Baby size (random thought/question)

For a baby born at 40 weeks, what do you consider big/little? You know when someone comments "oh, that's a big baby, ....".
I think anything from 6lb10oz- 8 lbs 7oz an average size baby. Sorry, just a random thought I had. :)

Well in my line of work we have had anywhere from 5 lb to 11 lb babies at 40 weeks. Luckily the rare 11 lb were cesareans....... One wasn't but that was her 4th kid so..... Eek

  • I would consider over 10 lbs to be a big baby.

Omg. Eleven pounds! Yikes! I'm hoping for a nice round six pounds or so. Lol
  • I consider over 8 and a half to be big. I have no idea what percentage of babies are over that mark, but that is my cut off. And of course I'm hoping for 7 lbs or less - we'll see!
  • My opinion is anything over 9 lbs is big.

    Lol! They do!
  • One of the girls in my twin group had a 14 lb baby. He was almost the biggest baby of the year. She has type 1 diabetes so that is why he was so big...but seriously a gigantic baby. I would post a pic but I want to protect her privacy. She might have had a news article though...let me check into it.
  • For me, I would say a big baby is anywhere over 9.5lbs because every time I see a friend who just had a baby in that 9-10lbs range it always strikes me how large the baby is. Especially when they don't fit into NB clothes.
Funny along these same lines, my ILs kept making remarks about how I'm going to have a 13lb baby because they all had big babies and because they thought it was funny. Turns out LO is going to be on the very small side which is fine by me because I don't like the idea of birthing a toddler which is what those big babies look like to me.

I agree. I feel like anything over 8.5 is big, especially when they never fit into newborn clothes. I don't know why, but I'm convinced this child is going to be huge. DH weighed around 7, but I was born at 32 weeks weighing 4 lbs 8 oz and my twin weighed 4 pounds 11 oz which means at 32 weeks my mama was carrying over 9 pounds of baby. She also likes to remind me that my dad weighed over 10. My niece weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces and that seemed pretty big to me.
  • Some lady at my work party was just telling me about a lady somewhere who had a 14 pound baby. Said she saw it on the news. Madness

  • My first was 9 lbs 3 oz. My birth canal was too small so I ended up with a csection. Yes she didn't fit into newborn clothes and the nurses kept calling her moose... so they thought she was big. I did not think she looked like a toddler though
  • Don't worrry..i was all drugged up but remember telling them to shut their mouths and that she was beautiful lol. Luckily all those nurses left and a good friend of mine walked in and was my nurse! So I got to complain to her.
  • I would think maybe 9.5-10pounds. When I told people I had a 7pound baby everyone couldn't believe how big he was and I was just like ummm that's average. I was 7 pounds and so was my husband.
  • So this was the girl that I know from my twin group and her 14 lb baby
  • Here's a pic of him and his twin sisters

Holy cow! That is a really enormous infant. The weird thing is she looks pretty small. I bet she felt like she was going to fall over.
  • Oh my! I feel like he would cause my organs to shut down from the pressure. Cannot. Even . imagine.
  • Here's a pic of him and his twin sisters

Do you know how he's doing these days size-wise? Just curious.
  • What a chubby cutie! He definitely came out wearing toddler clothes lol. I can't imagine how big her belly must've gotten *__*

  • My son was 10lb 5oz, he was big but could still fit newborn clothes and didn't look like a sumo wrestler at all. I also only put on 12kg and left hospital in my pre pregnancy clothes (I'm 5ft 1 and weigh 50kgs) Oddly enough my whopper baby is now one of the smallest in his class. I am however hoping for an 8pounder this time.

I think he's doing pretty well.

I'm totally exaggerating about the toddler thing. I'm sure your baby was/is super cute and not moose-y at all.

    :)

This is what I mean by "toddler"
  • My mom's aunt had twins thay were around 8 and 9 pounds Each....if this happens to me I don't know what I will do. That's 17 pounds of baby in you! :((

That scares me but I'm getting close to there! I'm 33 weeks and already they're both over 5 pounds. If I go to 38 weeks and am induced I'm thinking I'll have 2 that are well above 8 pounds. My first was born at 42 weeks and was 10 lbs 6 oz.

But my little girl has always been in the 97th percentile for weight and height. Both hubby and I are quite tall (5'10" and 6'3") so it doesn't surprise me!

I'm so sorry....lol. I'm 35 weeks and mine are about 5 and 6 pounds. My doctor said if I'm 37-38 weeks and 3cm dilated she'll induce me and I'm ok with that!
  • My MIL was 11.4lbs and my husband was 10.6lbs. Hoping baby takes after me [-O<

Our baby measured over 5 lbs at a 32 week ultrasound. My husband and I are the exact same heights as you guys! Interesting. I'm interested to see his weight when he is born and how long he is.
  • My first was 10#1.8 oz and he was vaginal. I have GD this time around so I expect this one to be big too.

In my NICU we have an actual bin of baby clothes labeled "sumo clothes" for our 10+ lb babies!

Well medically speaking..Babies over 4000gms (8-13) are LGA (large for gestational age) and need special glucose monitoring, etc.. Babies that are SGA (small for gestational age) are less than 2500 gms (5-8) and need the same special monitoring and more frequent assessments - ( these protocols may vary slightly depending on the hospital)
  • klkonwiklkonwi member
@HayesRN13 our hospital actually considers anything over 8lb 4 oz LGA and those babes get every 3 hr glucose monitoring for 24 hrs.
  • DS was 8lb5.3oz at 39w1d and I didn't think he was too big. He still fit into a lot of NB stuff (but not for long), he was a long baby though 22.5inches.

I also ended up with a csection because he was not positioned well and didn't want to come down into the birth canal during my induction.

This time I have GD, so I won't be surprised if baby girl is on the big side again too... I just hope she's not a 14lb-er!!
