Cheating...

What's your biggest dietary "cheat" so far?  I caved and bought a mocha this morning because, frankly, dreary days like today call for coffee.  Spill it, mamas!  Are you eating sushi, cold cuts, and juicy steaks?

I'm eating what ever I can stomach. No seafood, no cold cuts.

Pasta mostly, burgers, chicken, and more chocolate than I care to admit ;)

  • I'm drinking more caffeine than I'd like.  I'm at less than half my daily limit of 200mg, but I'm trying (and failing) to cut it back further than that.  I'm hoping for more luck as the exhaustion lets up.

Oh god.  I'm going to Longhorn this weekend for Mother's Day and a rare or medium rare steak sounds so good.

Doooo it! Protein is good for you and the risk is pretty low. Wanna Fanta, know ya wanna.

I also subscribe to "give your body what it wants" theory, @soberrysweet. :)
  • I can't even stomach junk food right now even more so than usual. I'm eating a lot of peanut butter sandwhiches lol.
  • I get deli sandwiches from Subway all the time. I just make sure they toast it.

I probably won't this weekend, but I'll get bf to make me one soon.  He's a former chef and is more likely to get it exactly how I like it.  Plus less dealing with my mother chiming in on why I shouldn't.  lol.

Yeah, I ordered a well done steak the other day...  Never again.  Couldn't even use sauce to moisten it because I didn't want to exacerbate my heartburn.  Next time, I'm getting medium.

I eat turkey sandwiches at least 3x per week. Carbs tend to be my go to, because overall they don't make me want to puke.
I have been craving chick fil a, but every time I eat it, it never stays down long... still worth it
  • I never had much of a sweet tooth but OMG all I want is chocolate, candy, ice cream, Italian ice. It's crazy and I am REALLY bad at stopping myself from eating it, it's like I have no more self control!
  • I agree with the pp's. Right now it's all about eating what you can manage. I'm staying away from most deli meat because I don't like my sandwiches hot and I don't really trust grocery stores or places like Subway. Delis like Jersey Mike's that fresh cut their meat are probably safer than other sandwich shops that pre-cut and then store.

I've had a little caffeine, more white stuff than usual (bread, rice, pasta, etc.) and I'm eating way more fruits than vegetables right now because veg seems disgusting mostly. I've had salami and prosciutto, but in small amounts. You can only be so careful when eating in general is such a struggle.
  • I am with the PP's. I eat whatever I want when I want it. I have my lattes a few times a week and I have not given up my roast beef sandwiches. :)
  • To celebrate the end of my first trimester , I had a small can of Red Bull .. I know I shouldn't , but I was in heaven !!

I drank half of my husbands 8 oz can yesterday. I had been craving the taste of it since I quit when I found out. He looked at me strange when he picked it up and the can felt lighter but he didn't say anything lol.

I've had some sushi. And deli meat. I've been craving lobster& crab, I caved the other night and went to red lobster (best seafood option we have in west Texas) . My doctor says everything in moderation.

Question ladies. I know you aren't supposed to eat sandwich meat, but I was under the impression it was only the kind precut in bags, because it grows bacteria. I thought freshly cut deli meat on a fresh deli sandwich was ok? I haven't eaten any I don't believe but I was just wondering...

@tayzav I actually thought the opposite because the slab of meat sits in the "fridge". I could be wrong.
Either way, I haven't avoided deli meat. It was one of my biggest cravings with my first pregnancy and I definitely gave in to it many many times.

I've heard the other way around, actually, that the bacteria grows better at room temperature and meat sitting in a deli counter is more prone to bacteria growth.
  • There really isn't a food that I consider completely off the list of things to eat while you're pregnant.  I don't eat a lot of the things you're "not supposed to eat" during pregnancy when I'm NOT pregnant, so this isn't really a big deal to me.  Oh, and for everyone freaking out about making sure your deli meat is warm to prevent listeria, you'll also need to warm your lettuce as there's a risk for listeria with lettuce as well.

