  • I eat whatever I want. I dont worry to much, havnt gained any yet at 15 weeks

I haven't eaten fast food in a year or more, it usually gives me massive diahrrea (TMI). I stopped for Wendy's today on my way home. Totally worth it. I didn't regret a single bite.
  • I'm on the it-could-be-worse diet. Right now it's about doing the best I can to get enough calories and as many healthy foods as possible. I'm usually about 80-20 on healthy vs unhealthy foods and all about the veggies, but right now I'm probably closer to 60-40 or even 50-50 some days and veggies make me want to puke. So frustrating.
  • Ohhh my God! Im not alone here
  • The first week I knew I was pregnant I was running around with yoghurt, nuts, fruits and all other sorts of healthy stuff. Then I started feeling miserable and I could not stand that healthy stuff anymore, I just wanted high carb and high fat meals, especially pizza and pasta, and they actually did make me feel better. Also, healthy food requires grocery shopping, chopping, preparing, dish washing. I simply did not have the energy to go out and drag stuff 70 steps up to my apt and then do all that stuff. Unfortunately Belgium is not the US where you also have healthy take-out options like freshly made salads. This past week and this week I am doing a little bit better with more fruit and veggies, making some smoothies and veggie soup, but I still crave lots of carbs. I can only eat small portions, but I want to eat every 1,5 hrs.

Good luck everyone and do not feel to bad. Take a prenatal vitamin and apparently your baby is taking everything it needs from you, so you need to take care of you too.
  • I eat McDonalds once a week and usually get a delivery once a week too. I also eat ice cream every day. Other than that I try and eat as healthily as possible the rest of the time, fruit for snacks etc.
I am finding veggies tough at the moment but I managed to force down a salad and some broccoli yesterday.

I am a big believer in having the occasional treat so long as you don't overeat or eat junk all the time. I think telling yourself you cannot eat something just makes the craving worse!
  • You're definitely not alone! I had the chicken McWrap and fries from McDonalds yesterday for lunch...soooo good! I had a fruit smoothie in the morning, so in my mind, that's how I justified that it was okay to eat McDonalds! :) I can't stand the thought of eating veggies right now but I have been on a fruit kick. I made a fruit smoothie (strawberry, blueberry, banana, Greek yogurt, almond milk) and threw a handful of spinach in. You don't taste the spinach and it is so yummy!
  • Don't sweat it... My DH and I tag teamed a 20 inch pizza in London a couple weeks back... I've been eating sandwiches like ALL the time... I'm at 12 weeks and the only healthy stuff I seem to want is fruit but most veggies I absolutely hate... I think as long as you have food in your belly and you don't overdo things whether that means, one bad snack a week, or one a day even... you'll be fine. No one has a perfect pregnancy.. and if they do, I wish I had their grit and determination because I feel like I have none at the moment :P

I eat what I want.  Sometimes that's cherry tomatoes, broccoli, or strawberries, and sometimes that's jelly beans or pizza.  Give your body what it wants, or you're going to be miserable.
  • I'm doing relatively good at eating healthy -- I start with a breakfast essentials protein drink in almond milk in the morning (with whatever I'm feeling like eating for breakfast) and am generally able to eat relatively healthy during the day. My big vice is the bag of little airheads that I have stashed in my purse. I eat one or two on my way home if my daily pear doesn't satisfy (or if I ate the pear before leaving work).

I completely understand about not having the energy to make healthy food though. I'm certainly hoping canned veggies are sufficient and that the pizza snacks and pizza I ate the majority of my first trimester didn't do anything bad... I'm underweight though, so they basically tell me to eat as much as I can stomach and just make sure to include fruits and veggies in that grouping.
  • I agree, I eat what I want. I am not going to go crazy these next few months worrying about food, I have enough to worry about! Enjoy eating for two, just drink plenty of water and eat healthy when you can.
  • Ahhh I'm so hungry for Taco Bell!!! I never, ever eat it and my husband is so against it, so if I get it I'll have to sneak it in when he's at work and hide the evidence. I went to visit my parents last week and spent the whole time binge eating junk since my husband doesn't seem to get that anything healthy makes me gag. I felt like crap for days but it was worth it.

