so I drank a tequila drink my husband made, didn't feel anything. Now just finished a cup full of red wine and feel something so when should I pump and throw it out ? Now or later?

Re: Alcohol ? Pump and dump?

  • You need to pump n dump for a few hours, its 2 hours for every drink you have.. So I would for 4 hours at least to be on the safe side. Hope this helps

If it's just a drink I just try and nurse before , then have my drink and then by the time baby is ready again like 2.5 hours later I'm all good to go. Now if you're going out for a night on the town then you'll need to keep up your supply so you'll need to pump but you won't want to keep that milk to feed baby. However, theoretically it does get out of your system eventually so it's not like or sits in your boobs until you pump. But you don't want to skip pumping or you'll loose supply. So it all depends on when you last nursed and then had your drink . :)
  • Thank you!
  • They make some really accurate bm alcohol tests that I use just to make sure it's out of my milk

Do not pump and dump. The alcohol does not stay in your milk once it enters, it leaves just like it leaves your blood stream. How long it will take, depends on how much you've had to drink and your weight. You should google it. I did and found lots of helpful info. I also bought the alcohol test strips to make sure there was no Alcohol in my milk.

I use the same strips and agree with everyone. The strips are expensive, but you can usually gage when they'll test positive. I had 8oz of red wine and it still was negative. So you don't need to test "every" time.
  • I found this article helpful. Pediatrician says that one beer a day(start while breastfeeding or right after) and slowly enjoy it will not harm my 1 month old. Beer helps with breastmilk supply so I can finally enjoy beer and not worry about my waistline. I will say I went out with girlfriends one night and had 1 glass of wine and 1 large sake at dinner.. 2 hours later I was at home and tested my milk. It had alcohol present. So I dumped it... Then 2 hours later when it was time to feed, I tested to be sure and alcohol was gone. Good Luck!
  • Brooke! You don't need to pump & dump, your aloud to have up to two or three drinks before pumping and dumping. I read something online about it, the alcohol level in the breast milk is barely anything. It doesn't stay in your breast milk and when nursing it takes more alcohol to get "tipsy/drunk" off of. When nursing it doesn't go to your baby, drinking while pregnant and nursing are completely different. Pregnant it can go through the placenta but it does not stay in your milk. If your worried the rule is "one hour per drink" but there is no need to pump and dump with only one or two drinks :)

FYI. The internet isn't always a credible source. So, if you are really concerned, ask your pediatrician what they recommend. I would go with the testing strips, for peace of mind. But, I am a random internet stranger.

I've always heard if you're okay to drive, you're okay to pump/nurse. I usually wait 2 hours after a drink or 2 to pump
  • My pediatrician said 1 drink every 4 hours and you're good. That may be conservative but I like the idea of staying on the safe side.