I eat it all in moderation. If you trust the place or brand you're fine.
Listeria can form on just about any food. It more common in fruit these days than lunch meat.

  • I don't see eating foods as cheating. It seems silly to me. I eat everything in moderation. Well, not processed junk, but I eat seafood, sushi, deli turkey, rare steak, etc.

I'm the same. But I'm assuming you meant you aren't eating a lot of processed food, and that what I keep shoving in my face...
    :\">
  • I can't "cheat" with coffee... I just don't trust myself not to fall off the wagon.  But I eat whatever I want in moderation, and with my ob-gyn's full blessing.  Of course, my new pregnant stomach doesn't seem to like ANY food, but when I find something (like sushi) that I can still eat... I let myself have it... maybe once every two weeks or so?  That feels reasonable to me.  I've had Togo's, a soda.... and I don't feel even remotely guilty!

    ;;)
  • I eat cooked sushi and I accidentally had a hotdog I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to until a friend said hey if ur pregnant no hotdogs...

Hot dogs are fine as long as they are cooked. Maybe don't get the ones off a mystery cart of at the ballpark unless you know they are freshly cooked, but hotdogs are not inherently dangerous. Cooked sushi is also fine.

Has anyone else gone on the Pregnant Chicken site? She has a great list of the don'ts people tell you during pregnancy and the info on what is fearmongering and what you should definitely avoid and gives you the evidence so you can decide.

Thank you all so much that really helps lol
  • Expecting Better by Emily Oster covers the food myths too! I've been craving lots of fish with this little one.. Had some ceviche not too long ago. Me-OW, it was delicious.

The craving I don't like is the Mexican Coca-Cola from a glass bottle. I'll let myself indulge in one or two a week.

Whoops, I had a caesar salad tonight.
  • Ive actually been really good with my diet, but I broke down after three months of no coffee and bought a medium iced latte the other day. And today I had like, 4oz of red wine to celebrate SO's promotion.

Don't plan on "cheating" much throughout pregnancy, though. ;p
  • All I want is chicken salad on wheat bread with pesto. And Greek food, olives and fruit. Not so bad!!! Glad this baby likes to eat paleob(for the most part) as much as her mama!!!
  • Diet coke is my weakness, but not too much. Other than that I've been craving salads... Which is completely weird for me. I'm kind of s steak and potatoes kind of girl normally.
  • Nothing other than alcohol is off limits for me as its in moderation (sushi, caffeine, deli meat, etc). I did the same with my first pregnancy and my daughter is happy & healthy.

I love salad.  Greek salad especially, but it wouldn't be the same without feta, so I've been trying to hold off...

I was totally planning on "cheating" with coffee (in moderation) because I couldn't imagine going without!
But I developed an aversion to it at 5 weeks and couldn't even stomach the smell of it!
The aversion isn't bad anymore and I like the smell of it again but I think I'll still wait til post-baby to pick up my habit again.
But I did have part of a Monster energy drink yesterday. It was free, I had a long drive home, and I havent had any caffeinated drinks at all in over 10 weeks! That's not something I ever drink normally, so my friends all looked at me like I'd lost my mind!

Bacteria is present on deli meat all the time. It's Listeria monocytogenes and it comes from the machinery in the factory where the meat is "processed" and sliced. This type of bacteria is terrible for pregnant mamas and fetuses, BUT infection is not as common as doctors let on. I recommend heating the meat to kill the bacteria. It does not take long to kill it.
Leaving it out of the fridge is TERRIBLE for the meat (and for any other foods/liquids that need to be refrigerated) because room temperature is the optimal growth temperature for this type of bacteria.
Moderation is key, as with everything we consume.
    Best of luck!

  • Every once in a while I'll cheat and have a sub - usually toasted. It's just the only damn thing that seems to be appetizing to me lately. And of course I'm a tea freak, so ever since I found out I was pregnant I literally have been measuring out my morning cup of tea to make sure it's the alloted amount! :)
