Nutritious food --> big baby?

This isn't too significant, but I've wondered if anyone else has an opinion on my unstudied theory.
My MIL has always had small babies, and never ate very healthy. My own mom always had bigger babies and has always had a pretty hardy, nutricious diet.
So if I eat less nutritious will that actually effect baby's size? Or does it depends on genetics?
If you ladies have info that contradicts my theory , feel free to share! I'm just curious if there's a general trend. :)

    Well nutritious foods will give baby what they need to bulk up for birth.

    Junk foods may undernourish baby causing lower weight.

    But there are so many other variables to take into consideration: did they have severe morning sickness, did they smoke, did they take drugs (legal or illegal), drink alcohol, etc.? Maybe the dates were off for both of them, maybe the one with bigger babies always went over her due date and the other was early? Way too many variables.

  • Right!
    Neither of them had smoked or consumed drugs or alcohol.
    My MIL always have birth before her DD, and my mom usually gave birth after the DD. But even mom's smallest baby was a pound or two bigger than my MIL's!
    Honestly, I'm hoping for a small baby. Granted I'm not going to avoid nutrition for that reason, hee hee...

    My smallest was 7lb5oz and my biggest 9lb2oz. I had no problem birthing the big guy (but I was on hands-and-knees; if I had been in stirrups I think there'd have been struggle).

    Anyway just focus on healthy momma, healthy baby. The weight is a surprise you find out at birth and can't be controlled.

  • I read in Ina May's guide to childbirth that GD and PreE are well prevented by an excellent diet. I'm not sure about PreE, but GD causes large large babies sometimes! It's worth it to me to try and eat healthy and avoid junk food to maintain a low risk birth status and continue with my plan for a natural and intervention free birth plan. If I spoiled my own attempts with too much McDonald's I'd just kick myself! Can't let that happen!
  • I'm pretty sure a lot of it's genetics, but too much weight gain in the mama can cause a big baby, GD or not. Doctors recommend nutritious foods and exercise for a reason.

  • With my past two pregnancies I gained 60lbs with both babies and they were both 6lbs. I have a much healthier lifestyle now and wonder how big baby 3 will be.
  • I was just talking about this with my in- laws. My SIL eats healthy anyway, but while pregnant she went full organic/all natural/followed all recommendations to the letter/*perfect* diet and had a very difficult delivery of an eleven pound girl. MIL & SIL said they found out later that it's commonfor the baby to be large - to - overly - large under those circumstances. I don't know their sources. I know people say that unless it's GD a baby can't be too big, but in this case she very nearly was.

    My other SIL is vegetarian but splurged a bit on fun things and both of her boys were 9 pounders. She was a little more relaxed on her diet with the second, he weighed a little less than the first.

    I know it's anecdotal but I think it's interesting.