I still have pretty bad morning sickness at 13 weeks. I feel like I'm in survival mode with food, putting anything in my body that I don't think will make me physically sick. I would love to eat more healthy food but my body is craving carbs and starches :-/ Hoping to feel better soon so I can eat healthier!

    Because I can't find any threads about it (I guess because it's so specific) and this one seems to be along the same lines... Last night I went go a dinner party and beforehand I had tried to give a list of all the things I was trying to avoid while pregnant? My friend is not pregnant so I just figured maybe just so there were no surprises... But one thing I forgot about was Parma ham... And she had a melon and rocket salad with Parma ham. It was reaaaaally good but then I started thinking isn't Parma ham something I shouldn't eat?... Ugh... Now I'm freaking out...=__=;;; just need some reassurance. Seeing the midwife for my usual check up on Tuesday so I'll see what she says but ugh. Hating self. ;3;

I wouldn't worry. The concern is listeria and it's so rarely found in deli meats. Especially if you get it from a reasonable source. And that salad sounds phenomenal!!
  • @Ceridwen77 okays. And yea, I'm not sure where she got it from but is guess it was some where good! :) xx and YES!! It was delicious!! I've never thought of having melon and rocket together but ugh I want more!!! Might even work if I replaced the Parma ham with bacon or something?
  • laleiste Or if you cook the ham ahead of time! I used to make turkey breakfast bagels before I found out I was pregnant and once I found out, all I did to change it (before I started having an aversion to bagels, which pretty much sucked) was cook the turkey on the stove. :)
  • I am a super picky eater. I don't like veggies at all. I like mashed potatoes and that's it. I have to make myself have some kind of fruits or yogurt as a snack each day and make sure I'm taking my prenatals daily. My husband gets mad when I want to go out to eat but I love Taco Bell and our local Mexican restaurants. I could eat them everyday! Also, butterfingers have never tasted so good in my entire life! I told my midwife about my eating habits at my first appointment and she said she wasn't real concerned about it but if the baby starts weighing too much or too little she will address it with me then and make changes.

Parma ham or Prosciutto fried on the stove is delicious! And as a bonus, it gets crispy and makes a nice salad topping. Cooking deli meats makes them safer. That said, I totally miss salami. Cooked is just not the same

I definitely agree with the general message of these replies.

At my first OB appointment, around 6 weeks, I asked my doctor about all the things that are "off limits"..she said "You aren't going to ruin your baby if you eat Subway. Crack whores have babies all the time, and most of them turn out fine. Just use your brain." She's a little in your face, but I dig it.
"Crack whores have babies all the time and most of them turn out fine." Gospel.

If I'm not eating canned spaghetti & meatballs for breakfast I'm eating chicken & stars soup. It's bad. Breakfast food other than bacon are so gross to me right now. Also for dinner yesterday I ate 5 White Castle sliders, 10 McD nuggets, and a mashed potato bowl from KFC. I was so sick after. But I couldn't stop eating!

Normally I eat paleo diet (lots of meat and veggies, no dairy, wheat or processed food) because of my own medical issues. Since about week 6, I have not been able to eat much meat, barely any veggies, just tons of fruit, dairy and grain - so, exactly the opposite. I'm week 16 and still have aversions every day, super annoying. My doctor said that if it gets too bad, take Ensure to get calories. Also, Dr. said that it's fine to eat deli meat and tuna once a week. So I treat myself to Jimmy John's almost weekly. :) Good luck and you're not alone!

Ughh what I wouldn't do for some waffles and chocolate from Belgium. Soooo good!! My husband and I went to Brussels on a four day weekend when we lived in Italy and loved it!!
  • I've been craving taco bell lately, which is weird because I don't eat meat or fast food usually. i gave in today and went to get me and the husband some soft taco supremes. There were too many cars at the drive through so I parked and went inside where I was met with both a long line and foul stench so I gave up on the quest entirely and had a snickers for lunch :-(
