Baby Monitors

What brand of video baby monitor would you recommend? I had just a basic monitor with my first and none with my second. I am thinking of  investing in a video monitor this time. I know I will get lots of use out of it as I do in home childcare so down the road I can use it for the kids that are napping in the other room.

We have a Motorola video monitor, I like it. We've had ours for a year and a half though I'm not even sure what's out there now.

  • We also have a Motorola video monitor and like it. I definitely like being able to see my son and not just hear him. It was worth the money to me.

  • Motorola! We've had ours for over 2 years and it's still great
  • @tinaay - This may be silly, but if you're tech saavy a web cam might be a good solution.  Especially if you've got an in home daycare.  I know with my first her daycare had a web cam where parents could log in and watch their child.  The stream was password protected and the password changed each time a child left the daycare.  It was such a comfort, especially in the beginning.

Motorola with the pan/tilt/zoom feature. Also has the 2-way feature so I can talk to him. It's worth the extra money to me.
  • Just a word of caution on video (I have one, only reason I am saying this). This might not apply to you because you are a STM, but having a video monitor seemed to make me more paranoid. I was constantly looking at it instead of sleeping! It's not an issue now, in fact I cover the video part at night now because in our new place it is too bright for the room, but initially as a FTM I stared at it for way too long waiting for a twitch.
  • I have Foscam baby monitor and love it. The picture is always clear.

We got the Summer Infant Wifi Link several weeks back, and while it's never been used to monitor an actual baby, we do have it set up to watch our puppies, and it's been great for that. My husband really wanted one that you could watch remotely via a smart phone or whatever since he works long hours and is gone a lot. This one was pretty affordable and met that need, so we went with it.

Which model of Motorola? Thank you !
  • I'm not sure we have the same brands as I'm up in Canada, we have a levana video monitor. I like it cause I can switch it to just sound or both video and sound. Also I can add cameras to it which I found handy for in our living room for when I would go out and mow lawn if he fell asleep in his swing. Never thought I'd want a video monitor but it was a gift and I love it!!

Be careful with the wifi ones. There are cases of people hacking them.

This. Put a password on it!! There are stories of people hacking them and screaming to get the parents' attention. Scary stuff!

  • I am in Canada too but went to Walmart. I have a Lorex Baby that was on the less expensive end but works great! You only need one remote and can attach multiple monitors in different rooms. It has music, talk to baby, and multiple room scanning.

We have the motorola mbp34. It's been discontinued but has been good. I actually purchased an additional camera, etc to go with it on eBay and I can have one in both of my children's room.

It's more than password protected actually. When you set it up you create an account with the code associated with the camera. Then that account has to authorize any other account to access it (I tried to just set up my own account at first but couldn't because my husband had already used the code). There's also a light that comes on when it's being viewed remotely. I'm personally not that worried about it, given the info and research I've done into our decision.

  • I have the Summer infant video one too. It's still going strong after over 2 years and I can easily add an extra camera for this one :) we have the vetch one at the cottage but the screen is small and details are hard to see (eyes open or shut). I agree I spent a ton of time watching the silly screen... But love you can turn off the volume (without it vibrating like crazy like the vetch one does) or the screen... I don't like that it doesn't have a temperature reading on the screen vs vetch. I contacted Summer infant and they will actually send me the newest version of the touch 3.0 so I can add my older camera to it for the same cost as a new camera itself second hand.
