Shingles Vaccine

My mother in law got the shingles vaccine and the dr told her she shouldn't be around me if I haven't had chicken pox.   I have had chicken pox, however I am very concerned with being around her still.  I called my dr, talked to the nurse she said error on the side of caution.  I could still go to the cookout this weekend but keep my distance from her and be outside.  I am still trying to decide whether or not to go.  I don't want to take any unnecessary risk if I don't have to and she understands.  However I also don't want to be dramatic and would like to see them.  Does anyone know more about the shingles vaccine and/or had experience with this?  Thanks!

Re: Shingles Vaccine

  • I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as the chicken pox vaccine. But the chicken pox vaccine is a live virus. I have never had the chicken pox and was vaccinated as a child. I never had a booster shot for it. When I got pregnant with my DD1 I worked at a daycare so my dr had me tested for antibodies. I had none, so therefore I am not immune. I asked if I could be vaccinated and my dr said no since it's a live virus. I'd assume that's why you need to keep your distance. If it's a live virus, there is a possibility of contracting it from her.

  • It is a live virus, but I have had chicken pox. Curious if there is still a high risk when I have had the chicken pox.
  • I've had chicken pox 3 times and still contracted shingles in college. Not sure where I got it from, they said potentially the dormant virus. I have no medical training, but I would also be cautious.

Just make a joke of it with your MIL. Tell her you'll wave at her from across the picnic table and tell her you love her but have to keep your distance until the shedding period is over. I'm sure she'll understand. She won't want to cause you discomfort or risk her grand-baby.

Consider how many people who get a vaccine or something that you don't know about and come into contact with, including in public (cashier, germy shopping carts, etc.). At least with her you know and can take precaution.

  • If you do go, I'd definitely have her cover the vaccine site, especially if she gets a rash there (side effect)...
  • Haha the good thing is I will avoid any belly touches lol!! Funny I was thinking that too, how many people I don't know who have had the vaccine.  I talked to a friend who is a nurse, she said best not to risk it.  Stay away from her for at least a week to 3 weeks, so I have decided to stay home.  Thanks for the advice ladies.
  • The risk is to the baby. When I was in the ER while pregnant with DD #1 a child was brought in with a rash that ended up being chicken pox. When I told the Dr that she sat right next to me he freaked out and quarantined my room from any nurses caring for the little girl. I wouldn't risk it.
  • Thanks!  I don't want any regrets, since I know this information better to just play it safe.
